I was driving through Virginia with a friend and it was time for lunch. Always on the lookout for local restaurants and especially regional BBQ, I spotted the fat pink pig on the roadside sign and HAD to track it down. Pulling in, I was hit with the wood smoke aroma of their BBQ pit. This is the real deal. It was packed, another good sign. The lady at the door offered menus and instructed us to choose a seat and come to the line when we were ready to order. Oh, I was ready and the line wasnt getting smaller so we stood fast and had plenty of time to peruse the menu while those ahead of us ordered. I got the pulled pork special: sandwich, side, and drink. There were too many good sides: coleslaw, mac & cheese, fried okra, green beans, sweet potato casserole, and more I cant recall. I wanted to try them all but I was on the road, so I had to make Sophies Choice and went with the fried green tomatoes. And of course I had to try the banana pudding. You order, pay, get your drink, and take your number to your table. They serve you, even if its take-out. I got soda but should have gotten the sweet tea. They were moving tea as fast as they could make it, so you know its good. My friend and I chose the covered outdoor seating because it was a beautiful day. On the tables were 5 sauces: Lexington (a vinegar, pepper, and spice mix that brings out the smokiness of the meat without overpowering the flavor and counters the fattiness with its bright acidity), Sweet Brown, Sweet Red, Hot Red, and Carolina Mustard (all exactly what you would imagine. The Hot Red was very thick, smoky, and spicy. It would probably be great on the brisket). All 5 were very good but have no business polluting quality pork. In just a few minutes a nice lady brought our food, and things got serious. The meat was perfect. Presented naked, coarsely shredded, not chunky but not without texture, with some crispy edge bits, tender and smoky and flavorful on its own. A teeeensy bit dry, but the Lexington Sauce was there to save the day. It moistened and tanged up the pork and added a little bit of pepper heat here and there. This is some dang good pork. Not the best Ive ever had, but a tight 3rd or 4th. Thinking about it makes me want to go back. And its a 6-hour drive from home. The fried green tomatoes were perfect. Gorgeous golden-brown, perfectly crisp breading, sliced just thick enough to stand up, soft but not mushy inside. So flavorful and well-seasoned they didnt need the dipping sauce. The hush puppies were slightly sweet and very good, as far as hush puppies go, but I had to sacrifice the last 2 to finish the sandwich. The banana pudding was so-so. I think it had whipped cream in it. It was nice that it was not too sweet, it was just a different texture than I typically see. The pieces of banana in it were the best part, so I fished them all out. Writing this review is giving me crazy pork cravings. Luckily, I got some of their Butt Rub and Lexington Sauce to bring home. This place is a gem, and Ill be stopping in any time Im in the area. And finding more reasons to be in the area!

Generally a solid place for barbecue. Serves pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and smoked chicken with an abundance of sides. There is a regular menu and a lunch special menu. 6 different sauces at each table (my preference being the Sweet Brown and Hot Red), and a roll of paper towel. Seat yourself wherever, and head up to the register to order. Theyll give you a receipt and a yellow number, then bring your food to your table when its ready. Seating available indoors and outdoors, and on certain nights theres live music. My fav from them is their brisket and smoked taters, though my mom prefers the pulled pork. Both meats are coarsely chopped with some crispy bits and a little fat to up the flavor. Unfortunately the meat can sometimes be a little dry, depending on the day.

We just ate here as frequent customers. My kids were acting out so we decided to put it in boxes and take it home. After placing my kids in the car with my husband I went back in to grab two sauces to go. The guy was trying to charge me 0.50. Although this isnt a huge charge we just spent $30 on two plates of food. Food is good, but service sucks. Seriously, how hard would it have been to give two sauces. The guy asks "did you have a box? " I reply "yes, but its already out in the car" his response beats all Ive ever heard "you can go back out and get the box, squirt in which sauces you want" inconsiderate. We will not be eating there again, and I will. Make sure to tell everyone I know. Hope it was worth it guys.

Our waiter today was clearly hostile towards us in a way Ive not seen, and for reasons i dont know. Usually when a person acts bad upon you its not manifested. But this lady was blatant with her attitude, and was arguably racist. Due South has always been a service restaurant where tips are paid for service; however, my friend got called by this lady to "clean up the table" when we were about to leave. We stayed polite and patient all the time. It is my belief that we were treated differently compared to the other customers. I would advise management to take action and bring back the good service this place had before.

Very disappointing!! Almost none of the sides are made in house. I ordered a half rack of ribs dry, they arrived smotheted in sauce. I sent them back and what they brought me was jerky dry and not on the bone. It looked like the leftovers from the ends of a rack. Apparently they dont know the meaning of "dry" in the bbq pit smoking world. Dry means "dry rubbed" not "jerky. Honestly I owned a successful rotisserie smoked restaurant for years and I would never have served my customers what this place served me. Not only will I never return but this place wont even get a mention on my blog or in my book.

Southwestern Virginia is the last place that one would expect to find good barbecue, but if you live here, look no further than Due South! We dare you to drive by. See if you can resist the charm of the pink van with the pig ears on top and the smell of some delicious BBQ. Do you prefer clear or red sauce? It doesnt matter, because the food is so good you dont even need it! I particularly recommend the pulled pork and the half rack of ribs. Hell, I recommend everything. In addition to great food, you get friendly service and a unique atmosphere. I will be going back many more times, and bringing friends.

Some people like their food, some people dont; Im one of the ones who do. I cant eat any of their sides because Im low carb, but their pork and smoked chicken are really good! The only problems I have are with their service. Several times my company has ordered bulk foods for events, only to have it either not ready on time, or items not available at the last minute. Their management is good for providing replacements and/or adding freebies to make up for the mistakes, but its just too unreliable. But yea, the food is great!
