I have been back to the North Star American Bistro four times. Each time I am hoping for a better experience. Sadly it seems each time there is always one or more short comings that you would not expect. It is like a student that is capable of an A grade but for some reason cannot achieve any higher than a C. I will start with the things that are constant yet very weird and annoying. There is a bread person walking around whose job it seems is to make you feel special because you received a single thin slice of bread. Should I ask for more bread? Give me a break, provide a table basket with variety and be done with it. Then there is an individual who walks (does laps) around the restaurant not providing eye contact with any customers. Are the employees told to look busy? My last visit was the evening of 2/14/13. The restaurant was busy and we had a waiter who could not seem to get things right for us. Wrong drink ect. Then all of a sudden he was gone (MIA) and someone else shows up, to whom I re-stated my previous requests. It really seems beyond employee training this restaurant should really get a grasp of hospitality. This is one of few restaurants that accepts reservations. I have arrived (dined) with and without reservations. The food is a pleasant surprise in variety and taste. Portions average to small. Good bar atmosphere. Happy hour I believe yet have not attended. The bottom line is if I return, it would be for the food.

We have eaten here before and found food reasonable. For fathers day I ordered chicken and waffles to try something new. The meal was way below expectations for this restaurant - dried out chicken bits and tiny dry toaster waffles - tasteless. Should have turned the meal back but didnt want to ruin our fathers day meal. Should be taken off menu. Break fast skillet seemed a better choice if I dare return. My overall impression is that the quality has changed.

went there for sunday brunch, which is served just on sunday at this location. very awkward service, interior looks like its from an airport terminal, bad coffee (though alterra is on the corner?), food tastes a day old (but they only serve brunch on sunday?) and like it definitely started like in a freezer. pretty sure they threw in brunch on a whim to sucker people into spending money there when the restaurant would otherwise be closed.

Toys in kids are completely busted and/or totally grimy. Asked about chalk, waitress said look in the toys- none. Food is pretty tasty for price, but expect $100+ for 4 people. Lastly, atmosphere- sign on door to mens bathroom said, "Mr. Plumber, urinal will not flush, and second stall leaking.." A handle was busted off one of the sinks. Not something you see at a place that is $100 for 4.

I like it! Cant give 5 because I didnt actually eat here but from the crowd at lunch Id say its hot. Im at the bar while the husband is in surgery down the road at UCSF Mission Bay. So I needed a bloody and they delivered. Its packed but theres room at the bar for one. Friendly bartenders. Good drink. Clean. Light. Good vibe. Ill be back!

They dont offer much by way of vegetarian food, but you can order plates without meat on it and hope it is not made with chicken stock.My butternut squash ravioli without the scallops was average, although the white sauce it was smothered in was tasty. My fiance, on the other hand, was very impressed with his Steak Au Poivre.

The Yello Fin Tuna was fantastic, however the interior could have been..way better. The service was great. But it wasnt the type of place that left a memorable experience in your memory. For being a bistro, I had expected the menu to be more "fancy" than it was.

Always a fantastic brunch. They have a kid area where your children can play while you eat or wait for the food. The bloody mary bar is excellent (as long as you dont get there late).

We love this spot for breakfast! Very tasty. If you have little kids they have a family room with a bunch of toys so you can enjoy your meal while they play. Great service too
