If you found this place through yelp and read the reviews... let it be known that you should sign in on their list on the right side when you enter the restaurant. I came here with le boyfriend a few weeks ago because we were looking for japanese bentos for lunch. Just looked at pictures and didnt read any reviews.. When we arrived, we walked straight down the little corridor leading into their dining area. We were politely greeted near the register and asked to go back and sign in at the door. On our trek back we noticed a sign in the corridor and posted around the entrance to kindly put your name down and wait to be seated. Felt a little bad but we were hungry and excited, thus oblivious and had tunnel vision to all these messages.. But now we know and did so for our next and future visits. :) Ive only been here twice so far for lunch and both experiences have been great! Ordered the lunch Bento Combo C~ with spicy teriyaki. Mind you, that the regular teriyaki and spicy teriyaki are different sauces completely. The spicy teriyaki is garlicky-sweet-spicy, but not really spicy. I also really appreciate that the miso soup always comes out piping hot and its one of the best miso soups Ive had. Overall bentos here are pretty on point, fulfilling with great lunch prices. I dont remember what the prices for the bentos were exactly, I think $11-$14? Dont remember. Ill snap a picture next time. But two bentos, a fountain drink, with tax and tip, we paid $32. The employees are really nice and attentive as well.

In A Nutshell: -Wanted to stop by Minato b/c one of my favorite people in the world - Mr. Anthony Bourdain recently filmed an episode of "Parts Unknown" featuring SJ Japantown. -Come early (11:30am when it opens), so you dont have to wait in a long line. -The shop owner was super cool and showed us pictures of him and his family when Anthony Bourdain was there on his cellphone. -The tempura had great presentation and the fried pieces were to die for! Temperature was spot-on and the crispiness was perfect. -The "World Famous" spare ribs looked plain, but dont let the appearance fool you. OMG - the taste and tenderness is what makes these famous. -If youre lucky (w/ it being available), ask for the Hamachi Collar. Can you believe you get two large pieces for only $10.99? Whoa, thats a steal and a half. The tuna was so tasty, crispy and moist. This alone will make me come back for more. Overall, the service was spectacular and the location feels just warm and accepting. Its reciprocal of the best Japanese restaurants youd find while traveling in Tokyo!

We absolutely LOVED Minato! It is a family-owned restaurant which is authentic, cozy, and delicious. You know when it’s a great restaurant when you see other Japanese people eating there too. We ordered the lunch bento and they were kind enough to change it so we could get the combination we wanted, which was katsu, gyoza, and tempura. The sushi was authentic, fresh, and well –made. The service was professional, friendly, and helpful as even the manager came by a few times to check on us. Our server was very forthcoming in making sure we knew we needed to pay the meter for parking. The location is right in the heart of Japan town surrounded by numerous Japanese stores including one of our favorites-Nijiya Market. We heard that the Japan Town in San Jose was bigger and better than in San Francisco and we were not disappointed. We enjoyed crepes for dessert at Banana Crepe, which was just down the street from Minato. We are definitely coming back here next time we are in San Jose!

This is the best restaurant.I have ever been to.I wish I wrote this review right after my experience about 5 years ago so I could explain the magical experience in detail. But the main point to get from this, is that it will be the best restaurant you ever go to nothing lives up to this place. Every moment was a dream come true. And the fact that I am still salivating over this experience should say enough!!

Food was quite good. Servers were nice and attentive. We neither felt rushed nor ignored. Everything that we got was nice but I wished that there had been a few other sushi roll options. We searched this place out for sushi and were surprised to see only 8 types on the menu. But quality over quantity, it was good. Particularly great was the unagi sushi roll. Bonus: the kids meal came with a toy.

Its not a sushi place IMO, and that isnt necessarily a bad thing. Originally came here looking to have some sushi on a Friday night, and was surprised/disappointed in what i saw on the menu in that regard. That said, the spicy chicken dish was great, as was the salad and miso soup, so i left quite happy regardless.

Im giving it a 5 not because its a perfect place, but because I think it deserves something between 4 and 5 a little higher than its current rating. Really good sashimi! Make sure you dont miss it. Reasonably priced Japanese food for not a long wait, one of the better places in Japan town.

I love this restaurant - my family has been coming here since I was still an egg. Theyre super generous with their cuts of sashimi and the fish is really fresh. The sashimi lunch set or combo lunch boxes are both solid. For salmon lovers, unfortunately they only have hamachi and tuna.

Minato has been my familys choice for japanese food for more than 20 years now. Their salad dressing is the perfect complement to everything on the menu. Nothing on the dinner menu is even close to bad, but the unagi don and chicken chosenyaki (in the bento) are my personal favorites.

Food is all great but I suggest the dinner or lunch box so you can try 5 different things for a great value. My favorites are also the katsudon, udon, and sukiyaki. They dont have a lot of rolls or sashimi variety but the fish that they do serve is really fresh.

Love this place! It has all of my favorite comfort foods. Its all authentic Japanese food. Very little sushi options. Get there famous Minato roll with the tekka roll or spicy tuna roll because theyre soo good! To me, the best Japanese restaurant in San Jose!

Minato, is my favorite Japanese Restaurant in Santa Clara County. The food is great, the service is impeccable and the prices very reasonable. Gino the owner makes sure that everything is alright. Should not be missed if you are in Santa Clara County.

I have been coming here for years and its always been a very pleasant experience. Although their specialty is not the sushi itself, the rest of the menu more than makes up for it in flavor and quality. Good family dining environment!

My wife and I had great teriyaki dinners and tempura from here. Excellent food and they have a card where if you buy 10 entrees, you get a free dinner box! Definitely will be going back and recommending to friends.

Good food for a decent price. The miso soup was great and the tofu was really good. The beef teriyaki was ok but not extraordinary. I would recommend going with the udon or something else as the udon was amazing!

I dont care what anyone says this is the best sushi place ever! Order the minato roll and you will know what I am talking about! I have been eating there for more than 5 years and it is still great!
