I was in Phoenix on Christmas Day, and stopped at Shangri-La for a take-out dinner. The food was pretty good, no complaints there, but the lack of professionalism that I witnessed in the restaurant was pretty much unimaginable. I saw a customer (apparently a repeat customer) get berated and purposely embarrassed by the staff of the restaurant, when he raised what appeared to be a reasonable concern. Here are the details of what I witnessed: The restaurant was fairly crowded, being one of the few local dining spots open on Christmas. They had a policy that they added an 18% gratuity to your check for larger parties (pretty standard). After one large party finished their meal, a man from the table brought the check to the front desk. He said that while he understood the policy, he calmly explained that he did not feel that an 18% tip was appropriate due to the poor service the group received. He detailed how a dish was brought to the table covered in sauce or juice, which spilled all over one of his family members, and the wait staff would not even offer to help. In addition, he said that multiple dishes and cups were dirty. While I cant validate the truth of this, I would expect the manager to at least be apologetic. That certainly wasnt the case. The manager (or at least, the woman acting as the restaurant manager), basically said, "so one server wasnt good, and you want to punish all of us?? On Christmas???" All of this was loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear. I think all the man really wanted was an apology, but then it turned even worse. He was more frustrated and said that he thought the service was simply unacceptable. The manager then started yelling at the man, telling him he was cheap and just didnt want to give a tip. She started clapping and yelling "you cheap" at him and getting the rest of the restaurant staff and even other customers to clap and yell at the man as well. She finally told him that he shouldnt come back (not that there was any chance that he would anyway). It was absurd. In all, I was saddened and disappointed that I gave this restaurant my business. If I had not already paid for my meal, I would have simply walked out (something tells me they wouldnt have given me a refund if I asked). I would strongly recommend NOT giving this restaurant any business, just based on the way I saw them treat a repeat customer on Christmas.

Absolutely Horrible! Had a birthday party there w/ 30+ people. The manager set up 4 tables that sat 4 people each. Does that math add up? I told the manager that we needed more tables & she said that 4 tables is all she could spare for our party. We were the only people in the whole restaurant! Me & 2 other people in my party had to grab 6 other tables from the other dining areas & re set up the tables where we were so we could all sit down. While we were doing this the manager was hollering at us that "we cant put tables together like that". If we wanted drinks(Including soda! Basically anything besides water.) we had to go to the "Bar" area & get them ourselves. From the time I placed my order(I timed it) it took 25 minutes to get my food. No rice included. I had to let the manager know that I wanted rice also. A minute or 2 later I received my white rice. When I received the bill it included a 20%+ tip. Never anywhere, any time were we ever informed that there would be a tip included in the bill, let alone a 20%+ tip. When I confronted the manager she argued with me & told me that, "We include the tip because of people like you!" The Manager was rude, disrespectful, & downright terrible. The service was sub par. The food was below average & extremely overpriced. Neither me or anyone in my party was happy about this restaurant & we will make sure to tell everyone we know to avoid Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant.

Love this place, I have been coming here for years and the food is just as good as day 1 and the staff is always friendly! Update: Most recent visit was yesterday afternoon and the food was great as usual however the service and billing was horrible. I took my girlfriend, a friend and 4 kids of which 3 were under 5. They counted us as a party of 7 and charged the mandatory large group gratuity as part of the bill, well our friend went without a drink for 20 minutes, and they refilled one of the kids drinks with iced tea and it was Dr. Pepper, I had to get up 4 times, to request the refills, ask for hot mustard, and a couple other reasons. When the food came out some of my girlfriends dish was spilled on the floor and the plate was still placed in front of her, no new plate, no apologies and no offers considering some was just spilled by the wait staff, and then the bus boy swept it into a pile and left it and I could clearly hear him say he didnt spill it and therefore was not going to finish cleaning it up! So all told 5 main dishes, 2 orders of cream cheese puffs, 3 egg rolls, and 1 order of beef skewers and 6 drinks came to $123.99 of which only $81.00 was food the rest was drink and forced gratuity for bad service. I am not happy and feel like I was ripped off!

OUTSTANDING!!! Honestly, this place has the best food Ive had outside of Chinatown in L.A. My wife, daughter and I went in yesterday, and had an amazing meal! Everything tasted fresh, piping hot, and very delicious! Their egg rolls were fantastic, crispy and flavorful. The shrimp in the "Crystal Shrimp" were plump and soft, and the vegetables tasted like they were grown in the back room... FRESH! The beef in the "Orange Beef" was tender and cooked to perfection, and the chicken in my daughters "Sesame Chicken" was all white meat, tender, and juicy. I ordered "Mongolian Beef" to go after our meal, and was again blown away by the exceptional taste and tenderness of the meat. My only complaint is the portion size for the to go order. The little white paper box wasnt filled to the top like Im used to from everywhere else Ive been, but I will accept the smaller portion size from the overall experience. The decor is typical for Americanized Chinese restaurants, and the service was great! I will definitely be going back soon! I have been frequenting another place for nearly the last 20 years, and as a result of my experience here at Shangri La, I have almost forgotten the name of the other place. ;) Over all: 9/10

Took a group of seniors for lunch today, what an experience. The manager was loud, rude and very unprofessional. A couple of customers complained about not being served in a timely manner and she told them they could leave if they wanted, when they choose to leave, she said out loud "Jesus, I swear, Jesus, I cant believe some people. The manager kept complaining how busy she was, which in her mind made it OK to be rude to the customers. The group I was with, couldnt believe how rude she was and ask that we never come here again. When we were paying our tab, the manage gave one of the ladies, wrong changes, then wanted to argue about .75 cents. While we were checking out, there were a couple waiting for a to go order and was trying to ask the manager about the history of the restaurant. The manager told them she was very busy and didnt have time to talk about the history of the restaurant. Those customer also left without getting their food. Needless to say our lunch experience today was less than desirable. I think the manager needs a lesson on customer service. You cant be rude to people and justify it because your busy. Just saying.....
