Maybe its the cost of living adjustment (since I was visiting from the south), but for the prices I paid for dinner, I expected much better. It wasnt even about the food (entirely). My son enjoyed his Salmon Oscar, and my Filet was decent... For me, there were two points of failure... 1) The service (or lack thereof). My son sat twice with an empty glass. The first time, I had to ask someone else to send our server over to get it refilled. The second time, he just turned his attention to his water since we were done and ready to go. I had to ask the server to bring bread (even though the menu stated it came with the dinner). The server never offered us any dessert options at the end of the meal, but she was quick to bring a dessert plate to the people seated next to us. Was it because we were in jeans and Polos while the other folks were in shirts and ties? Did she serve them before and just happened to know them? I dont know - but what I do know is neglecting your clients is the best way to not retain them and to get a bad review. 2) The second point of failure for me was the plating of the food. It was very plain. Nothing was garnished. My filet looked out of place as the sole occupant of the plate while my potato sat on another. Even the soup and salad I and my son ordered were plated very plainly. Very disappointing for the prices. For the prices we paid, we could have gotten much better service, equally (or better) tasting food plated better, and 2 extra people in our dinner party at a chain restaurant like Longhorn Steakhouse. I was on business travel from Charleston, SC and during the week, I had a chance to meet up with my son and have dinner with him (he lives in MD). This was a chance to have a great and special time with my son - but the overall experience was disappointing. When I am back in the area in December and he and I go out to eat in Annapolis again, we wont be stepping into Middleton Tavern.

There are a multitude of reasons this place was just plain bad. However the main issues included rude service and sub-par food on top of expensive pricing. My husband ordered the crab sandwich; it was a nice serving size, but this was quickly overpowered by the sheer amount of mayo in the crab patty. It was mushy instead of nicely crisp as a crab cake should be. Also the side of fries that came with it were old and cold. Seriously, they were hard and slightly stale as if they had been sitting for a while. Cost $17 I ordered the Maryland crab soup, which turned out to be the equivalent of vegetable beef soup with a few pieces of crab meat tossed in. It was salty and unsatisfying. Cost $9 Ah, now the service. The guy at the door was nice enough to tell us where to go since we wanted to eat inside, but after that it all went downhill. There was a gathering of sorts near the hostess stand so when we came in no one was paying attention. It basically took me saying a table for two please to get a seat. Then our waiter came. He gave us two menus and a look that basically told me he wasnt happy with the arrangement and he walked away. At this point my husband was ready to just leave, but hey I was starving and willing to give it a shot. When we finally order(the waiter did not check in at all even to ask drinks) he was short to the point of being rude. Skip to the end of the meal, he gave us the check and walked away. I had to flag him down to get it taken up and when he brought back the receipt he threw it on the table. Im sitting here thinking what the f**k, but whatever we paid and left. The only good thing that came out of it was that I was still hungry afterwards we went for ice cream which was delicious. Moral of the story is, go somewhere else if you want good food and service.

Some friends and I were having a night out in Annapolis and stopped in to listen to Larry play upstairs. He was great!!! We met some cool people, enjoyed good music and had fun. Then....we headed downstairs to end the night (1:30am). We sat at the packed bar. At approximately 1:40, I asked for another beer and the bartender said, Sorry buddy were done for the night. Ok, no worries. 5 minutes later, another guy (a regular) came up, asked for a beer and was given a beer. WHAT? The bartended said, Oh, I accidently threw his beer away and Im just replacing it. Yeah, ok! So...my friends and I asked why he got a beer after last call? The bartender just chuckled at us, while clearing one of our friends NOT empty beer off the bar (1:45). Our friend whose beer was dumped out happens to be a gay man, who was sitting next to his partner. Right after the beer was taken from the bar, a female employee told the bartender to pour him a shot of Blue Moon. The bartender poured 2 ounces of beer into a plastic dixie cup and handed it to our friend, who declined it. Heres where it gets ugly! 10 seconds prior, that female employee, (who was drinking a beer as well) was heard saying, God! I hate fa*gots! Yeah, we heard her say it and everyone in there realized we heard it and with that being said...that is our last visit to Middletons. We even explained the situation to the manager on duty who didnt apologize and was also drinking a beer as he listened to us tell him what just happened. Unbelievable!!!

Terrible! As most people who take the time to write a review, I will say that the experience either had to be phenomenal or deplorable for me to take the time to write a review. Unfortunately, my experience was the latter. For starters, the service was awful! Our waiter appeared to be operating in a drug induced stupor, looking unkempt and without a lick of enthusiasm. Slow is an understatement! The food was terrible. We started with the crab dip; please save yourself the dissatisfaction as this does not represent the Maryland crab in any sort of fashion that we have come to be known for. The portion was tiny with a thin layer of sizzling oil and a few tidbits of what I assume was supposed to be crab. I ordered the cheese steak sub. For the love of God do not make the same mistake! It was a thin gray shaved meat with a rainbow sheen much like the type you see on a puddle when your car has leaked its oil. The "cheese" sauce was anything but cheese. It was a horrible mixture of something tasting like relish, vinegar and bile. After two bites (Im all about second chances) I pushed my plate away. My companion had a Cesar salad or a plate of lettuce drenched in pickle juice. Unfortunately, there is little I can say that was redeeming about our experience with the exception of the locale and scenery....oh and the weather was exceptional! Thus, this service and food is absolutely not fitting or worthy of such a historical setting or to represent Marylands capital or seat of tourism.
