If I could give this place a zero star rating I would. My boyfriend and I went in expecting authentic Mexican and were sorely disappointed. Our first thought when seeing the meat options was "Where is the lengua, or the carnitas?" I settled on a beef enchilada, beef tamale, and rice and beans. The enchilada was made with ground beef, not seasoned shredded beef as in a true Mexican restaurant, and halfway through the tamale (which tasted like the ones you purchase premade in the deli section of a supermarket by the way) they used chicken. The rice and beans were okay, nothing really extraordinary about them. Pretty standard. My boyfriend got a beef taco, beef tostada, and a beef tamale. The taco came out in a hard shell. A hard shell!!! And the tostada did as well, and it was drowning in soupy guacamole and refried beans. For the table they bring complimentary chips with salsa and a ranch dip. Yes, it is your basic buttermilk ranch with seasonings like cilantro, chipotle, and lime. The chips and salsa were passable. The horchata was the only thing I would say was actually good. Even sitting here writing this review I feel my stomach twist and turn.

Our very waiter spoke very little English and miss informed our party of menu choices, we were charged for condiments like sour cream, manager/owner was very rude. In a party of 7 one of the meals was asked to be removed because she didnt like how it tasted and didnt eat it. The manager laughed in her face and walked away from the table, then the cook came out as well as about 6 other staff and grilled her about why she chose that meal if she didnt like it and what about it she didnt like (even though it was her first visit and she had no way of knowing it would be nasty to her). They made it a big spectacle and it was very embarrassing for my cousin who was having her college graduation dinner there. They then informed us that we shouldnt "waste food" and we had to pay. Even after we pleaded that it wasnt fair or in good business practice to treat customers that way. I had been there times before and received poor service, but it was one of the only Mexican restaurants in the area, now we will NOT be back.

The decor was great, the staff was friendly. There was about 2 other guests in the place when I went there so it didnt take long to get my order. I ordered the lunch number 8, I think. 1 beef burrito, 1 tamale and choice of rice or beans. I chose rice and then got an order of beans on the side. The salsa, Blanca dip, and chips were superb. I kid you not though, about 3 minutes after I placed my order, a guy came out with the side of beans. I was a little dumbfounded that it didnt just come with the rest of my food so I ate it with the chips and salsa. Pretty good! When the rest of the food came it was pretty weird after that. The burrito was covered in canned tomato sauce, seriously. The tamale was drowning in a tomato sauce, also canned, and ground beef mixture. The rice and beans though... out of this world! Loved it. Unfortunately, it was their only saving grace. I will not return. I will continue my search for a good Spanish joint.

0-stars if I could!! Paco, our waiter, sucked. The food was just ok. What sets the star at one is because our waiter was practically acting like we bothered him by being there but then turns to the table next to us and sits with them and at the end practically harassed them. The table had two underage girls and the waiter is an older dude; his behavior was extremely inappropriate and the young girls looked uncomfortable. When I said for the waiter to leave them alone he laughed. The entire situation was just unacceptable. Poor service!!

Food was okay. It filled the belly. Refried beans and rice looked microwaved. Refried beans had weird black chunks in it. It took awhile for anyone to come get our drink order and we were the only ones in the place. Once someone finally came over, they were friendly. My husband asked for no onions and peppers in his rice, yet had onions in it. He wasnt told he didnt have a choice, so naturally, he was shocked and not happy he had onions. I wouldnt recommend going here. I definitely wont be back.

We arrived and were immediately sat at a table, drinks came quickly, but we waited for twenty minutes to order. Here is why: our young server left for the evening and didnt tell us or anyone to pick up his tables so the other servers walked around oblivious to the situation until we spoke up. The manager took over our table but the hostility remained toward the jacka$$ server who left. I enjoyed the food and the service we received from the manager, thank you but also no thank you.

Being Mexican and raised in southern California then being stationed in the east coast its hard to find some good home cooked Mexican meals but this has to be one of the top Mexican restaurants in Virginia the portions are a little out of control but you can just take that home. Me personally I dont take it home I just eat it because its that good. The service is great aswell. Its definitely a 5 star hole on the wall. Clean place great food great service.

Restaurant service was good but they need to fix the food. I know what Mexican food is I feel they change the recipes a lot to appease to the local white and black population. I ordered fajitas and they came thinly cut with bone still on it and what seemed to be tomato sauce on the meat. Plus I dont know what the heck is in the queso blanco. Absolutely disgusting. When I asked for menudo they did not know what I was talking about.

I dont know what these people are smoking that are writing bad reviews except they dont have taste buds honestly... This is one of the best resturants I mean we didnt know they branched out to hampton and we would drive all the way to norfolk to eat there all the time. When we left Va this was the only reason we decided to come back... Food is so good the best Mexican nothing else compares and the price is worth it... we love it

The food is great... The margaritas are priced great and the workers are friendly. I have been to this place at least 500 times! Believe me its that good. I went to plaza azteca.. I believe its the competition for EL Azteca. Its nowhere near it. The food at plaza is cheat in prize but also cheap in flavor and authenticity. If you really want to have a great time and dine real Mexican food , I recommend you to visit EL AZTECA.

We arrived 830pm on Friday night, and all the wait staff cared about was closing up (10pm was their closing time). After we got our food the wait staff totally ignored us, another round of drinks forget it. They would not even look our way so I could call them over. I had to get up and complain even to get a water. I mean come on there was only 4 tables occupied, with 5 waiters on staff, and no service. Horrible experience!

Best Mexican food in Hampton Roads by far! Im full Mexican so nothing compares to grandmas cooking, but this place comes pretty darn close! The complimentary salsa (which will tell you everything u need to know at any Mexican place) is freaking amazing. The prices are great with big portions. The food is always fresh and steaming hot. The servers are always quick and friendly. Delicious every time.
