AMAZING FOOD, FANTASTIC SERVICE, AND A GREAT ATMOSPHERE...So, I am having lunch here at the Ginger Red Bistro and decided I would write a well deserved recommendation. I came in for lunch and ordered a Cashew Chicken Lunch Special. It came with white rice, and I asked for a small bowl of chicken fried rice (like they make the large platters - with sauteed chicken and veggies) along with my white rice... At another restaurant yesterday, I basically got chewed out for even asking this, today - it was not a problem ($1 more)... I also ordered a spring roll, and a Shrimp Tempura Roll. Did I mention that this place has Japanese Food, Vietnamese food, Thai Food, and other Asian Foods on top of the Chinese Food? But I digress... the appetizers came first along with the Tempura Roll --- PERFECT! The sauces were amazing. I even asked the server for small bowls of vinegar, chili oil, hot mustard, and Soy Sauce, along with a soup bowl for mixing my own sauce... Once again, not a problem! I was accommodated with a smile! The main course came just in time, freshly prepared and savoring with the right blend of spices. As I sit dining, there are 6 local police officers who, when asked, agree that this is the best Asian place around... hands down... and I could not agree more! The service is amazing (I have been sitting here for over an hour now, and I am not being rushed out of the door, as most places tend to do) The officers also mentioned that I have to come for the Sunday Brunch which is an all-you-can-eat brunch with a twist - they MAKE your food as you order it, and as you want more, they cook it for you! BTW, the cost of my great meal? about $15 WITH my shrimp tempura sushi roll, Cashew Nut Dish, Chicken Fried Rice, White Rice, AND Spring Roll... What a deal!!! This is a gem in Mechanicsville (and I dare say the entire Richmond area)

The first thing I noticed upon walking into the restaurant, among other things, was the friendliness and kindness of the staff. The hostess met us with a smile and an up-beat attitude. Upon taking us to our seats, she explained the days specials and engaged in light conversation. As we waited for our server to arrive, we took note on the cleanliness of our surroundings. Everything from the menus to the salt and pepper shakers were as clean as I had ever seen. Our server was very knowledgeable on the food menu as well as the "bar" menu. She suggested a wine, that we had never tasted, and offered to bring us a sample. (we ended up having 2 glasses each!) After she suggested a few different dishes, we decided to go with both the Black Pepper Steak Noodles and the Honey Glazed Chicken. Might I add, our waitress was very upfront and honest when asked her opinion on certain dishes, without making us afraid to try things. Her honesty was appreciated and her approach even gave us confidence to try something new!! Our food arrived hot and in perfect timing. Both dishes were fantastic. After several months of dining with them, we have been made to feel like family, as opposed to customers. When food doesnt come out right, it is fixed immediately. If we ever have an issue or complaint (which are minor and rare), it is fixed before we can even blink. Not only do they serve good food, in a friendly, clean environment, but they aim to please and do their work right and 100%.

Probably not a fair assessment since I havent dined here for several years. My wife and I experienced this restaurant when they first opened and we found after a handful of repeat visits that their dishes tended to be a bit too salty for our taste. A little time after establishing themselves, they hired a new chef in which the food improved in taste and quality but still seemed salty even when we compared to other chinese food restaurants in Mechanicsville just to make sure we didnt have a biased opinion. Needless to say, this is why I have not revisited. My wife gets a craving for sushi and visits when they run specials certain nights during the week (I dont know if they still run the specials). My wife says the sushi is pretty good considering ...not the best but certainly much better than the convenient alternative at Kroger. Several of my neighbors rave about the place and say they have added an array of asian based foods that span several asian cultures...maybe its time to give it another try and update my rating at a later date.

With several different Asian cuisines represented, the menu has to be vast. The service is lightning fast and some food continues to cook as it is brought to the table in a hot plate. I walked in here with some apprehension because, in the USA, when a restaurant has the word bistro prepare to open that wallet wide. You will pay some money if you order the Peking duck and some lobster dishes, but if you keep it real, youll pay between $10-15 a pop. I had two spring rolls in duck sauce for a appetiser and the orange peel chicken which is nuggets of chicken cooked in a spicy orange glaze served over rice noodles and white rice on the side. The chicken was a little spicier than I thought, but not overwhelmingly so. Its a good dish to order when you have sinus problems. I like food cooked with orange. Even better than that is their Pad Thai Chicken. The sauce is nice and sweet with more than a hint of peanuts. I had prepared myself for it being spicy, but fortunately, this was less spicy than the orange peel chicken.

Used to love this place until I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and even though they offer gluten free food, its very poor in taste and they want to up charge me $4 for a sushi crystal wrap instead of seaweed wrap. The owners does not budge for even a dedicated customer who has been coming since they opened. Not happy with the owners anymore, they got big and dont seem to give the care they used to. I have given Ginger Red the benefit of trying to come back and try different options but Im always disappointed after my visit. Sorry to say I wont be coming back. There are way better Gluten free restaurants that go out of their way to make my experience a good one because food options are extremely difficult for Celiac Sufferers and all other places dont up charge me because Im sick!!! If I could rate them lower, I would.

My girlfriend and I have been coming here every other weekend for almost a year and and we have a great experience just about every time. She has Celiac disease, as well as several other food allergies, and weve never had any trouble. This is one of the only places in town that we can go and be sure that she wont have any contamination issues. Not only do they have gluten-free soy sauce, but they can also substitute in rice paper instead of the seaweed wrap (because seaweed has gluten in it). She generally gets the sushi because she also has several other food allergies, but Ive tried many of the main dishes and theyve all been delicious and well prepared. Weve had a few younger servers that were a bit flighty, but the regulars are all great!

First time here, order a lunch meal to go and she told me it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. So I set at the bar while I waited, the woman I order from looked me dead in my face about 5 times while I was waiting...30 minutes went by til I finally asked how much longer I had on my order. Right away she said "your order is ready" and grabbed a bag I saw them bring out 20 minutes prior. I didnt even have to tell her what I ordered, she knew the whole time and for some reason felt no need to tell me. Needless to say I was pissed since I had to rush to eat my lunch to get back to work on time and on top of that the food wasnt even good. With all the other Chinese options around the area its safe to say Ill never be back here.
