Having moved here from the NYC vicinity about 10 months ago, the natural inclination is finding a replacement for every type of food that exists. Chicago, being a city with diverse culinary choices, makes this task pretty easy. Last night, for the first time, I enjoyed REAL shabu shabu (with very fresh vegetables!!!! ), amazingly creamy and sweet hotatai (fresh scallop, served sashimi style), and other appitizers that balance between showing respect to the Japanese cusine as well as a solute to creativity. There are a few downsides, the rice used in their maki rolls is too moist/soft, which takes away from the texture of the fish and other ingredients of the roll. Also, even though there is no question about the quality of meat used in the shabu, the slicing of the meat should be thinner to preserve the tenderness of the meat when cooking in the boiling pot (thicker the meat, longer it takes to cook thoroughly, making the outer layer of meat tougher). If youve never had shabu shabu, i highly recommend trying it at this place. Shabu shabu is a hotpot/fondue-like cooking style where you boil vegetables and meats at your table. The food is then eaten with a sauce.

Food was served quickly once they took our orders and the Tonkotsu Ramen was really good. It doesnt come with an egg, I believe you need to order on the side. The broth was delicious although I was not a fan of the ginger bits in the soup. The sesame was a nice touch. The Pork was falling apart-- so delicious! The noodle was firm and good for Ramen standards. I think their portion is bigger (at least noodle and broth) than other ramen places in town in my opinion. The service was friendly and attentive.

Cocoro is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Chicago with some of the tastiest dishes youll find that represent fairly traditional Japanese dishes. Some of my go tos include the tonkatsu, sushi, grilled mackerel, and chicken karaage. Cocoro is an absolute gem in Chicago, and easily accessible as well. If youre a fan of Japanese cuisine, absolutely add this one to your list, and Im confident that itll make it into your regular rotation.

I went for lunch and the food was ok, nothing special. But the most hilarious part was the waiter with the weird accent. Id read the reviews before I went so I couldnt stop giggling when the white guy with the strange Asian-who-speaks-bad-English accent was my waiter. HILARIOUS. Ok back to the food. Nothing special. I still like Ra better and its a *gasp!* FRANCHISE RESTAURANT!

This is in my top 5 and this is my 10 year old daughter and wifes favorite restaurant. Weve been coming her for over 5 years and have never had a bad experience. The owner is such a sweetheart and my daughter has some hello kitty souvenirs from her. We love the ramen and the Shubu Shubu for two. Red bean ice cream is so unique. Please stop in and allow Yoko to blow you away.

I have been coming here for more than 3yrs now. Never ever disappointed my appetite once. Their quality is one of the top authentic Japanese restaurant in Chicago but you will like their affordable price for sure. I bring everyone of my good friends, girlfriend, parents etc to this place to share my awesome experience with them.

The most authentic Japanese restaurant I have found in the area. You will see a lot of Japanese people eating here and enjoying the selections. Large menu you with multiple ramen dishes and fantastic appetizers. Havent tried the sushi yet but there is a sushi bar inside.

As a person whos being too almost all the Ramen shops in Chicago, Cocoro has lower than average quality Ramen. Broth is really runny, no consistency; too much scallion, no flavor whatsoever. Anyway if youre looking for good Ramen, do not come to this place.

I lived in Japan 5 years. Love fusion too but this real Japanese food. Kitchen food. The Sushi they just do. And their fish is so fresh. Not like some other ethnic Sushi places. Its the specials here that rule. Real Japanese home and restaurant food.

We ordered the shabu shabu; it took an hour before it was ready. The appetizers were decent and the bilingual waitstaff helpful. There was a huge party of teenagers who took over the center of the place and wrecked the evening for everyone else.

Super friendly service. Fast preparation and cozy quarter. Next time we will wait to put our main dish in a little after app comes out so we have a breather. Stuck with the sushi and was delicious! Look forward to exploring their menu

the fact they make gluten free sushi makes me super happy because there is no other restaurant in chicago that makes gluten free sushi. i am so happy they care about gluten allergy people.

This is a real good Japanese restaurant, recommended by Japanese colleagues. The eel is really good. Recommend the seiro, kind of their specialty.
