Ordered take out today (3/20/2016). It was the combination Beef - Chicken - Shrimp. Cost was $12.95. Ordered fried rice instead of white rice for $2 extra. Price with tax was $16.00 even. Because I was staying in a motel while in Ames, I asked for some plastic ware to eat with. I also asked for a paper plate. To the young Asian man at the check-out, this was a big hassle for him, but he eventually found some. Got back to my motel and opened the food containers. The main dish was only 3/4 full and when I put the contents on the plate I discovered there was NO beef and only 4 pieces of shrimp and some terrible tasting old chicken (last weeks maybe?) This place is an absolute rip-off. Would not recommend eating here to anyone, STAY AWAY.

This place sucked and that is me being nice. I ordered the Mongolian Beef and Chicken Shrimp and Broccoli. Both of these have no flavor at all. I also Order the Yan Shan Soup for two was $7.50. I went to the car look at it and the container was filled up 1/2 way. I mean when a customer order soup for that price fill it up for them. I went back inside to talk to the guy with the nasty ponytail, his response was "this is plenty for two." That is not the point, point is when you go to buy a large drink and they fill up it 1/2 way would you like it? Dont go to eat here food taste like crap also the customer service sucks too e.g. (guy with the nasty ponytail that runs the front.) Get bent.

We have frequented the Mandarin for 23 years and the owners are wonderful! They greet everyone as a friend. We also hosted a wedding rehearsal dinner in the back room. We had 65 guest and they said the food was great, raved on and on the service. The food was served family style and we had so many left overs we feed 20 more guest the next day for lunch. Thank you for your service to the Ames and surrounding communities. Signed , Crispy Beef / water chestnuts only & Sesame chicken (David & Donna)

They have a good menu and offer great food. I love their Kung Pao items and the Mandarin Chicken is the bomb, as is the Cashew Chicken. The lo-mein isnt as good as House of Chen but their tea makes up for it. The eggrolls arent really egg rolls... more of a spring roll with the paper thin wrapper. Decor is cool and serivce is prompt and friendly. One other issue is parking. Not a lot there and its tough to access the lot if Lincoln Way is super busy. Overall, a really good place to eat!

Absolutely the best crab rangoons Ive ever had and most agree. The only bad thing o have to say is that when my bf and I were finishing up our dinner once when we had gotten in at 8:30, we were asked to leave once it turned 9pm. We had already finished our meals and were just opening our fortune cookies so we werent just dilly dallying. So it was very rude and we simply didnt know how to react to the mans blatant disregard for his customer service.

Weve come twice now for Saturday lunch. Both times excellent service, delicious food. Complimentary tea served with the meal. We had green bean chicken and Mongolian beef. Both piping hot, generous servings and flavorful. I usually prefer hot and sour soup, but egg drop was the soup of the day and it too was delicious. Added bonus - nice, quiet and cozy.

My go-to takeout for American-style Chinese food in Ames. The Mandarins sizzling rice soup is one of the few foods I get cravings for. The family that runs the restaurant is always a treat to interact with and the restaurant decor is legit and would be the perfect setting for a ninja fight if one were to ever go down in Ames.

The Mandarin is my familys go to place when we want lunch. There isnt a week goes by that one of us arent in there. The food is excellent, the staff caring, and it is has a true family feel about it. We are not the only ones that feel that way, as the lunch service is usually 3/4 full or more. They do pickup as well as.

I have been a Mandarin customer since 1984-1985 and have always enjoyed the food and the service and the environment there. It was our top choice in Ames for Mothers Day take-out today. Always delicious and top-notch Chinese quisine - love it~! Keep the tradition going strong; highly recommended.

Ive eaten here for years. Love the mongolian beef, not sure why some people write such bad reviews but its my favorite Chinese restaurant anywhere. Im fairly picky when it comes to Chinese and this is by far my favorite. Of course its a subjective dish so to each their own.

We love to go here! I have food issues, and I know that they dont use MSG, so Im safe mostly. They food is hot and fresh, no matter the time of day. The staff is friendly and nice. They remodeled and expanded the restaurant last year and it is just gorgeous!!

fancy restaurant, but food is horrible. the chef really needs to learn how to cook chinese/asian dishes before putting them on the menu. any single chinese restaurant on campustown can do way much better than them.

I love the Mandarin! We drive up from Des Moines just to eat here. Everything is amazing & the service is fantastic. It is a family run business and the family is so personable. Definitely make the stop!

The food is great but this place has had many health violations, be warned. The staff is always kind, and comes with a nice setting.
