I was so excited for my first visit. I have missed having a really good quality bakery in the neighborhood since I left Denver. I came here after driving by it the past couple of weeks. I was incredibly disappointed. The ham and cheese croissant was lacking in filing, the croissant was flaky, but it was clear the bakery skimped on the butter. What was most disappointing, however, was the service. A shop like this cannot survive solely on quality because its price point is so cost prohibitive ($4.45 for a ham and cheese croissant) for most in the neighborhood. To survive, the service must also match the top quality product. Upon entering, I told them that I was visiting for the first time, but had two negative interactions in the five minutes I was there. First, after saying hi, another customer was helped even though I was clearly in the store first. Second, and probably the most surprising. I was asking about the herb dinner rolls and what kind of herbs were used. They said Herbes De Provence. I asked doe they us the typical blend that is found in the USA (which includes lavender) or is it the more traditional blend. Lucas at the register proceeded to tell me that the blend was standard and there were no variances in the blend. Without saying it, he was telling me I was an idiot for asking ... Im fine with having a productive discussion about the product, but to simply tell me that I was wrong is outrageous. I will not be going back.

I would like to start by saying that the products here are of great quality but lately I have been extremely dissatisfied with their business practices. I have watched the pastries get smaller while the prices increased as of July 1st. Every Friday I go in and get two slices of flatbread for our Friday lunches, they are usually large enough or my husband and I to eat 2 times. Today, I went in and the flatbread was a small oval piece. When I asked about it I was advised that it is a personal size now but the same amount of dough. It is clear to me that this is not the case. For the record, I fully support your increase in price and paying all employees above minimum wage but when you compromise on the product to do so, it is not OK and I cannot continue to consume a different product at an increased price.

Great addition to Evanston local bread market. A small place with freshly baked, artisan breads and pastries like croissants -very good, scones, cinnamon rolls. Lovely, crunchy crust on the bread with great taste. Every day there are a few types of breads baked so every day is a new tasting experience. When you come late however you choice could be very limited. Great bread-making place. Enjoy.

The art of baking (and more) is alive and well at Hewn! Their thoughtful, artisanal approach delivers authentic, delicious, beautiful food. Exceptional pastries -- try their seasonal galette for a classic yum factor. Their breads are perfection, and dont skip their traditional baguette - its the best baguette out there!

Great place for artisanal bread. Which, the world needs more of. I like the ambiance inside this small bakery. Its very well done and the choices are always interesting. Ive only had one loaf from here but it lasted for longer than store-bought conventional bread. And I felt like I was making a healthier choice!

Amazing French style bakery. What a find even in Evanston. Slow raised bread looks great and taste delicious. Every day there is another surprise waiting. The croissants here are probably the best in Chicago area.

Great pastries, friendly staff, awesome little neighborhood shop! Were completely hooked on the almond croissants and mini monkey bread. Im on my way there now for an espresso and a baguette for dinner later!

Really cute bakery with amazing bread. Unfortunately, they may not stock your favorite bread and you might have to order in advance (e.g., wanted brioche buns but was told they only take orders for those).

The best bread I have ever had. The almond croissants are also amazing. My only complaint if that sometimes they run out of bread if you come close to closing. Although you can call and reserve an item.

Came here on a whim to grab some pastries and coffee, and they had a huge selection! Everything we got was delicious, especially the cheese brioche. Our coffee and chai latte were very tasty also.

Best bread within 100 miles, and great pastries, esp croissant. Just had my best latte ever here: They recently switched to new local roasting company, Counter Culture, with phenomenal flavor.

Best bakery in Chicagoland!! The breads are of the finest quality grain. Definitely worth a trip to Evanston. If you want to experience bread made the old fashioned way, go to Hewn!!
