I first started working at the finest Chinese Restaurant in 1982. Oriental Inn was the name and was a fine establishment with fine food and great people running the business. I remember first hearing about the new Chinese Restaurant on Southland Drive, in the early 1980’s, which many claimed to be better than my place of employment in Patchen Village. I have to say I was not happy when Oriental Inn went out of business a few years later and I do miss the fine people I worked with, but the bottom line is Hunans is the best Chinese Restaurant in Lexington or Louisville. The food is always freshly prepared. If you have only been dining at the many Chinese Buffet lines lately chances are you have forgotten what Great Chinese food is supposed to taste like. One thing is for sure though; after you eat at Hunans you will not enjoy the large Buffet many other Asian establishments offer around the States. Hunans Sunday only Buffet may seem small compared to their competition, however after you compare the two I am sure you will eat at Hunan every chance you get. Kraig Koontz

Hunan, Hunan, Hunan. What should be done with you. . . Hunan has been around for decades in a town that rarely sees restaurants last that long. Hunan has long been regarded as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Lexington. As of late they seem to have some issues though on the weekends. A couple times the chef(s) would show up late or not at all. Theyve also recently done away with their Sunday buffet which was a Lexington tradition of sorts. The building is definitely showing its age but the interior dining area is still nice and gives off a cozy dining experience that you just dont find in a Chinese restaurant these days. Despite the inadequacies, their food (when someone shows up to make it) is still really quite good and you rarely get a "meh" meal when there. Hunan to me seems to be on the tipping point of greatness again or being run into the ground. Only time will tell which way it leans.

My husband & I used to eat Americian-ized Chinese food here, a lot, but over the years (with changes in management, I think) the quality fluctuated, and we went elsewhere. Last year, a friend we made from Wuhan, brought us back, and introduced us to the *Chinese* menu. She would go to Hunans to get a little taste of home. She introduced us to tasty dishes like Spicy Boiled Fish (which I am hopelessly addicted to & its a subtle kind of spicy so its not too hot): Lamb with Cilantro; and over time, we have added other favorites such as Stone Pot Eggplant with Ground Pork; Stone Pot Mushrooms with Pork; and Beef w/carrots in Sichuan Sauce(which I think is also on the Americanized Chinese menu. BTW, the Chinese menu is also written in English (also in the descriptions, as well.) Give it a try! :-)

My wife and I wanted to order some takeout while we were staying for a night at the La Quinta Inn in Lexington, off of Newton Pike road. We saw the Hunan takeout menu and ordered a Sweet and Sour Pork dinner platter for under $9. So, I was a little surprised as to why the total came to $14+. I double checked with the woman taking my order and she confirmed what I thought I heard. I attributed it to gratuity for the driver and thought nothing more of it. They delivered the food fast enough, but my jaw hit the floor when I looked at the receipt and saw where the extra $5 came from. I was charged a $5 gas compensation fee. That is more than enough to buy over a gallon of gas! This is ridiculous and a complete scam. This "gas compensation fee" is where theyre getting all their money.

I had Won-Ton soup, an egg roll, fried rice, and the Empress Chicken (Family Dinner, $14-ish). Most things on the appetizer plate are good, the spicy mustard in particular... the egg roll and soup come out first, with a fried shrimp and a spicy cabbage salad of some sort. Its all pretty good. The entree, however, wasnt as good - The chicken was cooked pretty hard, and the sauce was mediocre, somehow both too spicy and bland at the same time. There also werent any vegetables on the plate. Ive also had the Hunan Chicken, and had basically the same complaint about it. Overall, good appetizers, pretty decent service, and large portions on the entree plate kept us happy. Had enough left over to make up a full meal.

I used to frequent the New Circle rd. Hunans. First time to this one. Service person very rude and demanding(older asian lady). Whats more important was that my Hunan style sweet/sour pork that Ive treasured since college has been ruined by this place. TERRIBLE!!!! I bragged to my family about it only to recieve overbreaded ,undercooked (soggy not crispy) pork. Flat soft drinks with a very strong interest in us tipping and getting the hell out set the mood. UNBLVABLE, I HATE THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently stayed at the Hampton Inn nearby Hunan. It came highly recommended by some local friends & I am so glad we tried it. I just called in my order & walked over to picked it up. We ordered the sweet & sour chicken combo & Mongolian beef. They had it ready in 10 minutes & everything was fresh & hot. They accidentally forgot my egg drop soup & they came straight over & delivered to me. I have been craving there food ever since!

People should really give this place a second or third chance because the new owner and chef is AMAZING! Also Mr. Li is very nice and dedicated, and they serve REAL Chinese food, just ask for the special menu. The place also looks amazing inside. He is really trying to revitalize one of Lexingtons Original Chinese Food places. Check them out, tell them Shifu from Blue Lotus Health & Acupuncture sent you!

In this age of buffets and nondescript Chinese food that all tastes of pre-prepared and processed food, Hunan is a refreshing and delicious anomaly. It is Chinese food prepared the old fashioned way with fresh ingredients and a chef who has experience that didnt come from Lexington. Well done Hunan. Bravo.

Very impressed, not much to look at from the outside but everything was delicious. FYI.... chicken teriyaki takes a little longer to make than most dishes and they seem to bring stuff out when it is ready, can be a little awkward when eating with a group of people whos food arrives at different times.

Okay- I dont know how these other people can think this is great chinese food. I am from Cincinnati and I have had much better for a much more reasonable price. I mean it was either under or over cooked. I paid forty dollars for two dinners and two startes. Wow.. please do not waste your money.
