1st course Mushroom cappuccino – a mushroom soup served in a demitasse cup A complementary serving, it was a creamy mushroom puree, wonderfully flavorful and just the right amount to start. 2nd course Escargot a la Françoise – snails in a garlic parsley butter For those not familiar, imagine a steamed oyster in a pesto sauce. The trick, of course, is getting them out of their shell without making a mess. (melted butter and a smooth snail shell make them slippery (see: Pretty Woman)) Main Course Tournedos facon Rossini A beautiful tenderloin, cooked to order, topped with mouth-watering seared foie gras, perched atop a potato cake, mushrooms and asparagus. Ordered rare, the steak was delicate and succulent. The foie gras was prepared perfectly, buttery soft. It is locally provided by a rancher in Minnesota and delivered fresh weekly. The potato cake was like a perfect hashbrown, crisp and crusty on the outside with a soft potato center. The asparagus was neither tough nor mushy. All of the food was very fresh and the flavors complimented each other well. Also ordered at the table Risotto cremeux au crabe et brochette de crevettes grilles Squash risotto topped with blue crab in creamy sauce, topped with skewered tiger shrimp – served with brussel sprouts Magret de canard, legumes rotis et sauce aux cranberries Seared duck breast, cranberry glaze, served with roasted vegetables and asparagus Dessert Bavarois chocolate et noisette Hazelnut and chocolate Bavarian cream cake A circular stack, beginning at the bottom with a very thin layer of cake, topped with Bavarian cream, then a thick layer of hazelnut mousse, with two small chocolates on top. It was rich enough to feel decadent, but light enough that it didn’t send you into a food coma. Wine: 2011 Mas Carlot Costieres de Nimes Les Enfants Terribles I had narrowed down my selection to two Bordeaux or two Cotes du Rhone wines. Eva, one of the proprietors and a properly trained sommelier, narrowed down my selections to two, one from each region. After listening to her describe each, my choice was easy. The Les Enfants Terrible, from Cotes du Rhone, is wonderfully complex and versatile. (‘lays un-font tear-ee-bleh’ – I don’t speak French and the best I can do in pronouncing the language reinforces the negative stereotype French people have of Americans) Smoky, deep tannins on first sip, it opened up quickly after only several minutes in the glass, crafting softer, smoother edges. It demonstrated its resilience by producing different flavor signatures when paired. Cherry, blackberry, and currant came through depending if the dish were steak, duck, or crab. It never overpowered any of the dishes nor disappeared under the food’s flavors. Conclusion Everyone described all of the dishes served to us as excellent. Eva, a native of France, was very friendly and answered any and all of our questions in great detail and even shared some personal stories. It may have helped that one of our party spoke perfectly fluent French. Not for the budget conscious. I had picked a dollar amount I wanted to spend and passed that pretty quickly. But for an occasional indulgence, I cannot recommend Le Chateau strongly enough. It was a fantastic evening and a memorable meal.

PHENOMENAL!! Our waitress was absolutely adorable, super friendly and provided us with exceptional service! The gentleman that greeted us at the door was very polite and also helped us select a bottle of wine that went with both of our meals (Mas Carlot) The escargots were amazing. Our party had ever tried them before, but we were both pleasantly surprised at how good they were. My 8oz filet was beyond perfect. I ordered it rare and it was the most tender thing I have ever eaten. The mouth-feel was simply luscious. The gnocchi and vegetables with light sauce that accompanied it were just right and didnt take away from the presence of such a fantastic cut of meat. Zero complaints heard from across the table about his pork loin, as well. I dont have enough positive expletives and expressions in my vocabulary to adequately explain how amazing our experience was. What an unforgettable evening. We WILL be back!!

This review is specifically for La Cave bar. This is a relatively new (June 2016) addition to the Le Chateau restaurant. Probably the most forward-thinking and adventurous cocktail bar in La Crosse. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. To get there take the narrow winding staircase down from the Le Chateau restaurant. I had one of their “Smoked Cocktails” - Fumé Old Fashioned. Their Old Fashioned should NEVER be confused with the traditional “Wisconsin” Old Fashioned [brandy (???) with 7-Up or Sour mix.] Note: there is very little signage for the La Cave or Le Chateau on the building. If you’re not familiar with the area you will want to know the street address.

Delicious food in a beautiful atmosphere. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here. I am a picky eater, and while my wife enjoys more things than I do, shes also not a "fancy food" person. That being said, I ate every course and enjoyed it all. It should be noted that dining here is not a quick sit-down restaurant meal. It is an experience - the meal is brought out in multiple courses, and you can take your time and enjoy yourself. While certainly more expensive than your normal night out, the remarkably attentive staff, the leisure of the evening, and the delightful food make this a place that well likely return to at some point.

Incredibly condescending staff. Food pretends to be French but is really an overpriced abomination of something that may have at one point been French. Avoid this over priced mistake. If youve ever been to France, you will understand. Also, a word of advice to the owner. You may tell your bartender its impolite to argue with your customers. You lost our business the night we were in due to him. It is one thing to be knowledgeable and another to be a pompous twit.

Attempted to make a reservation two weeks in advance - was told restaurant was closed for a private wedding that whole weekend. When a restaurant is willing to turn away an everyday customer to host a private event, it can make the everyday customer feel less than important. Be a restaurant or a banquet hall - not both. There are plenty of other fine dining establishments in La Crosse that will treat you like a valued patron.

We have eaten here 3 times and each time I have ordered the pressed chicken every time and it is outstanding. We especially love the Le Cave which has in my opinion the best drinks and best ambience in the midwest. You have to try the smokin drinks for a great drinking experience. La Crosse has a diamond here.

This is by far one of the best restaurants in the Midwest. The food and ambiance should only be compared with some of the best restaurants you would find in major cities. When you are greeted with smiles and a pick of wonderful wines it only adds to the fact that we are lucky to have this gem in La Crosse.

Food is ok. A bit pricey. Very slow service. Expect to be there a very long time. I have had several different menu options, but the steak pomme frites is the only thing I would like to order again.

I would go back simply for the French Onion soup alone! We enjoyed all 3 hours of a special anniversary night. Friendly, knowledgeable servers, decadent food & wonderful wine. Bravo, Chateau!

Yum, charming and made my birthday extra special. It was a tad warm due to hot days but sit in front of a AC unit as the food and atmosphere are worth it.
