We decided to give the University Diner at try for breakfast. We arrived about 9:30 am on a Saturday. When we arrived the restaurant was mostly empty; there were only 5 tables with people. There were 4 waitresses and a hostess working. The restaurant was NOT busy. We noticed that the restaurant was dirty. Our table was sticky and we had to get a table rag from the bus boy to wipe off the table top. Two waitresses were arguing loudly with a cook. Making quite a noise. That is when we saw that the cook has long braided hair with no hair net; shaking his head and hair wildly while arguing in the cooking area. yuk! Because of the ruckus, no one noticed our arrival. After 15 minutes of watching the show going on in the cooking area....the guy busing table took pity on us and brought us 2 coffees. 10 more minutes and still no one noticed us. That when I got up and got two menus. We read the menus for 10 more minutes and we were ready to order. 10 more minutes we waited as no one had noticed us. Again....the restaurant was not busy. 4 waitresses, 1 hostess and 2 cooks just screwing around. The couple in the booth in front of us had been waiting since before we arrived. The man stood up and tried to get the attention of a waitress who was playing with her phone. At this point we had been in the restaurant for 35 minutes with no service so we got up and left. They had the nerve to charge us $4.18 for two bad cups of coffee. The University Diner sucks.....we will never go back.

University Diner was "our place." My wife and I first dated there, and while I was in the military, would make it a priority whenever I we were in town to come and eat. We knew the menu by heart as well as the waitresses (and they knew us). We were even excited to bring our newly born kid there. The place meant so much to us. So you can imagine our surprise when we visited today and experienced an hour long wait time for breakfast and the food just...wasnt the same. The French Toast was a staple of our diner diving, and you have changed it. It is not the same, it is worse. The grits...worse. The skillet that my wife has been ordering there for over 10 years...worse. We were bitterly disappointed at the lack of usual love the food received. We inquired what happened, and learned that you are under new management. New Management, you ruined the diner. It was one of the few things outside of family that I enjoyed about Jacksonville. The University Diner and The Donut Shoppe. At least The Donut Shoppe hasnt sold out. You are horrible now, University Diner. And I am making sure that all of my friends and family know of your fall.

Ive been coming to this place for years and Ive never had an issue. Today I got a to-go order and my server, Sarah, was awesome. She was naturally funny and polite; not the Chick Fil A kinda polite but the "I actually like my job" polite. Very personable. She even sat me at a table while waiting for my to-go order. Ordered the Philly steak omelet with a side of bacon. My toast, bacon, and fries (they had run out of grits since it was almost closing time) were all packaged separately from the omelet, which made sense. Sarah apologized when they didnt have grits and offered several substitutes. She even topped off my coffee when I was leaving. (The omelet was reeeeeally good and a nice sized portion. The sides were still warm when I got home. The coffee was even made fresh when I ordered it.) I typically do not give tips when ordering to-go food but I definitely gave one to Sarah because she was very friendly, almost like someone I went to school with or something. Nice! Of course Ill be back soon.

1st time there today. They get a star because the server was nice and food was good. Other than that, I dont know how this place passes inspections. It is filthy! The air vents in the ceiling have about 20yrs of mold and dust, they are literally black dirty. There are two ceiling tiles missing by the kitchen with brown stuff around them as if they had a leak and just left it there. When she handed me the booster to put on the seat it was sticky and had old food build up all along the sides, theyve obviously never been cleaned either. The floor looked like it had been swept but never mopped. She had to clean the high chair before bringing it over (should have been done when putting away). I am not exaggerating at all, check for yourself. There is NO excuse for having a place of business that serves food that filthy. I stayed because we were super hungry and didnt want to go to a fast food place. If you own this place or work there, please clean it.

There was a table of 30!! Which was not my waitresss fault. Then I saw people who got there after me (in my waitresss section) get their food first, finish eating and leave before I ever got my food. After an hour I see my waitress walking around and only after I gave her the "wheres my food" stare she realized we had no food and went to get it. We always go there on the weekend and never had this happen. Ever. Its the fastest place to eat a good breakfast on Saturday or Sunday mornings. After we got our food it was all definitely worth the wait. Their food is so good. Best in Jacksonville. Their French toast is perfect. Would have given it a 5 star if I didnt see 3 others served before us who ordered after us. I still left a pretty good tip. Maybe shell share with the cook.

If I could give it zero stars I would. We waited over 5 minutes to even be acknowledged when sitting at the counter. When they finally brought water, the waitress asked for a towel to wipe the counter, which was thrown on the floor near her feet by another staff member. The waitress then picked the rag up off the floor and cleaned the counter with that. By that time we still had not received our coffee, there was major attitude going on behind the counter, so we canceled our order and left. We will never go back.

I guess its all perspective..I LOVED it! The small town feel and friendly peeps were just icing on the cake. The shrimp is as good as other "not to be named" long time eateries in Mayport and the beaches. Orings are at least an 8 but they need to bring you some dip forem...HINT hint. 2 months later....I took the family this time, bacon burger will stretch your mouth, well worth it the effort!

My recent visits have been awful. The food is no longer good, service is even worse! We sat for 7-8 minutes before we got menus, then waited another 10 before our order was taken...then another 20 before we got our food.....then had to wait to get something to eat with. WTH. Grits taste like water, meat overcooked, French toast bland....dont think Ill be back.....
