Hard Knox hit the spot! Nice hot food for a rainy night. I just finished my meal and enjoyed it so much I had to come home and write my review. I had the spicy fried chicken dinner with sides of collard greens and black-eyed peas with rice. They gave one wing, one breast and one drumstick. The spiciness level was just right (they do have Crystal Sauce available if you need it). The greens were tasty and the beans and rice were nice and fragrant. The staff was extremely welcoming and courteous. They served two warm cornbread muffins to eat with my coffee while I waited for my dinner to come, which seemed like no time at all. The atmosphere is pretty fun. There was blues music playing at a decent level for a restaurant and the walls were decorated with classic American items like funny license plates, road signs and Giants baseball memorabilia. I was super satisfied with my experience and will return soon for another meal; maybe breakfast. Thank you Hard Knox Cafe!

Same price Lower standard. I came here with my cousins with high expectation according to their recomemdation for the cabbage stew which they always had it everytime they came . we doubted since first step that theres no queu and not busy as always but we undoubted when we got our cabbage stews that should change its name to Blanched cabbage. We asked the manager whom they first met about it but he refused for the uncooked cabbage as his standard. He told us in the meaning that the dishes that they had had so many many time was the very last cabbages that had left boiling for a long time and the uncooked one is the very first cabbages of the badge. How uncertainly it is? But Thanks to our waiter whose name is Don who has beautiful service mind and knows whats good for the restaurant. He made our dinner better and made us can smile in finally.

I met up with my friend for a mid week lunch. The place was pretty busy at 12:30 and we were lucky to get a table. 10 mins later and there was several people waiting. The waiter was quick to get our drink order. When my friend asked what is good he told us the top 3 choices, fried chicken, fried fish, and short ribs. Glancing around I saw a lot of brunch orders and fried chicken. I was here for the fried chicken with a side of mashed potatoes and heavy and Mac and cheese. You also get a side of corn bread muffins, but try not to fill up on them. Yes they are delicious but filling. Service is good here and the food arrives hot and pretty quick. I will be back to try the short ribs and oxtail.

The only items on the menu I would recommend are the blackened catfish and the cornbread muffins. As for everything else: fried chicken - I do know people who swear by their fried chicken, but it really does nothing for me. Both the chicken and crust are dry, imo. Fried catfish - all cornmeal - dry and grainy. Cheesesteak - do not waste your money on this. Inedible. Fries - can you really call these fries? Fairly certain they are boiled or steamed. On top of all that, the service (never their strong point) has gone downhill recently. Stuff like "oops, we forgot to make your order" and "oops, we forgot to tell you when you ordered - were out of that item".

I love this place! There arent many places in San Francisco for southern BBQ, so even if this place was only half-decent, Id still recommend it. Luckily, the food is amazing and the service is friendly. You should definitely try the fried (and spicy) chicken, pulled pork and jambalaya. The sides are also very good. There are TVs if you want to go here for the game and drinks are basically on happy hour prices all the time. Draft beers are $3.50. Food prices are also very affordable. If its not already included with your meal, make sure to order the corn muffins. They are always moist and delicious. An order of two corn muffins is only $1.

Tasty Southern food served in a throwback garage-style space reminiscent of a funkier Rubys diner, Hard Knox has catapulted itself into my heart for delivering the very best Fried Chicken and Waffles Ive had in San Francisco. In a city known for this innovative breakfast staple, Hard Knox excels with a spicy, crunchy batter the fluffiest waffle, and a perfect ratio of spicy:salty:sweet. Other dishes like the pulled pork and the collard greens were ok, but the chicken is where its at!

Good service but rather bland food. Fried chicken was crispy but deprived of essential seasonings, including salt. Snapper was dried and overcooked. Oxtail was the best entrée; however, the accompanying gravy was just a brown mess. Sides dishes of mac and cheese was not any better; the cheese sauce tasted a yellow version of the gravy. And dont bother with the slaw, it is simply shredded cabbage with a very confused dressing; neither tangy nor creamy.

Love, love, love this place! My friend and I went for lunch (for the umpteenth time) and had foodgasms galore! The fried chicken just melts in your mouth with its crunchy skin and tender juicy meaty goodness! I like to dip it in my mash potatoes before each bite! The fried chicken pot pie is HUGE and delicious! Favorite part of going to HKC is the corn muffins - you get two!!! Service is great and the music keeps your toes tapping!

One of the best soul food meals I ever had. The cornbread and greens and yams were perfect. The mac and cheese was just right, not too heavy and well balanced. Everything was well balanced. The neckbones had a deep flavor that left me wanting more. The fried chicken was perfectly crispy and moist, and with their hot sauce was as good as it gets. The prices are crazy low too. Go!Hard Knox Cafe and San Francisco Soul Food Restaurant is best.

Im not sure why theres a picture of the Empire State Building.. but okay! Good food at a good price. I love the Juicy Lucy burger.. and I do miss it now that Ive given up red meat. But the veggie burger is an alternative that satisfies the craving. I usually get it with a side of sweet potato fries. The brunch items are good too, but I would stick with their lunch/dinner options. Thats their strong suit.

I ordered the two eggs breakfast with fried catfish with sourdough bread and grits. The portions were huge! I wasnt even close to finishing my meal. It could be cause I ate two delicious cornbreads before I we got our food. The catfish was ok but I was able to try other dishes like the cajun catfish which I liked. My girlfriend had the crab cake Benedict and that was really good too.
