The restaurant was half empty at 7:30, which is a bad sign. But the flowers were fresh and the tablecloths were sparkling white and the walls plastered with opera star photos were charming. The waiter was pleasant but surprisingly dressed for a restaurant that calls for business casual. He looked like he was ready to dance at a club in his white jeans and gauzy white, tight shirt. The Caesar salad came very promptly, almost immediately after ordered. But routine and uninspiring were its only other attributes worth mentioning. The cheese tortellini were piping hot and drenched in a yummy cream sauce. Fresh ground pepper was offered by the waiter and lots of grated parmesan cheese came from his colleague (another waiter? bus boy? owner? friend of the cook?) The pinot grigio was superb with the pasta. There was no offer of dessert nor coffee once the finished plate was whisked away. A bill for $29 appeared quickly. I think I could have had the same meal with a better salad at Pasta Pomodoro for less money.

The only thing better than the food at La Traviata is the service. Well, no, actually, the food tops the service. Well, okay, both are outstanding, and its worth the hour commute both directions to have a meal at La Traviata. The waiters and owner are charming, helpful with suggestions for ordering, attentive without intruding upon the dining experience. We never feel rushed, nor are we ever looking around, trying to get someones attention, feeling neglected. The food is incredible. You must try the eggplant parmagiana--its not breaded and greasy. The eggplant flavor is there, and the sauce and cheese combine with it to make it perfect. The salmon in pastry shell is fantastic, too. And dont leave without having the fig & goat cheese green salad. Normally I dont like goat cheese, but the stuff they use is mild and tasty. The ambiance at La Traviata is hushed, elegant, but not pretentious. What an outstanding dining experience. Ive been coming here for 20 years, and it just keeps getting better.

My Take: an Italian without any fuss right in the heart of the Mission Went For: Saturday dinner The Vibe: locals who want a change of flavors from the predominately Mexican and Latin American cuisine Special Dish: creamy and heavy yet delicious Pesto Gnocchi Avoid Their: lackluster Baked Salmon Price Point: most meat or cheese entrees under $20.00 while most seafood entrees under $25.00 The Service: attentive and helpful Reservations: we had a large group but it wasnt a problem on a weekend night FYI, FRIENDS: the food isnt bad, but I wish they were a little more generous with the salt. Many pasta dishes lacked a punch Eat up, Kimmie

I enjoyed our dinner here. The atmosphere is charming and old fashioned and the menu is traditional Italian food. Good wine list with modestly pricing. We had breaded fried mozzarella (tasty, not as cheesily oozing as I expected), egg drop soup (tasty, nice and hot, cant go wrong with eggs), cheese tortellini (very creamy, leftovers great for next day breakfast), pasta with prawns (pretty good, but not screaming with flavor), and profiteroles (major hit with my teenage niece). Service was fine. Id visit again, if I were in the area and craving old school Italian food.

Solid Italian food. The homemade bread is served warm with butter instead of olive oil, which I found odd at first but after tasting it, I stopped second-guessing their choice. Good bruschetta. My main was shrimp with pasta, which was good but not mind-blowing. Service was fine for us. The ambiance is dark, romantic, but weirdly and a bit uncomfortably open inside. The interior would benefit from lower lighting over the tables and maybe some low walls between booths to break up the vertical openness.

La Traviata was a terrific surprise for me and my wife. After trying to go to another restaurant in the neighborhood, which couldnt receive us as they were completely booked, we found La Traviata, whose servers kindly welcomed us (and some other guests who arrived later) even though it was close to 10PM. I had the Veal Parmigiana and my wife had the Gnocchi. My wifes (who is an Italian descendent, btw) first reaction was: "this sauce reminds my my grandmas, I loved it!". Definitely recommend the place!

La Traviata is an excellent restaurant. Its been a favorite of mine for decades. One of quietest restaurants Ive been in. The veal is the best Ive ever had--truly tender. One of my favorite dishes is the tortellini; order it with the cream sauce. Its available as a side dish with many entrees. Try the Shoeshine Petite Sirah. Comparing La Traviata to Pomodoro is a grave injustice and comparing it to Olive Garden is an insult. This restaurant is unique.

I absolutely love this Italian restaurant, its like stepping back in time with all of the amazing photos adorning the walls. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. The portions are appropriately sized per the cost, and many of the meals come with multiple courses. Some of my favorites include: caprese, tortelleni, La Triviata Chicken, and the spumoni ice cream. I definitely recommend this restaurant for its charm and incredible food!

Came here with a friend for his birthday last night. Yum yum! Authentic, classic but low-frill Italian food experience. We had something from almost every course: melon with prosciutto; greens with blue cheese and walnuts; linguine carbonara; veal parmagiana; tiramisu and decaf. The least expensive italian wines (sangiovese and pinot grigio) did the job beautifully. We had a great time and would definitely come back.q

Honestly you dont even have to order anything. Just get the bread, its amazing! I loved it so much the main course was almost a step down haha Service is really good, the staff are very friendly and entertaining. The only downside is that their kitchen is a bit small so the wait time for the food is a bit long. But overall I really liked the place. Would come back for the bread!

One of my favorite Italian restaurants in SF. The food is very authentic, full of flavor, and a great portion. The customer service is great. It was my wifes birthday, and they did an amazing birthday celebration for her. This is a great place for a date, or for the family. The food is very well priced especially for the quality. Will be back.

Consistently good traditional Italian restaurant in a warm intimate vaulted wood dining room. Photographs of great opera singers who have performed at the San Francisco Opera house cover the wall. Their veal and tortellini dishes are especially good. Very cozy warm atmosphere and the owner/hosts/waiters always make you feel welcome. A joy.

I watched The Godfather on my flight to SF, so I was craving some Italian food (as one does after watching The Godfather). My boyfriend found this place on his phone, so we popped in. I am so glad we found La Traviata--they had the best, gooiest/crispiest lasagna Ive ever had. I would give this place more stars if I could!

Incredible and authentic italian food! Got the gnocchi with creamy pesto and it was absolutely delicious. The entire place is homey and is an Italian gem found in the Mission. They bring out freshly baked bread to the table and have a very friendly atmosphere.

Just had dinner at La Traviata, and it was a very nice experience. Service was very good and the food was quite tasty too. Although La Traviata doesnt look like much from the outside, it has a wonderful charm about it that wants you to come back for more.
