Incredible! I grew up in Iowa but moved to Chicago 15 years ago. SRB is big-city fabulous -- and Iowa nice. I was suffering from allergies so badly today (you can take the girl out of Iowa but you cant take the hayfever out of her itchy face, I guess) and I mentioned this to the gal at the counter and asked if there was a Walgreens nearby. She said no, but they might have something for allergies, did I want her to check? In a litigious, paranoid culture, we have knee-jerk reaction to a stranger who is not a doctor offering us aspirin, Claritin, etc. But thats silly, because in a straightforward case like this (sad, itchy-face woman, over-the-counter drug assistance) its a neighborly thing to do. They had Benedryl, but I skipped it in fear of being spacey during the lecture I had to give at the events center nearby. I wanted to write and share the story of that exchange because its so freaking nice to interact with people, not corporate schils, mannequins, or people so afraid of protocol that they dont use their heads/imaginations/common sense. Great coffee, too. All food items are stellar. Go there!

I absolutely love Scenic Route Bakery. I visit regularly and have never had a bad experience with any pastries, drinks or food. Their menu has so many good options and their pastries are always excellent - especially the cinnamon roll and chocolate croissant. I think their chocolate croissants are one of the best Ive ever tasted, right here in Des Moines, including ones from France. Id definitely recommend grabbing lunch here and enjoying a coffee for a bit while enjoying the interesting artwork covering just about every wall.

This place always looks busy and has queues. However, the staff work hard and tables turn over quite quickly so you dont have to wait long. The atmosphere is great and there are a good range of coffees. The hot chocolate is served at a perfect drinking temperature and it was excellent. The cakes all looked amazing so it was.

Love this East Village bakery, IMHO, best chocolate chip cookies in the DSM metro! They bake all day long so cookies are actually fresh. Just wish they would open Sundays, lots of foot traffic in the East Village all weekend. If you are down here be sure to hit Raygun at the same time, DSM world famous t-shirt shop.

Ive only recently noticed this place. Today is National Donut Day (huh?). I eat enough donuts already. I stopped in today and got a couple goodies to share with a friend. They were delicious. A peach muffin & something called a "pan pie". ... 4 pieces total for less than $10 (& free parking before 8 a.m.).

This is a excellent place to go for a coffee while reading, studying or for a study group to meet at. Hot beverages are nice and they also have snack and lunch menu ( specific hours ) The eggnog latte was amazingly delicious, unfortunately is seasonal, but if u go in winter, give it a try !

I love the charm of the Scenic Route Bakery. I stopped here everyday for coffee during a conference I attended in Des Moines, IA. I am still dreaming about the pumpkin spice latte, with fresh vanilla, and homemade whipped cream! <3 <3 <3 Truly the best cup of coffee I have ever had!!!!

My favorite coffee shop in town. Great, open space located right in the heart of the Historic East Village. Tons of natural light, free wi-fi, lots of seating. Perfect atmosphere for meeting friends or getting work done. Some of the best coffee and bakery items in the city.

I love SRB. The coffee is great, the atmosphere is perfect for whatever occasion youre there for, the pastries are bomb-diggity, Will is the man, and the absolute best thing? They dont play music, so you can sit there and enjoy a cup of coffee in peaceful bliss :) :) :)

Excellent sandwiches. Upscale. Very friendly. Would go back. Negatives were the lattes we had were pretty bland and prices were a little on the high side, but par for the area.

A nice place to relax and enjoy a latte and read on the couch or oversized chairs. Yummy filled croissants. My only complaint is that they dont have BAGELS & CREAM CHEESE!
