Terrible service with mediocre food. Have been going there off and on for the past three years. Recently, Ive gone and just ordered a piece of naan. I try to pay cash when I can, out of courtesy and respect for how much credit card transaction fees are for the restaurant. Recently ,the man at the register fished for change for some time. Eventually he gave me a lot of pennies and couple of dimes for change. I got back to my car realized he had stiffed me by about 60 cents. Petty and lazy, I thought, since he knew he didnt have the proper change and was either too lazy to get another roll of quarters or worse, indifferent. Not the end of the world though. A couple weeks later, I order another piece of naan. This time, I decide Im going to pay with my card since I didnt feel like getting stiffed again. Its the same man at the register. I offer my card and then he tries to tell me at first that they dont accept cards. This is strange, because Ive done this many times in the past with no problems except for this one time. When asked why, he then said that they do accept cards, but not for that amount. I politely told him that I dont see a sign that says there needs to be a minimum order amount to use a card. He derides me as he accepts my card and mutters stuff under his breath as he begrudgingly swipes the card. I let me him know that he needs to post something to let the customer know that there is a minimum otherwise its on him. He was incredibly rude for the second time in a row. I really hope that hes not the owner even though it seemed like he might be. If he is, then you really should avoid this place as this man was awful enough for me to have to post a review. The food is mediocre. The naan. when not burnt to a crisp, is good enough. The curries vary wildly in consistency. The chicken curry is something Ive had a bunch of times. Sometimes it was way, way too salty to the point where I had to throw it out since the only other option was to dilute with water to the point where its a soup rather than a curry. Other times its just ok. Consistency is not the restaurants strong suit. The prices are a little on the high side compared to the other Indian restaurants nearby. Id recommend going to Ghareeb Nawaz or Ryhanas Cuisine instead of this place. Both are relatively close by to Taj Mahal and offer cheaper, better Indian food.

This was my favorite Indian restaurant until yesterday, this new management isnt up to par. 1. I tried calling in, so the first guy told me that they didnt sell something that was on the menu and he simply hung up after being frustrated. So, we callled back and spoke to someone more helpful who knewn the menu, but he told us that it would take 20 minutes to prepare. Needless to say, our total wait time was 1 hour. There was anothe frustrated, patient, customer waiting for a long time in the lobby as well. Yet, they didnt offer anything to accomodate or to express their gratitude for our patience. This was how the operated before, they made sure their customers were satisfied, and this was why I was there about 4 times per week. 2. After getting home with my meals, I noticed that theyd mixed up my order by flip flopping the sauces for the Chicken Tikki Masala with the Shrimp Masala. Shrimp Masala is very spicy and Chicken Tikki Masala is sweet, so this was a major issue. However, the drive is too far, so we worked thru it by doctoring up our meals at home. . 3. They didnt fill the containers like before, they were filled about 3/4 way, and it was mostly filled with broth. They didnt give as much meat as they did before. I must say that the food still taste good but the portion size, service, and timing is poor. So, I will not go out of my way to drive those 10 miles any longer. They need to make sure Suri comes back because he was a great asset to this business, in every way.

Ever since the new management has come in, this place is heading towards a clear nose-dive. Wouldnt be surprised if they run out of business soon. We visited the place twice after the new disastrous management took over to bring down the popularity of the place to dust. The first time we ordered veg thali, something which we have had in the past as well, it took them forever to get our dishes and when it finally arrived, the number of items in the 2 thalis were different. After lot of confusion, they assured that missing items are on the way and we kept staring at our plates. It finally arrived and when we asked them what it was, the reply came -"chicken"!! Veg thali with chicken....when told that we had ordered veg thali, the reply quickly changed to paneer!! Argghh....bad..bad..worst service is what i have to say The second time we ordered chicken and it was so hard that no matter how hard you try you couldnt break it!! I feel sorry for the earlier management and really wish they come soon if they want to save this place from closing down.

I loved this place! The food is really well done, and the chai was perhaps the best Id ever had - very sweet and milky, but without being overdone at all. The staff are hardworking, efficient, and thoughtful, and I was pleased to see that the menu listed something Id never had before: Navratan Korma (vegetables cooked with nuts and fruit in a creamy sauce). It was delicious! My partner got Saag Paneer - a common choice among my dining partners - and Taj Mahals version was among the best Ive had (and not greasy at all). The decor is, well, minimal, although in my opinion, it could stand to lose the Coco-Cola fridge and the Indian music video playing flat screen. The portions arent ginormous, but my partner and I both went away plenty full without an appetizer or dessert. Now if I can just keep myself from going back there every time I get hungry this weekend!

Just went to Taj Mahal today for the first time with a friend - Im Indian and she is Pakistani. Probably some of the hardest critics since we have basically grown up with some of this food. A couple of the reviews in the past werent that great but we honestly enjoyed the food! We found out that the place has had a change of owners recently. So that may be a factor to take into consideration when reading reviews for this place. We were really impressed, it truly was authentic food! Enjoyed the biryani lots - typical for North Indians and Pakistanis. Definitely would recommend this place for students around UIC campus. The only thing I docked a star for was because I found it quite pricey compared to other restaurants (including Indian food) in the area.

Ive grown very fond of Indian food over the past few years and Indian is among my top 3 favorite cuisines now. Taj did not rate very well for me. Besides the service being extremely slow, even for Indian, the flavors just werent there. Everything tasted bland to me - spicy, but bland in every other sense. And for people who seek out vegetarian options and figure Indian as a safe bet most of the time, there were as few options as most other restaurants in the mid-priced non-steakhouse, non-American style cuisine (i.e. maybe half a dozen or so from the whole menu).
