Umami now verses Umami then... Its hard not to judge harshly when I knew how it was, and how it is now. Ill start by saying having to share space with another business is hard, but it shouldnt be an excuse for poor service. Umami used to be our favorite place for authentic Ramen, the chefs just knew how to do it right, the servers were great, and the price was reasonable. However, times are tough and they had to strike a deal with another business and share space. Now I dont see any of the old servers and I have no idea if they kept the same chefs, but the new restaurant just...lacks. The servers and bartenders just come off either overwhelmed or like they couldnt honestly give a damn; Its one or the other and never in between. This may sound harsh but this is a collective opinion after 6 or 7 different visits in the last year: Getting any drink takes 20 mins, you have to find yourself a seat even when their slammed, getting your order taken takes at least 30 mins, and getting your order taken correctly/getting the correct food is not the norm. Im not saying the Ramen now isnt amazing, its definitely worth the hassle, but be prepared/come in a laid back mood and just let stuff slide. If the chefs are on their game it will be worth it (Even though its more expensive now).

Easy to miss, but worth finding! Went there on the 4th of July 2017. A couple friends and I stopped by for lunch. Chris was our server - he was very easy going and fielded a lot of questions from my friends whose only experience with ramen was the stuff in a cup. One of my friends cant have pork and the other cant eat spicy food, both found a Ramen they could eat. They have a "mix and match" approach; choose the kind of meat, broth and a few other options that sound good and you are on your way to a tasty meal. Overall Id say they strike a good balance between traditional and American style ramen. Ive been to 4 restaurants in the valley and Id say they were the best primarily because of the quality of the meat. Out the back there is a decent sized patio with a ping pong table and a small stage where they host open mic nights and that sort of thing. I believe Chris said theyre closing for a remodel during the summer of 17 so be sure to call first.

Umami has reopened at Shady park and now its not just Ramen. I go specifically for the variety of Ramen available, its well prepared and you can add a lot of extras. Now Umami has a pizza option and a bar for those looking for a great night experience. I believe they have combined with the pizza restaurant already in this spot, but the food is still amazing. The service was excellent and the ambiance is great. I also believe they cook the pizza and ramen in separate areas, which is a huge plus. If you enjoy ramen, want some pizza, or bar food this place has it all. Highly recommended.

Ive been trying to visit this place for a while. Its very close to ASU and the place looks clean and cozy. Finally had chance to visit on Saturday afternoon around 1:30pm. There is only few tables were taken. The menu can not be easier. Simply picked few items and you are done. There are only two things that I cant give them 5 stars. 1. The miso soup is way tooooooo salty and the soup isnt hot at all. 2. The parking is really pain.

I was tempted to try this place because I could customize the dish and choose the type of broth. I ordered the sea salt broth and added spam, corn, and an egg. The flavor and quality of the raen was quite good. It was a little less authentic/ethnic tasting than some Ive had but I believe that also makes it more appealing and accessible to mainstream tastes.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I had lunch here this week and the service, food and atmosphere were impeccable. I built my own bowl with the spiciest and most flavorful broth and it was the best ramen of my life. The noodles were plentiful, the broth magnificent and even my vegan friend was pleased as punch with the vegan ramen bowl. Go! Now!

So, being Japanese, its hard to find authentic food out here. But Jared trained in Japan, and for people who complain about authentic flavor, theres only so much he is allowed to do with FDA rules, but this is the best Ive had in America. Whenever Im homesick, outside of sushi, this is my first stop.

Loved the Ramen and all the choices that you could have. Not a big fan of the loud TV but the food made up for it. Great prices too. Definitely going to go again. Its in Shady Park, if youre having problems finding it. Ramen, pizza, bar food and alcohol all in one place!

Absolutely love this spot. The Mr. Roboto special with a Lucky Buddha (plus sake!) and Spicy Shoyu ramen bowl for just $10 is a steal. I might go as far as to say its the best destination on Mill when it comes to a quality, fulfilling, and affordable meal.

Best ramen in Tempe. Great options, and clear love for details and high quality. Recommend if youre looking for a very satisfying bowl of ramen. Also has great bentos if youre not as hungry, such as daily seaweed rolls, squid salad, or seaweed salad.

This place is definitely a great place for ramen, way better than any other place weve been to. Service was fast and friendly even when they started to get busy. Highly recommended

The service was great, but its some of the worst ramen Ive ever had. It was so salty that I couldnt enjoy it. My gfs ramen had little flavor. Skip this place and try another.

Good food but a slightly misleading menu. This restaurant is going to close by the 10th of December 2016 or when they run out of food until they find a new location.

Good atmosphere, good food and good service. My girl and I both had the Miso base with different fixings and we both enjoyed our meal. Well be going back for sure.

Great ramen that will fill you up. Creative and varying choices. Basic college bar vibe with plenty of patio space. And apparently hires beautiful peoples.

Definitely not the same ramen as it was before. Not as much flavor in the broth, a little disappointed as I used to love the old location and food before.

Came in for Ramen but it is only served 11-3. Wish I wouldve known that before coming in. Cant really rate this place otherwise. Server was nice!
