This place does Japanese food right. I rarely find a place that can do sashimi and tapas like dishes well. This place does both ! The sashimi here is incredibly fresh and pleasant on the palate - the sashimi dinner is the way to go. Its enough to share with another person, and comes with things like white tuna thats lightly seared, fresh hamachi and tuna, salmon, and red snapper. My friend liked her uni, and I really liked the tamago (large beautifully layered pieces with just the right amount of sweet). The futomaki is giant, but the pickled carrot in it left a very odd aftertaste. As for the appetizers, the buta kimchee is delicious (not too spicy), the beef tongue is tender, the beef tataki is delicately sliced and gorgeously pink, the grilled peppers are not particularly spicy but have a nice smoky flavor, and the chicken karage is great to pop in your mouth. Finish your meal with green tea ice cream and azuki (red bean) and youve got a four star meal.

My favorite under-the-radar Japanese place. It isnt as crowded and busy as other Japanese places, especially those in the more popular downtown areas. Its Los Altos, after all, the city that always sleeps. You may have to wait on occasion, but typically it hasnt been much of a problem for me. Akane used to be Japanese-owned, but I dont know if it is anymore. It still retains its simple, homey feel, capped by the sushi bar that is festooned with square, bamboo sake cups. The service is good, but most (if not all) of the servers are not Japanese. Theyre generally very good about accommodating your preferences, and are definitely nice enough. But I wouldnt say service is "excellent". The sushi is great, because the fish is always fresh. The cooked dishes are good as well, and I recommend trying some of the small appetizers or side dishes.

I thought this place was okay in terms of food and service. The service was not stellar - they let our water glasses get empty multiple times and then we had to ask different waiters going by to get more water. The food was okay, but pricey! I would recommend Sumo Sushi which is just a few blocks away. They have better sushi, better service, and more parking! Plus they have a sushi boat which is great when you just want to sit down and eat sushi and not just wait for the order.

I really like the sushi here. The fish is always fresh. The best place is to sit at the sushi bar. The Japanese entrees are ok. I dont think it is that spectacular. So if you dont want to have sushi, this is not the place to go cuz it can be pretty expensive. Service is a hit or miss. If they are busy, then they really very slow. I dont think they are capable of handle full house. So if there are people waiting outside, my suggestion is to move to other place.

I have been going to Akane for over 15 years and the proprietor is always friendly and helpful. The food is consistently good. However in the past few years the overall service from the servers themselves is unfriendly and unhelpful. My family and I feel as if as if they wish you and they were not there. It makes no difference whether the restaurant is busy or not. It has become a chilling service experience but we tend to hang in there because the food is good.

Excellent raw fish, ask for the chefs choice. You always get whats freshest and great combination of sashimi, sushi, etc. I particularly love the tai sushi with salt on top and sisho (?) leaf in between fish and rice. Other favorites that I order include the tartare and the miso sea bass from the appetizer menu. I love sushi, sashimi and have eaten at most of the usual places in the area, and I would rate Akane the highest for consistent quality AND value.

Be careful of this ridiculous place. They set a minimum of $25 for each credit card. We were not informed when we came into the restaurant or anytime during the dinner until the check time. The food here can only have 3 stars (I was surprised by the 4.2 average rate here). The service is negative. Kept asking if we had finished during the dinner. There are numerous Japanese restaurants far better than this one.

Wonderful sushi. They have real, fresh wasabi. Delicious. We usually have an assortment of food and have never been disappointed. The only time was when we had to wait an hour for a table... no more, we only come here with a reservation from now on. We love it! Stay away it is hard enough to get a table as it is.

Been coming here for a few years now. We love it! The sushi is always amazing! It is worth the price, and not that expensive when talking about sushi. We rarely try anything but the sushi and sashimi, but when we do it has always been good. We love to take our friends and family here.

Came here on a Friday night. Luckily I made reservations before I came, otherwise I wouldve had to wait for at least 20-30 minutes. The oysters were okay, not as fresh as I had hoped. I had their assorted nigiri and I would say the quality of the fish was okay.

The restaurant is quite pricey, however, the quality of the sushi is like no other in the area. They have one of the larger menus in the area. The calamari is fairly delicious. Their icura is also fresh, which is a good sign of the restaurants quality.

Tip: Authentic sushi-ya located in the sleepy town of Los Altos. Order from a broad assortment of Nigiri (check the white board special) as well as cooked dishes, such as chawanmushi or Udon. For lunch, the Chirashi ($24) is a solid choice.

Have been here many times over the years and liked some of the dishes, such as Akane II rolls, tombo tataki, hamachi mama. However, I think over all it has not improved over time, rather it has gone backwards a few steps.

Anand has consistently been one of the best sushi restaurants in the bay area for decades. In addition to sushi, their non-sushi offerings are delicious. Their Hirekatsu (especially good Tonkatsu) is one of my favorites.

I ordered the shrimp tempura lunch. It included two half pieces of shrimp then later they bring out another half piece of shrimp. My wifes order never even arrived. The uni was really good but not worth $10.

Awesome food here! The service could be a bit quicker but the food more than made up for it. Had spicy scallop roll, dragon roll, and salmon tartare. Overall very solid Japanese food.

This is the best sushi that I have ever found in the South Bay. It has consistently been the best for years, and I have been looking to find better but without result.

One of my favorite Japans restaurants in the peninsula, fresh fish is never a problem. Operation hours are status quo for sushi restaurants (closed far too frequently).

The Best. Dont waste your time at Mikado.. You might need to call ahead or be prepared to wait, but never more than 15 minutes.. at least not in the last 5 years!
