So.... I read all the reviews about Sushi Restaurants in Sacramento and decided to take a chance on Kru. Ive been eating sushi for the last 50 years of my life so I consider myself a bit if an expert on it. Ive visited Japan frequently over that time and have truly enjoyed the delights of the true professional sushi artists. Nigiri sushi is my extra special treat and its what I order, period. No rolls, no soup, no Gyoza. Im sad to report that my experience this evening was the absolute worst sushi dining experience in all those years. The guy behind the sushi bar couldnt have been more than about 25 and he didnt have a clue about creating top quality Nigiri. The fish was stale and "soft", without the nice crispness you get with really fresh fish. The Uni was served bitter, stale, and very soupy, a sign of Uni thats been in the cold case way too long. The portions were unbelievably small. Most top Nigiri restaurants give you a healthy portion per serving a bout the size of your index and middle finger combined, with a slice thats at least 1/4" thick or greater. Krus was barely the size of your little finger or smaller, sliced about 1/8" thick. It was clear that hed been told to maximize the number of servings out of a slab of fish. The selection was way sub-standard, also. They didnt have Ika(squid), Tai, and Hirame, which any quality sushi bar would unconditionally have. I also like to enjoy Hamachi Kama, the cooked cheekbone of tuna. They didnt have that either, another core staple of a good Japanese restaurant. If you are a true sushi aficionado, Id avoid this place like the plague. Additionally, going back and looking at the positive reviews... I cant believe that the folks who wrote them truly understood good sushi. Either that or the owners/relatives have been stoking the reviews themselves to draw business, as it did me.

Yay! I was able to check this restaurant off my bucket list. I went out for lunch with my hubby and son. And this was a perfect lunch date spot. They have a beautiful outside patio and when you step in youll be amazed with the beautiful high ceiling and the tree branches and setting. The tables and the decorations go well the theme. Anyways, we reached there by 11.45am but the server was a little slow so by 12.10pm I had to call her to place my order. Good thing, the food was fast in arriving to our table. But to ask her any questions or request anything else was difficult because she barely attended to our table. And I had to request her for my bill and waited for a long time when I finally decided to walk up to the front and pay. She barely paid attention to us or inquired whether we enjoyed our food, needed additional drinks, desserts or wanted to place order for anything else. She barely made an effort to smile. Overall the food experience was okay. We ordered the firecrackers sushi (nothing special) , miso soup (salty), sashmi was great, salad ( okay), lobster appetizer ( the most delicious). The bathrooms are nice and clean. They offer valet parking and they have limited parking at the back. If we go back, Ill definitely order the lobster appetizer and request a different server. And one thing I can say, the restaurant is beautiful. Overall 3.5 star experience.

The new spot that shares the (old Andiamo) building with OBO is beautiful. Chef Billy and his team did a great job in creating an inviting and lively atmosphere. The long, wood sushi bar is designed just like a high-end sushi restaurant should be. The chef stands slightly elevated in front of you and sets your sushi pieces on a ledge between you in an omakase-esque fashion (i.e. piece-by-piece). The food is as beautiful as Kru fans will remember. It is clear from the quality that Chef Billy encourages his employees to take pride in the work they do. As with all proper sushi chefs, Billy has his own way of processing his fish. Some of his combinations are bold, but all possess a good amount of finesse, a necessity of quality cuisine. The wine and bar menu is extensive, focusing on Japanese whiskies and sake. The servers are knowledgeable and willing to help with your drink selection. Expect your drinks to be crafted with as much care as the food. Service is well above average for the Sacramento area. It perhaps requires a little more work on finesse (backhanding!), but it is clear that servers are also encouraged to take pride in what they do. All-in-all, Chef Billy has once again thrown the gauntlet, Sacramento. Kru is the quality of restaurant we deserve and should be demanding!

This restaurant is a great place if you dont like any food with your meal. Kru has the most arrogant, overly (and incorrectly) lauded chef/kitchen in the business. We had to wait an hour an a half for our dinners to arrive to table. None of the plates arrived at the same time-not even close. The servings were horribly stingy, yet elaborately staged. The lamb chops were all bone and had no meat on them. The sesame chicken was a breaded and fried chicken breast with a dollop of sauce, and no sesame! Our soup was forgotten, didnt get it until the main course. A molten chocolate cake (usually a large-portioned item) looked like it had been baked in a thimble. I think the chef here is just too precious for his own good. A very arrogant, poor showing. This place gets talked up a lot as being an "in" foodie place that other chefs go to. I think all that chatter has completely gone to their heads, and they have utterly lost focus. What a hot mess! Avoid these guys like the plague.

My husband and I have been going to KRU every Friday night for date night for the past 7-8 months. The staff is so cool...the staff knows us so if any of them are reading this they probably know who we are ;-) lol I recommend the tuna tartar with the preserved wasabi, pineapple infusion cocktail, the ceviche tuna plate and the specials they have on the board behind the sushi bar! The menu has so many great things, but I have my favs. Billy (the owner) is so cool...I love how he can create awesome dishes from scratch and use us as the taste testers! I have been all over the place from Vegas, Seattle, SF, and LA looking for something comparable and it I still can not find any place that has done it for me... We always roll in here with new friends introducing them to KRU and once they are hooked, they are hooked.

Service is excellent, very friendly people. The two rolls that I got were Krazy Kali and Great White, both did not taste great at all. The flavors were not well balanced and especially for the Krazy Kali, because the rice was fried, the batter flavor was overpowering. As for one of their small plate specials, the seabass with inoki mushrooms cooked in aluminum foil, the fish was overcooked and the sauce was one dimensional. Presentation of the food could have been better. Instead of serving the fish still inside the aluminum foil, it would have looked a lot better without it. The taste would have not have changed. In spite of all this, their salmon sashimi is fresh, has some fat content in it, excellent. However, their squid sashimi does not taste how its supposed to be.
