We headed for the UJP based on Google reviews and unexpectedly came to a street full of construction equipment. Not to worry; theyre refurbing the pedestrian mall on which the pub is located and it looks like its going to be a gorgeous place. If I understood correctly, the whole thing is supposed to be finished by May 2013. For now, you walk narrow strips of sidewalk to get there (unless you drive to the back door, which we didnt see). Our light meal consisted of a wonderful soup. The beer I had was superb -- they appear to have a really great selection of beers worth taking an interest in. We sat in the dining area, which was pleasant enough; however, I later noticed that sitting in the bar area was perhaps even nicer for a quiet dinner. The place wasnt throbbing to multi-screen entertainment, a good thing in our book. Our waitress was not only helpful with our order but also with thoughtful advice about lodgings in Winchester.

This is my neighborhood pub. I like it. I keep coming back. Why would anyone else like it? Lets start with 42 taps, 8 or 9 of which are dedicated to hopps/IPAs. Stouts, ciders, seasonals, and a host of regulars will satisfy almost anyones tastes. And then there is the bottled collection if you want to try something else. Billed as a British pub, it should probably claim the title of gastropub, because the food offerings break out of the category. No one is perfect. Perhaps it is because I have come to know the staff, but I have never had a "questioable" item that was not immediately addressed, corrected or credited, or both. If you can only try one stop on the Winchester walking mall, this is it.

Today, may 26th at 1:45, my boyfriend and I went to lunch for our 2 year anniversary and our waiter, Alex, did an amazing job! He was on top of everything and was very chill. The only very disappointing flaw about the amazing outside seating was the other waitress, woman with short brown hair and tattoo on her forearm, said a very snide remark about my boyfriends army ptsd German Sheppard. It was shocking and she was also bossing the poor boy around with her, she was Im assuming training. There was a very stuck up attitude about her that was not needed in a server enviornment/position. But I love this place and again Alex did an amazing job!

Second time of bad service. Second time of being treated badly. The Union Jack has fallen far from where they started. The manager pestered me and my nephew and I left our hamburgers on the table and ended up walking out. I do not begrudge the kitchen for the excellent food they turn out but the attitude of management is terrible. This all came about because I would not give up a chair as I was expecting more at my table which I explained to the manager. She demanded the chair. We ended up at the next restaurant over where the service was more professional and pleasant.

This is one of my favorite places for lunch when I am in the Winchester area. It has about 20 draft beers, including some British favorites, catering for all tastes. The food is good: as an ex-pat Brit I like the fish and chips with mushy peas. The beer-battered cod is always good and is served with "scraps", as it would be in a British chippy. My wife liked the Shepherds Pie but I havent ever got past the fish and chips! The pub also sells growlers (very reasonably) so you can take half a gallon of your favorite beer home with you.

Bartenders on this Friday night were great. The place wasnt as crowded as normal. I specifically came here tonight (I only go out twice a month) for the Tikka Masala but unfortunately they didnt have all the components to the dish to serve me at 1025pm. (Regular menu Kitchen closes at 1030) I had a burger instead, bacon was limp, egg was cooked all the way, and burger needed S & P) Ive been a Chef in the industry for years and it was an overall average experience. The bartenders saved the night for me which was a breath of fresh Air.

Went there for lunch on Saturday and it took a while to get a table. The server was rude, rushed and it took 10 minutes to give our drink order. By then we knew what we wanted and then it took 45 minutes to get our food. It was barely warm and one order was wrong. The servers response was, "I told them," and we had to ask for him to take it back to get it right. He then did not bring the food for others who were waiting. All in all, it was a disappointing visit as someone had recommended it. We wont be going there again.

Union Jack appeals to the family dinning out as well as to those whod like to meet with friends in their unique English pub. Try anything on the menu and your certain not to be disappointed. Whether its fish and chips or one of their hundreds of craft beers, bottle or draft, you CANT go wrong here. When people use to ask me where to go out for lunch or dinner, I never hesitated in answering them, Union Jack on the walking mall. My family has recently moved from Winchester but Ill ALWAYS remember this pub and restaurant.

I have gone here with my wife and kids 4-5 times and we have always had a good experience. The food is solid pub fare- nothing too fancy, but good. If there is seafood chowder on the menu, get it- one of the best I have had. The beer list is fantastic with lots of great choices. Finally, the owner, who did a great job renovating this place, always seems to be around and concerned about your experience. Well continue going here when we are in Winchester.

Need bigger venue for weekend crowds and if you cannot keep up with demand of scones, either offer them at selected times or not have them on menu.... bar is crowded and noisy and not best dining experience... perhaps expand building???? Waitstaff near bar needs to be on point. 3rd time I have eaten here and not been able to get scones... seriously forget what I said above...just take them off menu I am tired of asking everytime I come.

My friends and I used to really like this place, but this is the second time weve been ripped off. This time, the manager overcharged us $30 instead of $15 for a bottle of wine because "the waiter made a mistake entering it into the system" and refused to change it. She was the manager working Friday, September 16th at 4 pm. Theyve lost our business forever--go to 50/50 Tavern instead. I hope that was worth their $15.

I really like the idea of Union Jacks. A British pub (owned by a real Briton) that serves a huge variety of craft beers and fish and chips to boot, all located in a recently rebooted area of Winchester. However a lot of the potential is mooted by the experience/atmosphere disconnect caused by the sub- par wait staff and service. Pretending that youre happy to see your customers would go a long way here.

Took 10 minutes to be acknowledged that we were waiting to be seated, another 20 minutes to be seated, and over an hour to get food after we ordered. The service was terrible and when the food finally came out the burger was dry and the fries were cold and disgusting. If they were super busy maybe Id cut them some slack, but they werent. Overpriced and terrible experience all around. Never again.
