it is a shame a restaurant with such pretensions falls so miserably in the service department. If the owner reads this, please train everyone, including your maitre d and, more importantly, your servers. unhappy with my meal, i had asked them to take it back to the kitchen, explaining the reason (way too salty). the maitre d stopped by my table to inquire about the meal, starting to tell me how that particular dish is being made (as in "you dont know what youve ordered"). moreover, the server added that dish on the final check. when told to remove it from the bill, he indicated that "nobody told him to do so" and that he would have to ask the manager about it. unhappy, evidently, he brought back the corrected check, while telling me, again, about the dish and that i dont understand how it is being prepared, etc., etc. - inexcusable attitude. F minus. with respect to ambiance, theres not much of it. other than a small candle on the table, no flowers, nothing truly special (the venue itself must have been an office of some sort - as the low ceiling--made of cardboard squares--divulges...). too bad. i was truly looking forward to a wonderful evening. regretfully, this was spoiled by untrained staff.

The food was excellent. In this part of town there is no other place like it for food. Nevertheless I was put off by the fact that dishes are not priced individually. I got the 3 course prix fix initially. When I added one course it was not a 4 course meal plus extra anymore but $35.00 extra, $10.00 short of my 3 course. The service was alright although they dont seem to realize that their bread is burning hot when they serve it. Now my favorite place downtown is RL on Chicago Ave where the food is more social club like and relaxed but their décor is sublime. The crowd is fun and glamorous at RL. The décor at Michael is kind of bland and utilitarian and likewise their clientele seems to be terribly conservative, old and unglamorous, ugly, compared to Chicago. I miss Spago in Chicago terribly. It was fun, full of glamorous people and the food was sensational. If they could not make it here no one will. - Cuisiniere sign at the door: cuisiniere in French means stove or is the word for a woman, a man is a cuisinier. - Cassoulette on the menu: cassoulet is the proper word.

Despite having a last-minute change of plans and ending up in this quaint and elegant little nook in Winnetka, this was perhaps the best dining experience of my lifetime, thus far. Not solely the absolutely amazing food, the soft murmur of fellow diners, but most importantly – the hospitality and service was above and beyond any expectation one may have in up-scale fine dining. From the host to the waiters, etc., you are truly a valuable person when eating at Michael. Below is a list of our selections that evening (we did the 4 course) and I highly recommend the Duo of Lamb for lamb lovers, like myself; as well as the grilled foie gras and sautéed escargot. We will most definitely return in the near future. Grilled Foie Gras Butter Fried Veal Sweetbreads and Sautéed Escargots Organic Baby Arugula Salade Lyonnaise Duo of Roasted Breast of Duck & Duck and Black Trumpet Mushroom Galantine Sweet Potato Puree, Micro Turnips, Smoked Duck Jus Duo of Lamb Nouveau Crème Brulée Chocolate Dacquoise Bombe Crème Anglaise Also, the complimentary finger food is to die for.

Scary place. Have been there many times and enjoyed our meal. Left a review on another site "Love the place, but the wine dinner was disappointing." The establishment replied to this comment on 09.26.2016: Your comment about the wine dinner is ridiculous. You came in on a discount with your rewards benefits for a 5 course menu featuring Wagyu beef paired with 4 lovely wines for $79.00. I know exactly who you are and where you were seated. You actually had the audacity to expect me to pour unlimited wine immediately upon your blessed arrival. Your expectations are insane. Please do not return. I am happy to divorce you as a guest so I do not disappointed you in the future. We did not ask for wine, in fact we left some... If you are still "allowed in" good luck.

Michaels restaurant is definitely a first class experience and the food is excellent. I have read some of the comments on goggle and dont understand what some people expect from a restaurant. If you have any experience with french cuisine, you know the portions are small, but anyone with true dining experience would prefer a smaller portion thats phenomenal over a larger portion thats average. The waiters are excellent and very attentive. This is not a restaurant that will serve 400 to 500 a night, so there has to be excellent service to remain profitable. We have been there 4 times and it just gets better each time. Strongly recommended!!!!!!!

Not going back either. I was not impressed, though more for the quality of the food than the service. I have been to a large number of high and low end French restaurants in other cities, and I was particularly surprised by how undercooked the food was here. That in and of itself may not necessarily be a bad thing, but the juice from the meat started to make the dish kind of watery. The lamb seemed to be the best dish, the other dishes we had were good but I was just not impressed. On the whole, the atmosphere is great, the service was excellent, but the food does not justify the price you pay.

Much of the food was excellent but the service undid any possibility of an enjoyable evening. No welcome to the restaurant. Before we had even finished sitting down we were asked what we wanted to drink. Food and silverware was literally thrown in front of us. We were never asked if we wanted another drink or possibly some wine. We were told we couldnt wait to decide whether we wanted dessert - we needed to decide upfront. The check was thrown on the table with a "thanks" - no one ever asked if we enjoyed our meal. I am still kicking myself for leaving any kind of a tip.

Last night was the second time my wife and I ate at Michaels. The first time our Groupon was not honored so we rescheduled. Last night we had a 6:00pm reservation and were seated promptly. We had a 5 course dinner with 3 wine pairings. The food was good, portions were not small but tiny, and the service was incredibly poor. We skipped having coffee, even though it had been ordered, because it had still not been served after waiting about 10 minutes. We got our check at 8:30pm. Needless to say, even though the food was ok., we will not go back to Michaels, ever.

A small little place you might never notice unless someone put you in the know. Absolutely outstanding food. Every single bite is polished and perfected before it leaves the kitchen. Affordable French food with a great, down to earth proprietor and crew. A+ in every way whether you want to be in and out or get a 4 course meal. You dont have to head to Chicago for top notch food plus you avoid the hassles of the city and pretentious people & atmosphere and some city spots. PLEASE do yourself a favor and try this!

Our food was good but our service was awful!!! After a more than 40 min. wait we had to ask 3 people for our entree, we werent offered coffee, and when we asked for dessert we were told we had eaten too fast so it wasnt ready. I explained that we pre-ordered it when we ordered our meal well over 2 hours ago. The last straw was that they added 18% onto our bill. Im guessing they didnt expect a good tip on the $113.00 bill. We will never go back there again.
