This is a style of Japanese cooking that you dont see to often in the US. The last time I had Yoshoku style food was in Tokyo and if you are craving or have never tried this before some I would definitely come here. Usagi serves western-style Japanese food that is pretty delicious and awesome comfort food. They have a great selection of tapas but I would skip the sashimi and go straight for their more unique dishes. Highly recommend the Uni Risotto (make sure you like the taste of uni first!), the Spicy Cod Roe Pasta, Chicken Croquette, and the Omu Rice. The gratin is a bit too heavy for me but my boyfriend loved what the ordered. I didnt get a chance to try the hamburger steak but I am sure we will be back soon. Parking is difficult here so Id recommend looking in the parking structure about a block or two away and just walking over. The space is small so expect a wait if you come here during peak dinner hours.

While there are plenty of sushi restaurants, ramen shops, and izakayas out there, one thing that has been noticeably lacking is the availability of Japanese restaurants serving home style food. Usagi fills that niche brilliantly, offering a variety of hamburgs, rice omelettes, and curries that are a staple of Japanese home cooking. The food is expertly prepared and portions are filling. The restaurant is quite small, and decor, while minimal all feels quite appropriate, thoughtful, and orderly. The restaurant staff isnt very large, so service may be a bit slower than youre used to, but its not enough of an issue to counterbalance the comfort and tastiness of the food.

Japanese comfort food at its finest! They serve appetizers, entrees such as steak, hamburger, omelet rice, desserts and drinks! My friend and I order the daikon ponzu sauce hamburger which came with carrots, broccoli, steak fries and she added on a fried crab cream cheese stick which also came with rice. She hardly ate the rice but she thoroughly enjoyed the hamburger. The sauce was refreshing and light. I ordered the omelet rice with hayashi sauce (beef sauce with onions and mushrooms) and added a crab cream cheese stick. That stick is delicious and cheesy! Come here for comfort food, space is limited but service is very attentive!

I really like this place. I like that it is off the main drag of San Mateo downtown (across the train tracks). But you can still park in San Mateo lots and walk there, or walk from Caltrain. They really do mostly japanese curry and streak, not a sushi focus, so look for comfort food. Steak and chips are wonderful. It is very cosy, and small. You are close to other tables.

Tiny little Japanese place known for their curries. Ive tried the katsu omelette curry and the hamburger steak, and both are delicious. Most entrees come with a miso soup or salad. Although the service is a little slow, the food is reasonably priced and very filling. They have a wide variety of meats and dishes to get (most feature some kind of curry though).

Found this place randomly when I was trying to go to kokko actually. The food here is somewhat unique being sort of Japanese cafe style food. I had the roe pasta and the omurice and both were excellent. I also had a parfait. I think this is a great hidden gem and I would say you should stop by at least once to try it.

Not your typical Japanese restaurant. Usagi offers some unique dishes that I have not seen outside of Japan. Their menu includes a mixtures of curry dishes, hamburger steaks, rabbit (true to their name), and Italian/Japanese hybrid pastas. The food was both flavorful and memorable.

If you like Japanese Western food then stop on by here. Theyve got hamburger steak, curry, and spaghetti dishes. Who knew spicy cod roe in spaghetti or hamburger with curry and rice would be good? Well it is classic Japanese home cooking now so give it a try.

Have been trying new restaurants rather than going to the same old ones and have to say the food in this restaurant was really good. Its a small restaurant slightly off downtown San Mateo with amazing food. I will be going back :)

This place has cute dishes and its fairly standard Japanese cafe faire. Its pretty tasty but its hard for me to say its special. The specialness of the place comes from the cute atmosphere and the desserts. Good date place. I

One of the few places where you can get Hamburg steak and hayashi rice. Their quality has gone down a bit over the years, but the servers are always nice, and the food is still tasty enough, so I keep coming back anyway.

Generally reliable curry and hamburger steak dishes. Other dishes are less consistent. Got luke warm soup a couple times. One of those places where you just stick with the few basic dishes and you cant go too wrong.

Awesome omelette rice, hamburger rice, curries and italian dishes with a japanese flair they mostly add fish roe to the sauce. If you like japanese homestyle restaurants you wont be disapointed.

The pork cutlet I had wasnt as juicy as I think it should be. The lunch portion is big at decent price. There are many other interesting dishes on the menu that I will give this another try.

Pretty good Japanese curry place. I tried the chicken curry plate. Nothing to complain about in terms of the taste of the meal. Just wished there was a little bit more fried chicken pieces.

Pretty decent sushi and hamburger steak, but the fries were bad (uncooked centers!) and the omurice omelette was too soft (I dont know if it is supposed to be that way).

This place offers a great Japanese style western food at a very reasonable price. Their quality of the food is good and the service is also good even for dining alone.

Decent Japanese Western food. I like their curry omelet ebi rice! Their matcha parfait though tasty is really just vanilla ice cream with matcha syrup.

Small little restaurant, cafe style. Serves Japanese-style Western food. Recommended dishes: Omurice with hayashi sauce or the Curry with pork cutlet.

Love their menu since its hard to find that kind of Japanese food in the bay area. Atmosphere is nice too but food surprisingly is just average.
