UPDATE: The wife and I ordered takeout from here for the first time and it didnt disappoint. We got the fried shepherds pie which are still phenomenal. However, they forgot the gravy dipping sauce, which is half the goodness of this dish. The mac n cheese is just ordinary. Skip it. The main part of the Thanksgiving dinner is a great dish (the stuffed turkey over mashed potatoes). However, the corn and greens were bland and seemed like they came from the frozen food aisle. For dessert we had the fried Oreos which were delicious. I highly recommend this for a sweet and savory mix, especially since they dont have our go-to lava cake dessert anymore. I had to drop a star from my previous review because of the blandness of some of the dishes, but this place still remains one of our favorites. Original Review: This is a great little gem of a restaurant in the ever-trendier Birmingham area. From the cool Alice in Wonderland themed decor to the food selections, this place is a great place to hang out and grab some food and drinks. I highly recommend the fried shepherds pie (served with gravy dipping sauce), the King Ryan filet mignon bites, and ANY of their desserts. Their wine selection has a good number of legitimate options, and their signature drinks are refreshing and fun. They have outdoor seating as well. My wife and I literally went back the next day for another meal after we tried this place the first time.

Great atmosphere and loved the theme! I was expecting a bit more from the brunch menu to follow their theme, like their dinner menu. I ordered the original eggs benedict and my husband ordered the crab cakes benedict. Upon placing my order with the waitress, I requested no english muffin and the waitress told me that she was not sure if the chief would do that because of presentation. A friend that was with us ordered something from the menu and was told that it would be an extra wait time because the sauce was not ready. So she was left to order something else. We arrived when they opened. The english muffin was left off of my order as requested. However, we still found the entire plate lacking and just barely warm. Sadly, it has deterred us from returning to try dinner. Most of our party agreed.

Went here yesterday for happy hour with some girls friends. My friend was the first one to get there and had never been before so when no one greeted her at the door she didnt know if it was seat yourself or something. So instead she wandered downstairs and eventually back outside until another one of us showed up. We eventually got seated, however, our waiter did not give us the happy hour menu. When we asked for it, he rudely replied that happy hour was only until 6pm... well it was 10 after 5. The rest of our time there he was curt and impolite. Two of us ordered a mad mule and it was basically non-alcoholic as it was all ice and sweetened lime juice. Although our service was underwhelming the food was very good. Bravo on the tacos!

I made a reservation for restaurant week. Super excited because the reviews and pictures of the food looked sooo good. But when I got there, I had a table in the middle of the aisle--I tried to change tables but the hostess said the bar was the only place that would been conducive for us (which would not have been bad at all)---we sat at the bar and NEVER GOT SERVED! I mean wow! I had to wonder what the issues were, was there a dress code, my hair looked funny, too female, too brown, or was the place packed (but it wasnt). I dunno the reasoning--I let the hostess know and left hungry! Not a place I (or my hungry stomach) would recommend.

Ive eating at the Mad Hatter Bistro in Birmingham several times, mostly for lunch. The wait staff has always been great and I have zero complaints about the food. The Turkey Dinner sandwich at lunch is my favorite and they sweet potato fries are really good. I stopped in once for dinner just before 5:00 but they were only serving a limited Happy Hour menu. I was a little disappointed I could order off a Lunch or Dinner menu. I ended up ordering a salad, which was good. Just keep an eye on hours and their menu options before stopping by.

ADORABLY UNIQUE! This place has excellent drinks and has something for everybody! You can be a Plain Jane when it comes to eating, or a Long-Lived Foodie. The food was tasty, and presented well. The waitstaff was friendly, and it seemed like they enjoyed working there. The atmosphere, as you can imagine, is very much Alice-Approved. I have yet to partake in the actual tea party option, but it is definitely something I plan to do soon! HIGHLY suggest making a reservation, if youre going during the weekend!

This place has that perfect balance between really owning their theme, but without feeling fake. The food was delicious (get the fried shepherds pie small plate, its fantastic), the drinks are perfectly mixed, and our server Dee was the best. My husbands only complaint was the beer list was very small and his first choice was out, but even that wasnt a big deal because we understand this is not a beer place and his second choice was delicious. I am absolutely going back and everyone else should go too.

We met friends here yesterday for dinner. The service was great and their burgers were great. I had the steak and it was just so so for flavor..though it was cooked perfect it had very little taste to it...may need more salt. I gave it a 3 star because I didnt feel it was all that good for the price and did being in the area. Also, I went to the womens bathroom to find myself without toilet paper and hand soap. It was completely out so I had to use my own hand sanitizer and use paper towel...ouch!!

Let me be honest with you, I tried this place when it first opened, the decor was amazing, the owner was very kind and checked up on us, and the waiters were great. However, when it came to the food I did not see the buzz at all. About ten months later, I came back and the food was great, they had much more of a variety and such interesting and unique foods. 100% would say it is the best restaurant in downtown Birmingham. Everyone must try this place!

Made a reservation. Was told we would need to sit outside or make sure we were done before the next reservation arrived. We called hostess out on her comment, which she quickly backed down from. Was willing to get over it, however over heard the same ultimatum given to the party seated next to us. Must not be interested in return business. Which is a shame because the waiter provided good service & the food was good as well.

Bar was full but tables were empty! Told there would be over a 2 hour wait to be seated as a party was due in. The hostess was rude and seemed to be annoyed that we even steped inside. We ate down the street at Polpetta. On our walk back to the car 40 minutes later the tables inside Mad Hatter were still empty! That would have been plenty of time to seat, feed and get a pit stop guest out of s sub par novelty joint!
