One of my favorite places! When I lived in California I used to go to Gyu-Kaku all the time so I was psyched when I found out there was one a few blocks from Beth Israel/Longwood Medical Center. I went on a weekday afternoon with my parents who are normally into very typical American food so it was a hard sell. The atmosphere at the front of the restaurant was cozy/as authentic as an American who has never been to Japan can tell. There was no wait but I was told there typically is at night since they have appetizer specials and a vast drink menu as well as being close to BU, Harvard, and Northeastern. There was an odd section in the back near the bathrooms with only a few tables that smelled a little funky but we didnt sit there. We were seated right away and the waitress greeted us and asked if weve been there before. I mentioned I had but my parents were new to the restaurant and the whole Japanese BBQ thing. She spent lots of time going over all the different options and how to cook the food on the firepit. We ended up sharing a bunch of dishes, mainly steak for meats as well as Zucchini, Summer Squash, Corn, and Shiitake mushrooms. Id say the Miso Steak, Filet Mignon, Zucchini and Squash definitely were our favorites. For dessert I was slightly disappointed they didnt have the flambe bananas with chocolate sauce like the LA restaurants did but I had the Chocolate Lava cake which was delicious and had a hard time picking that over the green tea ice cream and the banana cheesecake fritters. Overall, Id say one of the best things besides that the meal tasted great was that I didnt feel overly full or sluggish afterward either. It felt like I got some good quality protein, low carb vegetables, and it left room for the dessert. I highly recommend, at least during the late afternoon/early evening.

My roommate and I used to come here all the time and it was excellent!! The happy hour prices cant be beat and the food was good. For some reason lately though, everything is just going to the dogs. We went last week and it took an exceptionally long time to get most of our food for 2 oclock on a Sunday. Then I had to track a random waitress down to inquire as to whether or not we would be getting the rice we ordered. The meat is inconsistent size wise and sometimes has chunks of cartilage or bone in it. When nothing comes out within a few minutes of each other...youre left eating meat with no rice and no vegetables. Some of the staff are a little too interested in how youre doing. One of the same waiters must have come over a minimum of three times to ask how "delicious everything was". Wayyy too excited and in my face for a dining experience especially when you arent even our waiter! Will probably go back for the happy hour deal, but not super pumped to eat there any more.

This place is a one-of-its-kind in America. No where in Boston can you get a Japanese style BBQ. Might I say it is better than Korean BBQ? Bare with me. The portions for Korean BBQ are large and plentiful. How is that a minus? You do not get to try many of the various other dishes (unless youre rich)! This is great bang for buck. And the drinks are cheap! My only concern for Gyukaku is the marinate tends to be a bit excessive, but I guess thats to serve the local palette who do not eat white rice with their meals on a daily basis (no offense intended). I would recommend starting off with thinly sliced meats such as the spicy pork and soy miso beef. Pair that up with the garlic fried rice and you will be hooked. Dont forget to wash it down with an atomic bottle of hot saki! Remember to bring a friend to enjoy the experience!

Gyu-Kaku is one of great BBQ restaurant, but This place is very ridiculous. They are selling Korean cuisine more than Japanese one. For example, They are selling Kalbi, Samgyeopsal (Korean style pork-belly), Gochujang Bulgogi (Spicy Pork), Bibimbap, Chigae (Korean Stew), Kimchi and Oisabagi (Spicy Cucumber), and using Korean style grill. On the other hands, Only Sake( Japanese style alcohol), Takoyaki, Edamame (Japanese style beans), and Miso soup are Japanese cuisine. Even they selling Korean cuisine more than Japanese cuisine, but it named as Japanese BBQ. Even Kobe-gyu, imported from Australia. Every food and service is fine.

Been here a few times because of the proximity to BU, and the food is pretty good as well as priced well since they always basically have happy hour (only time there isnt is around dinner time.) The reason I give this three stars though because of the really spotty service. Sometimes the waiters are nice and other times they have basically ignored my table. Ive been here during non busy period and items just take forever to come out which doesnt make sense to me considering you cook everything yourself..... If it werent for the bad service I would go back often.

I had lunch here with a colleague and was totally delighted in the experience. We ordered the Meat Lovers Special, which came with two kinds of beef, a small salad and a Miso soup. We augmented this with a Noodle dish (I forget the name) and a second miso soup. All this food was more than enough and came in under $25 for two. Exquisite presentation, sauces and quality meat. I was a long time fan of Ginza that was in the same location, but Gyu-Kaku is now one of my favorite places in the Kenmore area. Definitely coming back.

I went there for the $35 all you can eat deal. They also had a $45 AYCE with more options on meat but I was satisfied with the $35 option. Everything was delicious, and the pork belly is especially tasty. There was a 90 minute time limit for the AYCE but that wasnt a problem since I was very full after an hour. Separate utensils that touch raw meat from utensils that touch cooked meat. It takes a little getting used to once you get the hang of it, an excellent meal awaits!

Food quality (flavor, decoration, freshness): 5/5 Food quantity (amount w.r.t price): 5/5 (happy hour deals!) Restaurant quality (service, atmosphere, overall price): 4.5/5 Overall: 5/5 "Already want to go back! I strongly recommend Gyu-Kaku to everyone! Its worth coming all the way from Cambridge just for their food, service, and HAPPY HOUR! It is a good place for couples, families, or reunions!"

Really cool place and a lot of fun with a large group of people. Food was great and while I was a bit nervous at first to screw things up, they make it super easy for cooking-noobs. Also surprisingly affordable for Boston if you go during happy hour which seems to occur most of the day. Highly recommended if youre looking for something interesting and are not in a huge rush for food.

在波士顿地区比较好吃的日式餐厅,主要以无烟烧烤和各种石锅饭等,味道很好、价格实惠,适合多人用餐。晚餐需要预订,否则就得等了

Lovely restaurant with a very private feel which at first seems strange but in the end, is one of the reasons I love going back. The food is also very good but I would suggest going for lunch. The food is cheap and you can try a bunch of different things with out having to worry about the check.

Closest to GOOD Korean BBQ you can get in Boston. Place is super crowded, even on a Sunday at 9pm. We got the $35 all you can eat and the meats were top quality to cook table-side. The best are the toro and hanger steak. Grilling some kimchi is also pretty delicious.
