It’s so hard for me to believe this place has such high reviews. The only time Ive had more inedible food was at Casa Bonita, but at least they have cliff divers. We were seated quickly, but then waited more than 15 minutes for water, promised to us the moment we sat down. We sat with our menus closed for a very long time before the waitress came by to take our order. I ordered the Blackened Chicken Quesadillas from their ‘Specialties’ section. Apparently, they have absolutely no clue what blackened chicken is, there were huge slices of unripe tomatoes on it and what appeared to be a slice of American cheese. It was horrible!! My granddaughter ordered a grilled cheese sandwich from the kids menu. The sandwich was quite basic, bordering on sub-par, but I will say the fries that came with it were pretty good. The fries were by far the only good thing of this entire experience. I always carry plenty of cash, so the no credit card policy wasn’t an issue, but I did have to wonder why they don’t take credit cards. My first thought was that the owner is in such poor standing with credit card processing companies that he/she can’t even get a contract with any of them. Maybe it’s because they make so much money on the on-premises ATM machine. Aren’t they nice to provide that service to you? In summary, terrible food, terrible service and terrible policy. I was recently at Murphy’s in the same strip mall. There, I had fantastic food and service. RUN, don’t walk across the parking lot to a restaurant that actually cares about their patrons.

This is one of my favorite places in Boulder the food is O.K it has always been well cooked and of good quality the menu is a bit small but it is good, mostly burgers and sandwich type food. The beer is very good especially the Pale ales the stouts and porters are a bit bland but the Pales are spectacular. They always have a very good selection of beer usually about 10 different ones or more. The service is always good, the wait staff is friendly and nice which is kind of rare sometimes in Boulder. They have a communal system where everyone takes turns with all the jobs so one day someone will wait tables and the next day the will cook in the kitchen and they all pool the tips together and split them at the end of the day. The communal work system must work well because a lot of the same people have been working there for a while and they seem happy. The only draw back I find about the Southern Sun is most times at peak hours there is a 30-45 min wait. But if you’re not starving and in a big hurry the area is not a bad place to kill 45 minutes. I like the southern Sun a lot it is a very nice difference from a lot of the franchised chain restaurants. They atmosphere is laid back and friendly, and nice place to have a meal or hangout and drink a beer. The food is not spectacular but good average restaurant/Pub food.

The Southern Sun is always my go to place for inexpensive delicious food and even more importantly, some of the best beer around. They typically have around 10-15 beers on tap, and they are all top quality. Their FY IPA is one of my favorite beers out there, and Im a big IPA fan. Hop Vivant is amazing. They keep things interesting throughout the year by throwing in some one-offs every once in a while too. Sure, the wait is long most nights, but they give you free fries to munch on (best fries Ive ever eaten) and you can sit down and sip on one of their delicious brews while you wait. The food is generally pub fare, but of a higher caliber than most. I can eat one of their burgers and a heaping portion of fries and still leave feeling great. Their food doesnt weigh me down like other brewery food can. For those naysayers out there, Im not sure what you expect. My wife and I go there a lot and typically spend no more than $35 for us both to have dinner and a few beers and have always had a great experience. If you dont like the service or the atmosphere than there are plenty of places that charge twice as much with far inferior beer and food that you can go to and get a seat right away.

The owner was confrontational with my 5-yr-old child and made her cry. Ive never been so upset with a dining experience in my life and we eat out as a happy family all the time! When we addressed the issue with the owner, he was unconcerned and completely dismissive. On another note, they dont take credit cards. This is not a mom-and-pop gelato stand in Italy!!!!! Its an American brewery and we thought the policy absurd. Its an inconvenience to customers and its obvious this place does not put them first. In todays world, that is a cost of a restaurant doing business. With my normally happy-go-lucky daughter distraught and in tears, I had absolutely no qualms about leaving w/o paying our bill. Have never done that before. I will say that with the exception of the awful owner, the rest of the staff was fine and their beers were good. But many places around here have great beer, much better ambiance and vibe, and are owned by decent people who know how to treat customers. I love craft beers and dining at local CO places, we do it all the time, but I will never give a cent to Southern Sun or its affiliations.

Easily one of my top 5 favorite places to dine in the world ... yes, the world. Every February the Southern Sun and its other Mountain Sun related affiliates host "Stout Month" ... an entire month dedicated to creative, mouth watering, out of this world stouts. Dont let that deter you as they still offer their flagship beers (I personally recommend the Java Porter or FYIPA). Stout month has something for every beer lover with hardy stouts for those who drink nothing but stout as well as crowd favorites like the Chai Stout, Girl Scout Stout (yes, it tastes like liquid thin mints), and other stouts for those who save their stout intake to Stout Month only. On top of being a world class brewery, their kitchen is in a league of its own. My personal favorite is the basil blue cheeseburger, but Ive come to learn that there isnt a bad pick on the menu. Ive been known to crave everything from their nachos to their salads and often opt to try something from the daily specials list (yes, I do frequent this establishment quite often).

The beer is good and the food OK. Id give it 4 stars for beer and 2 stars for food. The problem is that they use a cash only system thats quite unprofessional. The entire system is handwritten. Ive gone there often with a large group. They wont do individual tickets. They say they will, but they wont. More than one server has access to the same order tickets. Ive experienced more that once that a server put things on the order ticket that we didnt order or that wasnt for our table. If someone in the group pays their share and leaves, the bill often doesnt get credited. Ive personally experienced that three times. They take these handwritten tickets to the front when you ask to close your bill, and someone adds them up. They write the total on the ticket, and sorting it out is a major hassle - if not impossible. You get no itemized purchase receipt. All you get is handwritten scribble on an order ticket, with a handwritten total on it. Im surprised that they have gotten away with this system, as objectively its a mess.
