We went a couple of nights ago. Top Gun, filmed in 1985, is one of my favorite movies. Unfortunately, the pulled pork our entire family ordered had been warming since 1985 as well. It was so dry that no amount of sauce would help, plus it was not seasoned at all. With more and more people being food-savvy, better learn to season meat. My onion rings not only did not come out with my order but when they did come out, they were WAY over-done, nearly burned. Our server was nice on the surface, but I know barely-hidden irritation when I see it and our whole family felt it. I observed other servers not always being exceptionally friendly as well...is anyone holding them accountable for treating customers like a nuisance? Our family of five was made to sit at a dinky little table even though there were several empty tables in the room that could have been moved with 30 seconds of effort. My personal portion of pulled pork had a giant section burned beyond recognition from sitting under a warmer for hours and hours. My daughter couldnt even eat her hot dog it was so bad. Who messes up a hot dog? Somebody better to learn the basics of cooking meat or KCBBQ will not stay around much longer. How about tasting the food you are serving your come-once-and-never-again guests? Cant ride the coattails of having one movie filmed there 27 years ago much longer. Even though TOP GUN is a great gimmick for the place, great food and outstanding service will always win the day. My check was about $50, and it was so bad that only my conscious stopped me from just walking out after the meal. Even my kids said it was the worst food they had during our stay in San Diego.

Went to this establishment last night at about 8pm and they were turning people away left and right because the food would be a minimum of a 45 minute wait. Since me and the wife only wanted to drink we elected to sit and enjoy ourselves before the drunken munchies set in. We waited at our table for at least 30 minutes as we saw our waitress pass us over and over again making eye contact at us and our empty table without stopping. When she finally stopped she was short rude and had a general lack of respect for us as she cut us off every time we would speak. As the night continued we added a few more people to our party and moved to a bigger table. The level of inattentiveness only increased as we all observed her and majority of the wait staff, the bartender and a guy who appeared to be a bouncer of sorts all drinking heavily. BEWARE if you are planning on going with a group of friends they will not split the check and they will be very little help in clearing up the confusion. I watched as the bartender shoved responsibility back to our waitress who started to talk down to my wife about the whole situation. The waitress never gave us a name, otherwise her serious lack in customer service skills would be assigned to her and her alone, but she was older with short curly red hair. Overall what food we got was ok but not worth the price. The beer was mediocre. Service was terrible. Definitely not a good first impression. And I highly doubt I will ever visit this establishment in the future.

Wow. Im fully impressed with the Bar-B-Q and pricing at this dive bar style restaurant! Im originally from Texas, and it is an understatement to say we love and know good bar-b-q, and boy this is definitely the spot if your in San Diego! Of course it is not Texas style, but it is nonetheless delicious and worth every penny! We usually order the works combination plate (I think). It is the one that lets you pick three different meats and two sides. I recommend the brisket, pulled pork, and hot link for the mains and definitely try the onion rings! As for the last side, really all are good its just the slaw and Mac n cheese sides are tiny if your sharing, so you may wanna do fries with that if you wanna get stuffed! I also recommend the fried pickles and fried Mac n cheese balls, they are always fresh and delicious! If youre in the mood for something spicy the hot balls are amazing because it is basically the Mac n cheese ball sauteed in buffalo sauce. Obvs totes delish. Finally, get a pitcher of beer cause it is cheap and you can get about six mugs out of it (I would guess about 10 oz mugs). I recommend the greenflash lager if you do not like ipas, it really compliments the bar-b-q!

The only reason I gave them 1 star is that They got my soda right! This place was soo disgusting i cant Even begin to tell you! All of you people who said it was good and dont understand why people dont like it are either retards, have no taste buds or a grip on what BBQ/ or even what food is suppose to taste like! I was there with a friend and it was horrible to say the least. My onion rings were burnt and to top it off the only flavor they had was the burnt old oil taste. The mac and cheese was like eating mush, cold and no flavor and greasy as all can be. I got the chicken and the beef plate. The chicken was raw in the middle and burned on the outside, the beef was lacking ummm FLAVOR and tasteless and seemed like it was re heated OLD. Very rubbery! This place should be closed or they need to take a trip to Kansas city to taste what real bbq is suppose to be like. I have had roach coach BBQ that was way better! I would never go there again and dont recommend anyone to go there!

If you want to enjoy your dinner and company youre with, do not eat here. Im so sorry. I ordered a chicken sandwhich and the skin was a grey color and rubbery. I just cant describe it. My husbands ribs were cold. The waitress brought out an extra boat of fries for me because she said the ones that came with my food looked like the bottom of the bag. The buns were fresh out....of the bag..if thats how you like your sandwhiches at a restaurant. My thought was...pride. Why would the cook or person plating even send out that plate. Why cook if you dont have pride in the food you are serving. The location of this place is in the heart of San Diego! Maybe it was great once a long time ago but you cant drop your standards and keep serving! The point of this post is not to bash the establishment but to send a message: improve the standard of the food you are serving.

A lot of the reviews here look like theyre addressing the "BBQ" part of Kansas City BBQ. We took an out-of-town, "Top Gun" obsessed friend here and we werent disappointed. This place has been banking off "Top Gun" for decades- and good for them! We got there during their 3-6 pm happy hour, and ordered sliders and mac n cheese balls. We were all happy with what we had. Interesting fun fact: they have a Green Flash "Top Gun" ale that Ive never seen on a menu anywhere else in San Diego. We had a couple of pitchers, which were reasonably priced since it was happy hour, and were very happy soaking in the atmosphere of the "dive bar" from "Top Gun." Our server came exactly when we needed her and didnt bother us, or nudge us out the door. Its laid back, but the service isnt bad. Not somewhere Id go without tourists, but if youre there for the nostalgia, youll get it.
