We were visiting Naperville, Illinois and decided that our celebration dinner of the weekend would be Hibachi. After searching online reviews and recommendations, we decided that Kiku would be the best choice. BIG MISTAKE!!! We walked in on Saturday evening 3/21/15. They were very busy and we were told nastily that they werent accepting ANY walk-ins for the rest of the night by the owner/manager on duty and that we couldnt stay. WHAT...YOU DONT WANT MY MONEY? Even if its hours to wait for a table, most customers can make their own choice. All restaurants say there is a given time to wait for a table when busy, and customers can make the decision to stay and wait, or move on. There was plenty of room at the bar to have appetizers and drinks if we had wanted to stay, even eat dinner, but when they told us NO we couldnt stay, we gladly took our money elsewhere. We headed up the road to Shinto, had a small wait and the absolute best Hibachi(Best Shrimp in my life) and Sushi weve ever had, not to mention friendly service and attentive management. Being from Cleveland and supporting Michael Symons restaurants before he was an Iron Chef, I know what fine dining and good service is. Shinto is the epitome of those expectations...Kiku is just rude and has let their success go to their head. Wont be back on my next visit to Naperville but I am really looking forward to Shinto again!

We visited KiKu based on some of the recommendations on this site. BAD IDEA....my wife and I both love sushi and have enjoyed it at probably over 100 different restaurants in the U.S. and Japan. We ordered only sushi and everyplace we have gone, there are TWO pieces per order. When we got the sushi, it was half the amount we had expected. Nowhere on the menu did it say per piece. Not only that, it was very expensive versus other restaurants. We did bring this up with the owner but he was unresponsive and didnt really care what we thought. He asked about the quality. The quality was average overall. You can get much better sushi and at a better price at Sagano in Barrington. You can even get better sushi at Kampai which is a revolving sushi restaurant in Arlington Heights. If you love sushi and know quality, this place is WAY overpriced and not worth the money. I rate this as POOR and only one star--not five as indicated.

The ambiance is very nice, tastefully decorated, very good and attentative wait staff. But (isnt there always a but), this place is way overpriced. My wife and I both ordered sushi samplers and some additional rolls. The sushi was fresh and beautifully prepared, but the sushi chef used way too much wasabi on ours. I like the bite every now and again but my wife doesnt so much. It seemed especially heavy on the shrimp and crab pieces. Every other place Ive ordered a sampler like this, and usually the sampler is significantly less pricey, they come with miso soup and a tossed salad. We got neither with our meal. We dropped a C note with no problem and only one of us had a drink. Next time Im in the area, Ill look for someplace different to satisfy my sushi craving.

The food and atmosphere at this place are good, but their service is below expectations. On one of my more recent trips, they forgot part of the order and I discovered the waitress added a extra 7 bucks to the tip when my Visa statement came at the end of the month. So being out for food and money, I gave them a call. Instead of offering to credit my account or mail me a gift certificate to fix the issue, the manager says Id actually have to come into the restaurant. Cheapskate didnt even offer to compensate for the missing items. Considering most places will comp your meal when they screw up, this was disappointing. Not a big loss though, as I like Shogun and Domo 77 better anyway.

This place is a hidden gem. Awkwardly located in a strip mall between a hardware and a craft supply store. (You might look at it from outside and say "really?") But, step inside to find a modern hip restaurant. Unique Asian decorations and furniture. Trip-hop down tempo music thats there but not "in your face." Its a formula that works perfectly. Sushi is excellent. Great shashimi and nigiri. Their rolls are pretty amazing, too. The hibachi is good (I am not a big fan of Hibachi, but my family loves it.) The chefs who prepare it at your table and always good. The waitstaff is excellent and attentive. This is where I spend my birthday every year. Highly recommended.

Its our favorite sushi place anywhere. You have to know what to order. They are known for their Godzilla roll. We also love the Catepillar. And we sample others on each visit. Rarely try one that we dont like. We love their miso dressing on their salad. They have some amazing warm sake. Atmosphere is great! If one is turned away because they are booked and full until close, maybe they dont want to make sushi all night long into the wee hours for everyone continuing to walk in. A full restaurant typically means that its a great restaurant. Not a reason to give 1 star review based on their being full to capacity thru closing time.

Let me start by saying that this was worst sushi I have ever had. The fish felt like it was stored in a freezer for a week and then put in a fridge for about another day. After that, it was rolled together to make a terrible, tasteless meal. The service was acceptable and the receptionist and waiter were nice. We were there for lunch so the tacky trance music playing at 90 decibels did not make for a good atmosphere. I guess if you want to go for a club atmosphere, it would be good for you. We didnt have a chef cook in front of us, so I cant comment on that, but overall this was a terrible dining experience.

We brought out son here to celebrate his birthday. We were warmly greeted and immediate seated. Our waitress came over in a timely manner and had our drinks, appetizers and entrees ordered and on the way very quickly. Out Ched was knowledgable and entertaining. My 9 year old daughter was absolutely amazed. The staffers very accommodating of a severe food allergy and made sure there was none near the table. Our food was delicious and cooked just as we ordered. No complaints from anyone, not even the picky kids. As other have said, pricey but you get what you pay for. We will definitely be back!!

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I went here with my husband for his birthday and got the worst treatment in under ten minutes I have ever experienced. The hostesses ignored us and after being ignored a man comes up to us and a couple next to us. The man was rude short with us and made no eye contact. The white couple is told they can be seated in under 20 minutes and us in 45. So if youre African American and want your money appreciated then take your business elsewhere. There are plenty of better places for Habachi. Shinto and Shogun are amazing and not that far away
