I was very happy to get a BBQ joint in Winthrop and Blackstrap BBQ does not disappoint. Its a VERY small dining room, maybe three tables and some window seating. All the walls are blackboard with the menu written on them. My first time I ordered food to go so I did not sit in the dining area. We ordered two three meat dinners with the Shredded BBQ Chicken, Carolina Style Pork and the Texas Brisket. One with sweet sauce and one with hot. All the meats were amazing! The hot sauce had a mild zing to it yet tasty, my favorite. All the sides were a little small but very good. I was very happy to find Fried Pickles on the menu. They are yummy with a little kick to them. I loved them. Each dinner came with a huge hunk of Corn Bread. I liked it, it reminded me of an Irish soda bread, a flavor my wife was not to thrilled with. Ill be going back again soon! If they get a liquor license I dont think Ill ever leave. :) Great to see "Downtown" Winthrop getting some cool little restaurants!

Blackstrap is a local favorite. The food here is truly authentic BBQ cooked to perfection. Theres a dining area and a separate bar area (fully equipped with a great custom drink lineup). The staff there is fantastic. My only complaint (though not enough to make me lower my rating) is that if you try to call to place an order to go getting them to answer the phone is no easy feat... that being said, the reason for this is that they are busy being attentive to the folks in the restaurant. If you walk in and order it takes just moments to get your order in most all circumstances as it all had to be cooked slow and low in advance anyway! A couple of "must try" items in my opinion are the fried pickles, the corn & bacon salad, and the chili mac & cheese.

Ive never had BBQ in the south, which may make this review entirely pointless in the eyes of some. However Ive eaten at many of New Englands options, and Ive probably eaten the entire menu of more than a few. First: The food rocks. Ive never been disappointed, if not downright giddy by the food. For sides, be sure to try the collard greens (so sweet!) and chili mac n cheese. Second: The sauces. The sweet is sweet, and the hot is damn. Nice burn without being intolerable. Just go easy there rook. Third: The people. The guys who work there are friendly, easy-going, happy people. That makes a big improvement, even when the food is as good as it is. And they always have some good music playing.

I cannot say enough good things about this place... My favorite restaurant since moving to Boston. I love going there because it reminds me of the kind of BBQ joint you would find in my hometown of Portland Oregon. Young, cool, friendly staff, and the owners are wonderful guys, and the music... it may not be for everyone, but its like the best of college radio, and I am a huge fan. If you like Sleigh Bells with your BBQ this is the hip place for you. To be honest there have been a few times some side items have not been up to standard but the BBQ is to die for

My wife and I love this place! We just moved to this area after living in Somerville and being spoiled by Redbones BBQ. This place is a lot smaller but reminds me of the excellent food we would get at Redbones. You really cant go wrong with anything you order here. The staff are super friendly which makes this spot a neighborhood gem. Rumor has it that they are expanding and will be incorporating a bar! I cant wait!

This place is no frills solid food. I suggest one of the combos if youre indecisive. I normally get the Waikiki combo which includes Blackstrap BBQ beef, chicken, 2 scoops of white rice, and macaroni salad. If youre a little more hungry get the super combo which is essentially the previous item with 2 eggs and gravy added. The food is solid and Ill always stop here when Im in the area for lunch.

Wow! This place was beyond amazing! Honeymooning from Kansas City, so we know our BBQ! Owner went above & beyond for us. Amazing sauces. Amazing meats. Amazing sides. And my wife is a vegetarian, and even she enjoyed the non-meat items they had here. This a must stop, and we will definitely be back if we are ever in the area again!

Great service - friendly and fast, everything from the fried hot dog as an appetizer to the Texas bisket was amazing. Highly recommend, also has a small bar or the other aide of the restaurant. Choice of one meat out of 5-6 types and two sides for cheap - HARD TO BEAT & HARD TO FIND IN TH AREA unless you want Texas Roadhouse.

The food is great. The service.... well that day we get some problems to order. It was just 1 guy in the bar and he was the waiter. Long time wait the food and the drinks. Not enough forks and knives. I really enjoy the meal the restaurant is very good looking ;) give a chance. I loved the corn- bacon salad and the ribs !!!

Best chilli I ever had. I make the best chilli so it was quite amazing tasting something that is even better than my own. The fried chicken was great too. Corn bread. And the chicken wings. Al off it amazing. And cheap. I would come here again and refer anyone friends and family to this great local Winthrop bbq joint

Meat was dry, BBQ sauce lacked flavor, coleslaw treated like it was bathed in vinegar, and I was crammed in a corner which I could barely get out of. The cornbread was good, but they could have given us some butter for it. I had high hopes based on the reviews, but came away very disappointed.

Great food. Real authentic BBQ in large portions. The drinks really make this place. They have all the standard beers and whiskeys, but the cocktail list is divinely inspired. Seriously! The bartenders infuse their own spirits with inventive combinations like smoked gin or vanilla tequila.

Only been to this place once, but we still talk about going back asap. Our server was friendly and helpful(go SU!), and the barbecue was on point. Huge portions and a great selection of beers. Definitely try the burnt ends of brisket! We will be going back soon!

Nice location with a big menu. I ordered a big plate with rips and pulled pork. My wife had the same plate with brisket and rips. Side were good. Brisket and rips were a little bit dry. Also the meat was low on temperature. So three stars for that location

First and last visit to this saloon. My senses were awakened to the smell of smoked wood, great country music and interesting paintings to view. Unfortunately the service was beyond poor and the food was OK. I hope they get their act together.

The wings were incredible and the fries were also amazing. Smoked chicken was good, but the breast meat my friend had was waaaay dry. The brisket ends were delicious, but the sliced brisket was just dry. Good selection of sauces though.

Good BBQ is hard to find in Massachusetts, but there are a few and Blackstrap is probably the best of them. The portions seem to have gotten much smaller over the years, but the food is excellent and the price is still reasonable.
