My first and last visit was on July 3, 2014. The hostess seemed professional. The waitress seemed amateurish and also overworked, easily distracted, or both. I ordered C55 - Shrimp with Mixed Vegetables, a side of rice, and a soda. The food came surprisingly quickly in about 5 minutes. The vegetables consisted of broccoli spears and fancy sliced carrots. Ive learned to expect American vegetables in Chinese restaurants unless the menu specifically says Chinese vegetables, but I was a little surprised that "mixed vegetables" meant only two kinds. The shrimp and rice were cooked, and the carrot slices were mostly cooked, so I ate them. The broccoli made up much of the meal and was raw, so I didnt eat them. The soy sauce on everything was merely warm, and I cant imagine it was ever in a wok. Now you know why it took only 5 minutes to serve. After a brief 10 minutes inside, I did not leave a tip, and I paid on the way out. The hostess asked about my dinner, and I shook my head and told her that the vegetables werent cooked and I didnt eat them. I told her this quietly because other customers were nearby. She looked around and seemed to ponder the situation, I thought maybe to take something off the bill (although I did not ask or request it), but she charged me the full bill, $17 and some change. Im over 50, and Ive enjoyed Chinese food all my life in a variety of restaurants and homes. I know the four large characters mounted on wall of the Shun Ju main dining room are the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. But Im not a snob, and have thoroughly enjoyed many meals in many small, humble restaurants in Bostons Chinatown, including the old second floor "food court" at Beach and Harrison. I cannot recommend the Shun Ju to anyone.

Here are my thoughts: I eat here a lot since I work nearby. The problem with this place is consistency. I always order the Generals Chicken. Sometimes it is amazing and sometimes it is "meh". Usually it is because of weird fishy aftertastes that ruin the chicken. I will say that they have the second best crab rangoons in the area (China Cuisine in North Reading takes the cake there) My favorite egg drop soup. The onion chives really make it great. Another issue (not that big of a deal) is the service. I eat here at times where there is usually no one else eating which doesnt help. Once I get seated and my order taken and delivered, the waitstaff are usually busy doing their own thing and sit in the very back corner (they might be eating themselves since I always go at dead hours). They cant see if I need water or not so I normally just get up and grab the water pitcher myself. Havent gotten in trouble yet. lol On to the bar... I have only sat at the bar a couple of times for drinks but I do remember distinctly thinking that the bartender girl was "forcing us out" even though there was still 20-30 mins to close. A friend and I got there about 30 min till close (so 930 or 1030, cant remember) ordered a couple of drinks and were already getting hounded about closing our tab. There were other people at the bar too. Its whatever. If you want a nice bar, go to Shadis restaurant.

My friends and I stopped here for takeout on the way home at around 9PM tonight. My order came to $24 and some change. I handed the gentleman (who appeared to be the owner/manager) $30, but he only gave me about $3 back (you do the math) and did not give me a receipt. I asked the waitress for a receipt, but she refused to give me one. I figured there would be a receipt attached to our brown paper bag when the food came out, so I did not bother asking again. The same gentleman who took our order came back out with our food, but right before he handed us our food, he took the receipts and tossed it. Im not complaining about a few bucks, but the principle behind it. How many people has he short changed for a profit? It adds up! Lesson: make sure you get a receipt and count your change. Customer service is also lacking to say the least.

Just finished a lunch of Sake Maki, Maguro Maki and Kanikama Maki and was very disappointed. Not what I would expect from an "authentic" Japanese restaurant. Im no sushi snob, but I definitely can tell the difference between well and poorly prepared maki. I would describe the sushi as "mediocre at best", but it was really more like what I would expect from a person whos never had sushi before making it from cheap ingredients. The salmon was sub-par and the tuna was a cheap mid-cut. The wasabi was either a month old or very cheap as well. I would rather have the pre-packaged grocery store sushi than from Shunju again.

Ive only ordered take out from this place and its pretty good. The new owners are very friendly and always strike up a conversation while Im waiting for my food. They even offer water while Im waiting, which is small, but a nice gesture. I usually get the chicken wings, which are good and adequately seasoned. The house pan fried noodles are really good too. One complaint I have about this place is the portion sizes, which have diminished since the new management has taken over.

this is the WORST Chinese food Ive EVER had. The Pork in the LoMein is grey and noodles are soggy and disgusting, the chicken wings were half raw and the duck sauce is straight apple sauce. Even the beef teriyaki was horrible, how do you mess up beef on a stick with teriyaki sauce?! Also, the crab rangoons were horrendous, they werent crispy at all, but if runny cream cheese floats your boat- you may just love them! save yourself the time and go to China Blossom.

I love the food value. Get a lot for a few bucks. Average lunch bill with tip is 9-11 bucks.
