Interesting place. We went here because we heard it was good. It has a very unique menu. They are going for the gastropub vibe, and kind of hit it. There were five of us, so we had a broad sample of the food. The menu is a lot of pulled pork and things with waffles. For so many waffle-based dishes, the waffles are kind of bland and dry. But the meat is very tasty and well seasoned and prepared... fried chicken sandwich was nice, the "porque madame" was interesting and flavorful. The sausage gravy bowl was outstanding. Couple other things we got were ho-hum. They serve water in chilled wine bottles with basically large shot glasses. We were sitting outside and it was hot... it was nice they kept bringing bottles out, but I had to ask for a large glass with ice. Obviously they want to push the (extensive) beer selection. The service was not the best. The staff seemed - while not unfriendly - decidedly not friendly. More like just going through the motions. The busboys were the most amiable and attentive of the bunch. The food runners dropped and ran before you could really ask for anything. I expect better service at this price point. (and maybe umbrellas on the patio, guys... you can get them from the liquor company on the cheap) That said, the food might bring me back on a cooler evening.

Walrus + Carpenter is my over-all second favorite restaurant, and my first favorite restaurant outside of New Haven. Heres why. Solid selection of spirits. All the spirits they offer are made in America. Solid selection of beer on tap. OUTSTANDING food. They have a sriracha-honey fried chicken that is simply out of this world. If youre going with a group of four, you have to get the Notorious P. I. G. It aint cheap, but it comes with nachos, maple pork belly, baby backs, andouille sausage, pork shoulder, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, cornbread, walrus pie, and chess pie. Youre pretty much guaranteed to have left-overs. OUTSTANDING service. The last time I was there, I got up to get my waiters attention to change my order and I was greeted by a different waiter, the bartender, AND the owner just to make sure everything was alright. I really liked how attentive they all were. That one incident aside, though, the wait staff is ALWAYS super-friendly, attentive, helpful - and, goodness - patient. There have been times when my table (its never me!) is less than decisive, and the wait staff always takes it in stride. The ambience is I guess rustic American, and I wouldnt recommend the place for young families.

The worst place Ive ever been to. The ONLY time we saw the waitress was when she took our order and brought us our drinks. They have water glasses on the table that are about the size of a double shot. I had ask for a glass of ice which she brought me with no straw. I decided I wanted a drink, but since our waitress was nowhere to be found my husband had to go to the bar to order it. He ordered a jack and coke but they had no jack daniels. He then ordered a captain and coke but they didnt have captain morgan either. We ordered the poutine and the fries were so hard they actually hurt my husbands teeth. When our burgers came they were extremely small, there was an inch of bun all around the small burger. My husband didnt like his at all and didnt eat it. Mine was mediocre at best.I was supposed to get macaroni and cheese with my burger but they brought mashed potatoes instead. When it was time for the check my husband had to ask a different waitress to get it for us because we still hadnt seen our waitress. Worst place Ive ever been to.

So much to say, so little space. This place is really special. Like - super special good. The entire experience was incredible. The food is AMAZING. Thoughtfully prepared, well portioned, cooked perfectly, and very signature. Everything about the food fit their vibe and it went above and beyond what we expected. Our good friend who came up from NYC for the weekend said this was the best BBQ he has ever had outside of Mississippi (his home state). The whiskey recommendations are spot on - and the whiskey is superb. Beers are great too (expansive menu). The appetizers are a preview of whats about to come, so I say order with reckless abandon - they blew our minds. Salads, for a pork restaurant, were better than almost any restaurant Ive eaten - believe it or not. I wouldnt hesitate to go back here again. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this to everyone I know. And, I know we are always going to take friends & family here when they come into town. Oh! Kid friendly too. The kids menu/food is just as good as the adult fare.

So we drove many times by this place and never thought of going in until one of the parents from our son’s school mentioned they had great food. We were getting tired of the same ol same ol… For our son’s 11th birthday we decided to give it a try and oh lord I’m glad we did! The food was delicious! We had about 3 appetizers and my husband and I ordered maple ribs for dinner. I was beyond stuff from the appetizers that I decided to take a container to go. My son had some sort of waffle grill cheese with bacon which was delicious because I took a bite. Hehehe The atmosphere was pretty cool too. Very hipster like and trendy but not over the top. We were skeptical about bringing our 2 year old daughter but they were totally cool with her, crayons and corn bread kept her busy and full… Lol We will definitely be going back

Looking at the other reviews, maybe i went on a bad night. It took an hour and a half to receive our food and that was only after expressing our displeasure at the service. Our waitress barely came by and it took other workers there just to provide us more water. Food wise, my meal was fine but two of my friends ordered the Saturday night special, which was Prime Rib. They both came in under cooked and tasted like butane, as did the ribs. When the meal was about over and we were still supposed to receive a dessert, the waitress was surprised when we told her it had still not been brought out. Overall a very poor experience and I will not be returning.

This place hits the nail on the head (no pun intended) The craft beer selection is excellent (we had fuzzy baby ducks - NE Brewery), the decor is very warm and inviting (not kitchy, which i hate) and the food was fantastic! I have not had a fried chicken that good in my whole life. It had a perfectly crispy outside with a moist and delicious inside and I loved the honey sauce served with it. Our server was kind and knowledgeable and seemed to really enjoy the restaurant. It is always a good sign if the server of the restaurant is enthusiastic about the place where they work. We definitely will be back.
