Apparently the 5 star reviewers are drinking several Margaritas before trying to food. After hearing some of my younger friends rave about The Mexican Cafe I decided to give it a try. I was told the food was excellent, it wasnt. I was told the Margaritas were the best around, they werent. The only thing my young friends got right was that the service was slow.. When we arrived the place was fairly empty for a happy hour. It is located in the spot where Northwinds used to be in West Annapolis. It took about 10 minutes to be seated in a place that had more wait staff than customers. When we were finally seated our waiter "Tom" was more interested in hitting on a girl (who appeared more than 1/2 his age) at the bar than he was serving us. We decided to use that time to plan the rest of our trip and I listened in on a conference call. When our waiter finally did greet us he was rude at best and annoying at worst. Hearing my conference call apparently made him think I wanted advice from a 40 something waiter about how to run my business but thats beside the point. Simply put the food was terrible. It was luke warm and bland. The service was even worse. The drinks were watered down and the building was too warm and smelled like a locker room with urine on the floor. I would avoid this place and head to Los Portales in Hanover or La Fiesta in Edgewater. Both have better food, drinks and compentent service. The Mexican Cafe has none of the above. Thanks for your time.

This place is as the stars suggest. Ok. I could have given it a 3.5 or 4 stars, but I had to overlook a few things and one of them, I could not. 1. The waiter was new, literally first time ever it seemed but this is something I overlooked. He was super nice and gave us what we ordered, eventually for a few things but we got it all lol. 2. Chips and salsa was meh. Chips seemed stale and as others have mentioned, the salsa was missing something. Salt helped. 3. Food overall was good. Guacamole was good, but a little false advertisement. I got the taco dinner which includes 3 tacos with cilantro onions tomatoes and lime juice - traditional taco toppings. Its my fault for not seeing flour or corn tortilla but my tacos came with lettuce and cheese. Got steak tacos. Steak was good though and overall even though I didnt get what I was expecting I thought it was all good. 4. The bottom line as to why it got a 3 star over 4 stars, however, was they ran out of rice. A Mexican restaurant with no rice? My wife got the Vegan burrito which consists of rice and beans and a few vegetables. Without the rice, it was straight beans really. I had a double order of black beans for my meal as well. Rice is essential especially in burritos lol. Oh, another good mention were that the drinks were good. Overall I will come back. If the rice was here Id give this place a 4 stars and overlook every other minor flaw.

Plain and simple....horrible and I dont recommend it. Where to start the complaints... 1. Mexican cafe through the yelp app stated free dip with dinner. We arrived around 6pm and we were denied a free dip with the coupon. Owner said she never agreed to it via the app. 2. Wait staff is young, high school aged with no clue. Very smug to the customers. Not a Mexican/Spanish person in the place that worked there. 3. Charged for plain chips (without dip). Never been to a Mexican place that didnt give free chips. Didnt even know til they handed the bill. 4. Beans were not refried. Whole beans with a little liquid. Didnt taste right. Probably out of can. 5. Place was just dingey all over. 6. Food took forever, bill took forever, food was mediocre at best. 7. No sour cream with entrees. We had the chicken fajitas and the enchilada supreme. In summary. Stay away from this dirty, poor service, blah food, not worth time or money place.

THIS PLACE SUCKS! I stopped by after work to unwind & get a margarita and appetizer. The place is quiet...good and there arent many people...great. I can sit out on the patio in peace to enjoy my drink. Well, two other parties come in and they were waited on before me. No hello. No Ill be right with you. Nothing. I give a big fat ZERO for customer service. I went there two times before and their organization skills are seriously lacking...but I believe in giving second chances. In this case, I gave three opportunities, which are now strikes ...and YOU"RE OUT! This place is a dive through and through. Sometimes, there is a lucky combination of a place being a dive but having excellent food. Sorry folks...this place is both a dive and has low quality food. As the rating states...Eek! Methinks not. Save your time and money and find a better mexican restaurant elsewhere. Caio!

The food isnt that great. I guess if youre a 20-something collar-popping-jersey-shore-watching guy or a 20-something-dark-framed-glass-wearing girl, you would think it was good because you havent had real Mexican food, except for that time you and youre friends got drunk on Spring Break in Cancun and threw up in the guacamole, not like youd remember either. But for those who know authentic Mexican, youll be disappointed. Chips are stale-ish, salsa is OK, guacamole is decent. I got the burrito, forgot the name but its the "kitchen sink".. it was decent, filled with a fair amount of stuffing. It smells funny inside though, like a dirty bathroom... maybe its the building. If you are from the mid-west, Canada or just a local with no Mexican food experience, youll say "OMG THIS IS SO GOOD". However, if you are experienced in authentic, youll click this review as useful.

This is one of the worst Mexican Restaurants Ive been to. The food is nothing near Authentic, the hot sauce taste terrible, and the alcohol is very expensive. Our waitress was very rude and provided terrible service so my party tipped 10%. She then proceeded to approach us in the parking lot asking for more money which made a very awkward scene as I had to explain why I didnt tip 20% as she was demanding. I WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN. Edit- We had asked her to split the checks and as soon as she left a buddy told us he found a groupon. So he purchased it and when she returned we asked if we could use it. The waitress was obviously upset and gave us a rude tone and said "so you all are going to make me go back to the register and add the checks?" My response "Well yes, that is what you are paid to do." Hence the 10% tip.

Well...it was our second time there. Went about a month ago...no WiFi so I could not use Groupon I had on my phone. Went back today. I had the Groupon face up on the table..both the host and waitress saw it...no way they could say they didnt. We ordered our drinks and food and when I asked for a rally to see if we used the value of our Groupon, sheTHEN says...."Oh, you cant use that today, its a holiday". Well, the Groupon said Federal Holiday and Fathers Day is a NATIONAL holiday NOT federal. I was sooo angry. We will go back to use it because I wont waste the money. BUT...I will ask upfront if we can use the Groupon. NOT a way to keep people coming back!!
