I am a loyal customer of California Tortilla for 9+ years now and have gotten to know the staff (which changes frequently) and also the managers who have been there over the years. In addition to coming into the restaurant for lunch frequently, I have also ordered a catering from California Tortilla as well. The manager who has always had the staff working diligently, the restaurant clean and tidy with the trash always being taken out, the utensils always refilled, and just an overall nice and friendly manager who made the experience of eating here very pleasurable and relaxing (especially during my lunch break) was Diane. I am sadden that I came in to eat today looking for Diane, as I have gotten to know her schedule because I come so often, to find out she is no longer an employee there. She delivered my catering and it was absolutely flawless, a woman who keeps the whole store in line (mind you Ive seen plenty of managers who are unprofessional) I am outraged! How can a woman who puts so much time and effort be let go from the restaurant? This is the absolute worst mistake this restaurant has ever made and after seeing the resulting managers that are still employed there it is safe to say I will NEVER return to this restaurant again. I have plenty of negative experiences with other workers and managers on plenty occasions, but never wrote a review because Diane always fixed their mistakes the next time I came to the restaurant. I watched Will, I took notice to the name tag, come in from a smoke break (as he announced it) and touch things on the line with his bare hands (knowing he probably didnt wash them before returning to work after a cigarette break). This turned my stomach and I walked out of the store. I have ordered delivery before and my chips and queso and drink were forgotten, I called just to inquire if they could be delivered when the driver went out again for deliveries and Lexi answered the phone with the worst attitude and customer service only to tell me she would have my food delivered...and it never came. The owner of this restaurant should be ashamed of himself and should really rethink who he has working at his restaurant. I will never recommend California Tortilla again and will be sure to tell everyone I know that eats here about my experiences.

I have always liked California Tortilla in Newark, especially for the outdoor seating area which is good when I stop in during a bike ride or when I have my dogs with me. Tonight, though, was a disappointment. When I approached the order counter there was only one other customer ahead of me. However, the one employee working the order counter was on the phone with a customer going over some problem with an order. It went on and on and on. There were other employees in the kitchen and prep areas, mostly standing around, and no movement by anyone to help out at the order station for several minutes, until about the second or third time I went back out to the patio to check on my dogs. Then it was 15 minutes from the time stamp on my receipt to when my order was finally ready. Yes, this was a Friday night at 7:30 but the place was practically deserted - there were twice as many employees as customers in the place. It did appear that one or two employees were preparing a delivery order but, again, there was no urgency on the part if the employees serve the customer standing in front of them. I suspect El Diablo and Qdoba have really cut into California Tortillas business. And I can see why.

I thought Id give them a try, since I love Chipotle so much and heard this restaurant was a similar option. I wasnt impressed. The portions are smaller than their competitor and the chicken was dry, almost flavorless. I also ordered their nachos, which werent any better than what you can get at Taco Bell for 99 cents. The person who took my order seemed like a zombie counting down the minutes until it was time to leave. The touch screen beverage machine was pretty cool, but Id rather deal with a less flashy soda machine and get a better value with the food. Ill be relying on Chipotle when I need a Mexican fix for now on.

Delivery took over two hours and I live less than a mile away. Food was cold. Worst burritos, quesadillas, etc. on campus. Ill be sticking to el diablo and chipotle from now on. For delivery Ill pay the extra dollar for Sante Fe. Ordered chips/guac, quesadilla, and burritto. Chips were stale, chicken was dry, and everything was cold. We called back an hour after ordering delivery, they told us there was "confusion" and our order just left the store. Another hour and 15 minutes later and our food finally came. This place is the worst and this is not my first bad experience.

California Tortilla has been a staple in the Newark community for many many years now... After the excitement of new Burrito establishments like El Diablo & Chipotle come and go, I always find myself returning to Cali Tort for consistent, excellent quality food with a great, laid back, friendly atmosphere. They are always willing to help make sure I am satisfied, as opposed to the other establishments who literally try to rush you in and out as fast as they possibly can. Thanks for being the best!

The food is good but their delivery service is horrible. The cashier told me the delivery time would be 1 hour, 30 minutes. After that time passed, I called again to see the status of my food....turns out they still hadnt prepared it and tried to blame it on having only one driver. I have been to CalTor during the summer months and the place is usually empty, so I know they are giving me BS. Never ordering from there again

I love this place! The food always tastes good, the ingredients are fresh and high-quality, and the staff is friendly. Great place to grab a bite in between classes or with family/friends. Also, they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options.

Ive been to both chipotle and El Diablo and I have to say I did like Cal Tor a lot. The staff was friendly and the they give you a good portion of food. This place has been here since I was a kid and I hope it continues to do well.

Really sad...the taco salad is half the size it used to be...the beef was like old pot roast...no vegetables, just a bowl of lettuce. Really sad to see this place cutting too many corners...

Their burritos arent bad but a little messy. What I prefer to get is their nachos and then I add JT Pappys Hickory Heaven BBQ Sauce. Whoa. Its an awesome combination.

Crunchy BBQ burrito is very good, the employees are nice although the inside feels like something is missing, as it is quite large and quiet sometimes.

This place lags behind other Mexican restaurants in the area. The food is inferior compared other nearby Mexican restaurants for a higher price.

They have an insane amount of salsa choices. Which is good. Prices are pretty good and its more of a sit down place than chipotle or El Diablo
