Northside Grill has a lot of brunch competition in Ann Arbor. Ive eaten here maybe five times in the last five years (one time being last weekend). In short: Northside Grill doesnt wow me, it doesnt disappoint me, its just a place to get brunch. Regarding not being wowed, I generally feel like the menu isnt that creative, the food doesnt have all that much taste, and the ambiance is definitely diner-y. It is, in short, a forgettable meal. Regarding not being disappointed, Ive always had a filling meal here, I really like their music selection, and their menu is kind to vegetarians. Prices are okay. Finally, I appreciate that, if theres a wait and you find yourself sitting on the bench outside, they have a dispenser for free mini cups of coffee. With that said, and while I dont drink coffee, myself, Ive heard that the coffee is pretty bad, unfortunately. So I find myself feeling that Northside Grill is A-OK. They dont have big draws the way Angelos has homemade bread or Savas has a buffet. But its reliable and fine diner food. I just learned that they have a small side-porch, so I would be curious to sit outside and eat. But if you gave me other local brunch locations as choices instead of the porch here, Id probably choose the other places. They have their own parking lot and parking is free.

We visited the Northside Grill for a late lunch following a routine visit to the Kellog Eye Center nearby. It was quite the worst dining experience I have ever experienced in an Ann Arbor eatery of any kind. It began and continued with a sullen, unsmiling, uncommunicative and general unpleasant server. The coffees duly arrived -- the filter coffee just about acceptable (despite the strange boiled skimmed milk) and an undrinkable latte for my partner. The food followed -- an acceptabe BLT for my partner and an acceptable eggs-over-easy, hash browns and bacon for me, with 2 pancakes to finish. No toast or bread. The check, when it arrived from the still insolent server, was the last straw. Every item on my standard breakfast was charged as a side (even the eggs were charged individually) and pancakes and maple syrup were charged separately, All leading to an staggering bill of $26, about $16 of which was for my nearly-standard breakfast. I have eaten in establishments across the whole of Ann Arbor for 15 years, and have never experienced such an appalling experience. The proprietor made some minor adjustments after I had responded appropriately to his, "Was everything alright, sir?" My partner and I will not be going to the Northside Grill again. Ever. Vastly overrated.

Food was good however they overcharged me 3.95 on my debit card. I ended up paying $30 including tip for a simple breakfast. I called and explained this they overcharged me 3.95. They told me they didnt overcharge me and it is my banks fault ? This was after I leave a generous tip in cash. They want me to come down there and show them my bank statement for $4. This is absolutely ridiculous. I never seen a business handle money so poorly and blatantly overcharge customers. Then the manager calls and says it is my banks fault ? Then they want me to waste time coming down there for $4 ? It looks like a gratuity was automatically added. I payed $3 in cash and apparently the cashiers cannot figure out how to enter this with a card. They should simply refund the 3.95 directly to my card without making me waste time going down there. Unbelievable and then the manager tells me this is my fault when they overcharge me? Not only that I called back after the manager left and they hung up on me twice since they were busy, I guess they do not care about customer service or retaining new customers. I have screenshots to prove the overcharge compared to the receipt. It wont allow me to post but I can email proof.

Though I live in the neighborhood I have only been there a few time because they ALWAYS seem to botch something up. No cheese in the omelet, putting meat in a vegetarian dish, different toast than requested....little things like that. I have never dined there and had the correct meal served to either myself or my dinner companions and it is not like anyone is making special request. When one is paying an average of $10 or more for breakfast or a sandwich it should be made correctly the first time. Its average diner fare at best. Further more no one really goes out of their way to make it right for you, the staff are often zombie like. So today we figured we would try one last time but the straw that broke the back, no carryout on the weekends, who has time to wait almost an hour to eat at Northside on Sunday?? And free coffee while you wait doesnt take the sting off the long wait when you dont drink the stuff. I used to think this diner was busy because of maybe great food or amazing service, but really it is just the only spot to eat breakfast this side of town.

Ive been coming to Northside at least twice a week for the past 7 years to write. I come for the Roos Roast coffee, the fresh squeezed OJ, the real maple syrup as well as the staff who are all like family to me. I was there on Mothers Day 17 with my 10 and 11 year old sons when a very unruly soccer party of 16 arrived without warning or a reservation, shocking the staff and other patrons with their incredible rudeness, toxic presence and foul language. My sons and I witnessed and *experienced* the entire thing firsthand as the boys in their party kept bumping into our table. The manager on duty attempted to accommodate the mannerless kids, the cursing coach and the entitled parents to no avail and so she politely asked them to leave when it was clear that nobody would be well served by their continued presence. I high-fived her after they left because the entire atmosphere of the place was immediately cleared and returned to a beautiful calm. I give this place 5 stars for consistently good food and the courage to do hard things when necessary.

The Northside Grill is a humble little restaurant, but its one of the more unique and tasty breakfast joints in Ann Arbor. The menu is a mix of breakfast staples and original creations, with a surprisingly upscale tilt. On the outside it looks like a standard greasy spoon, but this is not the case at all. My favorite is the Morning Eggdition, a breakfast sandwich consisting of scrambled eggs, diced tomato, diced ham, melted swiss, and their excellent black pepper mayo on grilled white break, served with hash browns (theyll happily give you fries instead for the same price, which is nice for lunch). They have excellent soups too. Supposedly the place is always packed on the weekends, but Ive never been. I prefer to hit it for lunch during the week, when the crowds are sparse and the service and food lightning fast. Highly recommended!

Great food and an adorable little diner, but I wont be going back again. Its a shame, because I really do enjoy the food and the quaint feeling of the diner setting, but the staff is, as mentioned below, incredibly rude. There is often a wait, and it seems to "annoy" the staff. In this economy, they should be thrilled to have such a popular diner that people enjoy eating at, and a place that create lines. However, dont treat the people waiting to eat there like crap. We are paying customers, and dont deserve to be treated rudely, to have eyes rolled at us, or to be told to wait outside...and its not even said politely. Although Ive been a loyal customer, and taken family/friends from out of town there...I will never be back again!
