You might think Sushi in Del Mar is gonna be a costly endeavor and that you might be able to save some time and money by going a little further north to Solana, Encinitas or Carlsbad and in general youd be right, but this unassuming spot barely looks like a sushi spot from the outside and actually that rusty gate from the grocery store next door probably scare people off. Its awesome to come here when its slow, you get super fast and amazing food and during daytime they have a HH thats killer on the deals. Kai roll, sushi burrito, philly. They serve a ton of regulars and most of the staff will remember you if you come in a lot. The service is great, but most of all from the chefs with their great flavor profiles, knife skills and recommendations. They have some major price jumps between standard rolls and premium as well as for their MP items like Uni, Toro, etc. The salad pricing like wakame is a bit high. If you dont mind getting certain rolls the HH can be as inexpensive as any place around, but their quality will keep you coming back regardless of the price. Found out about this place as they also own Nozomi in Carlsbad, another diamond in the rough. Urban, Balance and Flower Hill have brought a lot more attention to this side of the 5. Their salmon tends to be firm, while their tuna I found soft. They use a lot of jalapeno, cream cheese and sriracha in their rolls. They perfectly dont over fry their shrimp, the unagi sauce is a bit of an overload and really sweet. I always ask to go easy on the crunchies if any at all. I dont like the word fusion and youll see it in the rest of their menu being that its pretty limited on the back end, but the front chefs are great.

My wife and I ordered teriyaki vegetables and sushi to-go and were relatively disappointed with our meal. The service we experienced was good and we received our to-go order quickly, but the sushi just wasnt that great. The teriyaki vegetables were amazing and we really enjoyed those, but the two sushi rolls we ordered were just mediocre. Part of our issue was that the soy sauce which was served with our sushi (in little to-go packets) was incredibly salty. Disgustingly so. It completely overwhelmed the flavor of the sushi, the ginger, and the wasabi sauce. Well definitely be back for some more teriyaki vegetables and chicken, but next time well probably skip the sushi. On a side note the prices for a $$ location werent too bad. You can purchase sushi rolls there for as low as $5.50-ish (for an 8-piece roll). More expensive rolls can run up to $15 for a 10 piece roll. The excellent teriyaki vegetables were $12 for a substantial serving.

We were craving for some good Sushi and started looking for some groupon. We came here with our groupon and they received it well. The place was quite nicely decorated, very open and friendly atmosphere. Had a great friend serving our table, his name is Moe and he was very friendly and gave lot of helpful suggestions. We ordered, crunchy shrimp, California roll, chicken ramen, dumplings. Everything was edible, nothing more.

I wish I could give this place zero stars. I went here on a Monday afternoon. There was no one in the restaurant and to top it all off we waited 40 minutes for our food which never came. So we paid for our wine and left. They did not bother to refill drinks. They were not that friendly and they seemed to be inconvenienced by us asking for more water. I will never recommend this place to anyone.

By far the best experience Ive ever had at a sushi restaurant. The food is fun, very fresh and everyone who works there is in a good mood. One server in particular made me laugh so much! Her name was Drake. The interesting name followed her unique personality, great service! I love Tabu, and its very cheap for del mar.

The food tastes great, but its not the cheapest. The service is either fantastic or absolutely terrible. Just hope you get an experienced server who will make you feel welcome, and not an apathetic server doesnt seem to know or care about customer service.

Compliments to the chef - the sushi here was awesome. It may just be because sushi in the Midwest isnt this fresh, but I had no complaints about this place after a long days work. Friendly staff and very relaxing experience.
