Either I came at the very wrong time, or the people of Naperville have very low sushi standards. I was in the area for an event and stopped by Shogun, based on positive reviews. The experience was awkward and the quality of the food was sub-par, and the overall experience was in-line with what you would expect from a suburban strip mall sushi joint, not the 4+ stars as indicated. When I first arrived, the man standing next to the host station in a windbreaker jacket gave me a strange look. I couldnt tell if he worked there or not, he didnt seem like a patron, but he also didnt say anything to me, so I wasnt sure, and the whole experience started off strangely. I was alone, so opted to eat at the sushi bar. The waitress was friendly and attentive, brought me my beverage right away and got my order going. I was also disappointed to see there were no lunch specials, as every other sushi restaurant Ive dined in offer, but nonetheless, chose a few simple rolls (spicy tuna, salmon, the basics) and waited for the 4+ star deliciousness to start. To my surprise, Mr. Windbreaker stepped behind the sushi bar and began to make my meal, still in his jacket, which I now believe is a post-modern version of a chefs jacket. But really, it just extended the initial awkwardness. Stay awhile, chef. Make yourself at home. I received my food, and the disappointment really kicked in. The quality was minimal. The fish didnt taste fresh, the volume of fish per roll was minimal, and the whole experience just crumbled. Stellar sushi can make up for strange service, but when the only positive things are the waitress and the Coca Cola, youre not worthy of so many stars. People of Naperville, raise your standards. This was a sad, sad experience and I wish I had tried one of the several other nearby sushi joints on my trip!

This place is fantastic. It is always a must have when I come home for holidays and if I had more to spend I would come here even more often. Thought the place may look like a "hole in the wall" from all the the pictures of guests having birthdays line their walls it is because the severs and owners are extremely friendly and they will remember you. I went there with a group of Friends to celebrate the engagement if a couple of my fiends and the owner who always remembered us threw together a gift for them. Also every time we are in a group and we dont have one of the usuals with us they always remind us to bring them next time. Then to top that all off the cooks are very interactive and friendly. Additionally they usually have a buy one get one half offabout twice a year and if we forgot the coupon we usually get the discount anyway. All of this and the price for the food is about half of what you will pay elsewhere for a similar meal. One last tip I would recommend is spend the extra $3 on getting extra noodles they are well worth it and also request garlic bread crumbs from the cook for no additional charge.

The food was good. The cook was really friendly and outgoing. But we paid a lot of money for the amount of food we got. They also charge you for singing happy birthday to you and bringing you a plate of fruit. They could of at least told us there was a charge for it. They just added it on. Normally, places give it to you for free! Also, it would of been nice if we got to eat all our food all together. By the time I got my chicken I was done with my rice...definitely not going back. Theyre also pretty quick to come get the money after the give you the check. We felt rushed and I felt like I couldnt look through my check cause the Chinese lady was standing right in front of me waiting for my card! And yes they automatically add the tip onto your check. Again, not going back!

Ordered for carry out and I felt meat portions were minimal. We got three orders of teriyaki chicken and one order of honey chicken. My brothers portion of honey chicken was a good sized portion. I felt they split the teriyaki chicken in three minimal portions because we didnt get as much as him. Chicken was good(a little too sweet for me), rice was really good and noodles were ok. House dressing is really good, but thought the soup was bland and was basically water. Sushi was really good. Maybe if I wouldve eaten there and gotten the whole experience my review would be different. The mixed drinks are really good too and I really like the atmosphere. Its like a small cozy/trendy joint. But the service was awesome, the girl that helped us was very friendly.

Great place to celebrate a birthday (or any other occasion)! A table can fit 8-10 people comfortably. Our chef was good, telling jokes and performing tricks while cooking our food. The birthday boy was in the mood for golden sauce (aka egg yolk sauce or Tokyo egg sauce) and he was not disappointed. The sauce only comes with the shrimp entrée, but you can order it on the side for $2 extra to put it on everything, which is what you want to do. Each entrée comes with a shrimp appetizer, miso soup, salad, and rice. Fried rice cost extra, but you might as well go all in. The salad dressing was really good and I actually wished I had a little more ice burg lettuce to go with it. Entrees cost about $19 and up.

Came here to take my dad out for his birthday. Service was phenominal and the food was outstanding. This place is better than all the other hibachi places in the area. Best of all they take a picture of everyone in your party and you get to put it on their wall with all the other pictures so it becomes a great place to visit to and rekindle old memories. Our Chef was funny and was more interactive than the other places in the area. Their prices are slighly lower compared to the other places, but quality and service are not sacrificed at all. I recommend everyone give this place a try!

I went here for my 16th birthday and it was so good. The food is amazing and the service is awesome. They are so nice! I have been to JMK Nippons and its good, but not as good as shogun. Its cheaper and I like how the walls are covered with peoples pictures who had birthdays. They gave me a little keychain and a big pineapple boat. I highly recommend this place, even if you dont like Asian food. The steak and chicken and noodles were great! I will definitley be going here in the near future.

This was like an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. I asked them not not to prepare the entree, paid for my drink, and left. This place had so many good reviews; I was completely baffled. My seaweed salad was frozen. My Pina Colada was not blended; it was just mix. The soup was bland. The dinner salad came in a bowl and the bottom was so full of water I could pour it onto my plate. After the simplest of foods being disgusting, I was not about to risk the money or my stomach on the scallops.

We are regulars and have been going to Shoguns for years. Now they even know our grandbabies when we come in. The food is consistently fabulous. Shoguns is the only place we have found that even has the egg yolk batter and when we have found it at other establishments it has not even compared to Shoguns. Our kids who are now grown always request Shoguns for their birthdays and for any special occasion. The teriyaki scallops with egg yolk batter....out of this world. :)
