I have dined at Merroir on two occasions, as it is far from my home. The food was excellent on both occasions, which is why I am willing to go out of my intended route for a return visit. My impression has always been that it is a "Designer Destination" intended for the Boomer Set, and certainly on my first visit that was obvious, as the premises was packed with convertible BMWs or above and their golden and svelte owners. You dont go to Merroir for the bargain basement prices--but the Rappahannock Oyster is deservedly famous, there are boutique beers and elite wines, and you will be seen by people who are--much like yourself. So I would say a visit is more of an investment in something that is actually good in Virginia. My second visit (yesterday, January 19, 2017) was much quieter--although the month of January has a genuine "R" in it, perhaps the young urban professionals and their trophy wives/girlfriends prefer to make their moves on each other in Springtime, when they can more comfortably lower the tops on their convertibles and wear less cumbersome elegant clothing. Even in January the view to the Rappahannock River is rich and wonderful; and the oysters are patiently waiting: I feel quite sure they will always be delicious at Merroir!

Best restaurant on the Chesapeake. Open every day with excellent food and perfect service. Dont worry if its chilly, they have blankets to wrap up in so you can still enjoy the outdoor dining OR dine out on the heated porch or inside where you can hang out with the shuckers. Started out as an oyster tasting room and grew because of the great food. Interesting beers and wines and fun casual atmosphere. Our go to restaurant to take visitors. Just across the river from the Northern Neck. Love, love, love this place! I would be willing to bet those who are complaining about portion size [being too small] need to revisit what a full portion size should be. If you are looking for huge platters of food, there is a buffet in the motel restaurant that will be cheap and huge--all you can eat. We are more interested in healthy sized portions and really good locally caught and grown food. Better to spend money on healthy food than on pills and doctor bills. NOthing wrong with having room for dessert--especially here.

Do not expect to leave with a full belly! Smallest oysters Ive ever eaten with the highest prices. Tasted good for the small amount served. Guess I found out what grown caged oysters are, what they are all small, very small. This is listed as a "tasting house" which means you will get a taste and not a meal. Nice outdoor setting though... The worst part was our waitress, she had attitude, think we were bothering her to have her wait on us. She was the older waitress as the younger college girls always had a smile on their faces and great attitude, but this older server did not. Maybe she was intimidated by the younger staff. Went there for my sons birthday and her attitude really put a damper on our visit. Will not be back, tough to spend $150 for the four of us to leave still hungry and disgusted with our waitress!

After a full day of wine tours of the Northern Neck (80 miles) it was a delight to finish off the day to dine on the waterfront. Different from their 5 restaurants, Merroir is considered a "Tasting Room". There is wine tasting room but we opted to sit outside & be served. The food is either served raw or cooked on an outdoor grill, small-plate-style, beautifully paired with craft brews and world-famous wines. This is ground-zero for the Chesapeake Oyster.

Merroir a “tasting room”. There are plenty of places on the American dining scene to fill your gut. Merroir is not one of them and I don’t think that is their goal. I think what they want to do is to provide a variety of perfectly prepared comestibles, which in my opinion they do. Prices are a function of cost plus experience. The standard restaurant markup is 80% to cover expenses. Is the scenery worth the cost? I think it is.

Recommended to us by Angela at Chesapeake Inn in Urbanna, we were very happy to have an excellent tapas-style lunch on the patio. It was barely 40°F and a windy but sunny day. With the heat and wind protection on the patio, we were able to pretend it was late spring. Food was awesome and the craft beer on-tap selection was stunning given the distance from "civilization." Go here. You owe it to yourself.

Merroir is self-described as a tasting room which I originally thought was a curious notion; however, that is exactly what we enjoy doing there tasting delicious fresh seafood, small plate dishes, and great wine! The chef is amazing-- one one visit we delighted in a cold watermelon/radish soup. On a beautiful day, there is no place better to be. At midday there is limited shade.

Merrior is my favorite restaurant in the both the Middle Peninsula and the Northern Neck. It is hard to improve upon sitting in a lovely, casual, outdoor restaurant watching the Rappahannock River flow by while eating incredibly fresh oysters and partaking from a fine selection of wines or beers. The service is friendly and attentive. A wonderful place for lovers of oysters.

We come on New Years Day. The outside was very nicely set up but we ate inside at the bar. We had oysters all different ways. Cook, raw, fancied... They were all delicious. I would put this on my top five oyster eating experiences. The best was how inexpensive this was compared to DC oysters. I look forward to the day I get to go back and hang out all day.

My wife and I love driving up from Yorktown to enjoy the food, drink, and ambience at Merroir. We have been there 5 or 6 times. Like to grab another couple and head up for a weekend lunch or early dinner. We go for the oysters and other seafood dishes. I see a few negative comments here. Not our experience. This is one of our favorite spots!

Excellent food. Its quite clear from descriptions and the sign you walk under ("a tasting place"...not a restaurant!) that portions are small...great for pairing with adult beverages! Not sure why people are griping about portion size. Busy when we arrived in the rain, but we were served relatively quickly. The food was superb.

This place is pricey but worth the visit. The food menu is limited but the items are tasty. They offer beer and wine on tap, as well as bottled choices. Go here for the oysters and the beer/wine selections, and enjoy the beautiful views and relaxing atmosphere. Skip the dessert. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor dining area.

This place is a gem. Its off the beaten path but well worth the trip. We had raw oysters, roasted oysters and some ceviche that was delicious. The view on the water is outstanding and the atmosphere is friendly and fun. The crew out there was exceptional and made our visit an evening to remember.

Great location, charming rustic coastal atmosphere, fairly wide selection of beer and wine, food is good but limited in selection, portions are small, prices are high. They could use a few fly strips in the summer. Fun to arrive by boat rather than car, there are several dock spaces available.
