Visited this restaurant by chance when I was waiting for my plane at SeaTac. Took the fantastic rail system Seattle has all the way within a few blocks of Pikes Place Market. When in Pikes Place, we just stopped at the first restaurant we saw, which was Athenian. It was nice to walk out of the crowd which was on the tail end of the peak crowd. The first thing I noticed was the hostess were very lax. I am young so I dont care much, but I like to be greeted with a perky smile and not someone just sitting there taking my name and leaning back against the bar behind them. We got seated quickly in the upstairs loft overlooking the water. Great view. Chairs were made of wood, so not really comfortable, but this place is fairly old so it adds to the atmosphere. Weird complaint but they give you the smallest freakin glasses of water. It is basically a shot glass. I could shoot my water if it had no ice lol I will come back to this point in a minute. At first, the waitress was prompt to serve us. I was a little disappointed because I asked an opinion between 2 entrees and she just told me what was better but didnt say why at all. Most places will explain taste but she appeared to tell me just based on price ($5 difference between the entrees). After she took my food order, I never saw her again basically. I am a camel, I drink a lot of water. When she did finally get back to us, AFTER I got my food and was half way through it, I requested a larger glass of water because I knew she wouldnt be back soon enough to fill my shot glass before it was gone. The food though was good. I had some King Salmon with Eggplant raspberry glaze. It wasnt the best salmon in the world but it was very good and I was pleased with the quality and taste for the price, which was $17.99. All in all, service needs some help but it is a nice little place. Beware it is pricy but it is good quality seafood.

Rude and unfriendly people greeted us when we arrived for Sunday morning breakfast / brunch. 2 of us arrived and requested a table for our daughter, son in law and 2 kids. Although there were numerous open tables, we were told that we could not be seated until everyone was ready to be seated. They would not let us sit and have a coffee at the table while we waited 10-15 minutes for the others to arrive. They said we could sit at the bar and wait, but could not be seated at a table. We have been regulars for a couple of years. We are there every Seattle Seahawks game day. Never again. Lowells, the restaurant next door was packed with a line. Maybe the diners knew what we found out. They do no seem to care about how to greet guests. We walked to Ettas and had a great time with people who appreciated that fact that we decided to dine there. The food has always been good. The service is usually fairly good. There are many good places to eat at Pike Place Market. Athenian has a good view, but this poor customer service lets us know they do not value our business.

THURSDAY AUGUST 18, 2011 ... Quality and Service are everything. My Rating for THE ATHENIAN INN is VERY GOOD! Our Server was Brianna. She was pleasant, competent and attentive. We shared a simple Lunch while seated on the second level with an outstanding view of Elliott Bay. Athenian Seafood Bisque, Very Good. Baked Goat Cheese, Excellent. Salmon Burger, which actually turned out to be a well seasoned and grilled Filet was, Very Good. This place is accessed off Pike Place Market and we found it to be a nice retreat from the crowds even though the restaurant was far from empty. One of the marks of a good place is how they balance the customer traffic with available seating. In this case they did an Excellent job so that everyone got a nice view of the waterfont and no one felt crowded. When we were done dining we stopped for a quick look at Tom Hanks spot at the bar and returned to the crowds in Pike Place Market to continue our shopping excursion. We will return.

Terrible service & everythings overpriced. Ive been here twice - 2nd time was with friend from out of town. Both times the waiters were cold. The 2nd time is especially awful. We waited for ~10 minutes until our waiter shows up, and everything she does take > 5 minutes. We had to explicitly ask for the check because weve already packed everything in the to-go box but she didnt show up. She ended up walking by us TWICE with both hands empty, and only brought the check on her third run. The food are overpriced. The seafood are mostly > $20, but this is Seattle, this is a seafood market, not some inland city. And with the level of service I received twice, the price is just ridiculous. TBH there are some capable waiters. The ones that wiped our table and poured water were nice and warm, but I dont understand why they were only assigned to those jobs.

Id give this place a 5 star rating for the view from the upstairs mezzanine alone. We stumbled across it one morning when we were looking for something to eat and got pulled in by its olde world charm (been there since 1909) I realized Id eaten in a lot of places over my life that were trying to be what the Athenian naturally was. I had the 4 cheese scramble, which was everything I want in an egg breakfast. Coffee was great, Im not a huge fan of milk from tiny disposable single serve packets, but hey, when youre eating breakfast in America... Portions were human sized, none was wasted and I left fully satisfied. I was only in Seattle for a week but I went back again for lunch also a good experience. Good service both times. Next time Im in Seattle Ill be back for breakfast.

Arrived just past noon on a Sunday when the Pike Place Market was packed due to the awesome weather of the weekend after several days of non-stop rain. Being alone I expected to get a seat on the bar but instead got a great booth by the window overlooking the bay(!) The service was awesome and I was glad they offer breakfast all day long since I really wanted to try their Crab and Shrimp Cake Benedict which turned out to be really yummy, and what I can appreciate: low on salt, so less sodium for my diet (why is it that so many other restaurants miss this?) Coffee was good too, something a Colombian Café fan can love too! All in all, amazing experience and very nice service. Highly recommended.

Do not go here if you dont like noise and the Pike Place atmosphere. Busy, bustling place and full of conversions, the place is always packed! We had a party of 8 on a Saturday at noon - no way we were going to NOT have a wait, so we sat at the bar, simpler than waiting for them to have to throw together an 8 top! Fast, efficient service. Food was absolutely what I expected, delicious. Our entire party got completely different things - from oyster shooters to Belgian tripel, from fish tacos to soup. Everyone left full, checks all had tip included and everything was split up correctly. Will definitely be back next trip!
