While my wife was living in MN, every time she would come back to CHO she insisted that we visit Maharaja for some butter chicken and chicken sagwala. Paired with some punjabi naan, that meal is one of my favorite in all of Charlottesville. Chef J. is a great guy and everyone should visit. Hes always there, when does he sleep? The menu is varied and offers something for everyone, the standard spice ranges on the buffett and menu are targeted towards American palates, so if you are used to native Indian food, make sure you request extra spicy or additional spices on the side. The seafood dishes could be better, but its hard to get fresh seafood in central VA without charging an arm and a leg. The buffett is an incredible value.

The ambience here is very calming, almost as if you are stepping into a wealthy home in India. The service is courteous and attentive, but not invasive in their approach. The atmosphere inclines one to stay for awhile, which is a good thing, as the food can take a bit of time to reach the table. Granted, taking the time to prepare the food is only part of the experience that they are trying to create here. Meals here are meant to be shared and experienced, not simply eaten and viewed as simple food. It is well worth the wait. Enjoy yourself here and let the many layers and textures of this cuisine take you out of the general rat race. I will be returning here as often as is possible. Definitely worth your time.

The staff are friendly, the place has a warm atmosphere and is well-decorated, the food is fantastic. My only complaint is the prices are high unless you are buying food from the lunch buffet which serves a great variety of their best dishes. All this "my family nearly threw up" and "be sure to have giradasis after a meal there" is ridiculous. Im sorry your precious snowflakes got nausea after eating there. Maybe you shouldnt drive your SUV like a stunt car on your way home and next time they wont feel so sick. I have a very sensitive stomach due to a medical condition I deal with and the only time Ive had an issue with Maharaja food is when I tried to finish off my entire plate and ended up overeating.

It is heavenly to be able to eat from a buffet as a vegan! Fellow veggies reading this, go support these good people for having such a veggie-friendly buffet (and menu of course). I never imagined myself eating at a buffet after taking the green. Everything was delicious, and the service was so non-generic and friendly. My eating companion said the meat eaters side was also delicious. The buffet also has the perfect spicy level for someone like me who cant handle spicyness

We were there for dinner, had a wonderful evening, and excellent service. The Naan bread was fabulous, and the lamb curry absolutely delicious. The tandoori chicken was perhaps a little dry - in fact I wondered if it had been reheated. It also lacked a bit in flavour, and did not come with the traditional raita. I guess it needed to be ordered separately! Overall an excellent experience.

Definitely the Best Indian cuisine in Albemarle. Milan is decent, but Maharaja is excellent. Don't miss this authentic gem tucked away in the Seminole Square shopping center. The owner & staff are very courteous & cater to a lot of Charlottesville's celebrities. They also have a delicious daily lunch buffet that is a real bargain. Don't miss out on this spot!

Food is subpar, service is even worse. Management makes no attempt to rectify mistakes. There are too many BETTER OPTIONS out there. This place will likely be closed within the year. Ordered delivery from this place. Took 3+ hours. Management wouldnt rebate the delivery fee OR our tip, which we had pre-specified when we gave them our credit card.

Poor service, the Waiter takes forever to get around, the owner is very assure of himself about his food and couldnt recommended a particular dish stating all his food is great. The food tasted the same and the price was horriable. On top of that he added the 18% to the pull for tip when it was a party of 3. Go to Milan its down the street.

STALE FOOD: All curries have the same color. They looked the same, tasted the same {probably frozen and kept for a long time) Be sure to have giardiasis/amoebiasis after a meal there. The manager was also very rude ,lacked basic manners. Poor service. Its better to fast than have a meal there.

Ive enjoyed many Indian cuisine restaurants and although this isnt the best that Ive had, for this area, it was great! They have a broad menu with many options suited to any diet, or palatte. :-)

Tasty food and friendly service. Great vegetarian options. Chana Masala was a little too "tomatoey" but the other three plates were great, veggie korma, dal saag and palak paneer.

Food is very tasty but on the other hand service is very slow. I ordered the chicken vindaloo very tasty and spicy will come back but for carry out only due to slow service.

Consistently great food, excellent service, generous coupon offerings, and a quiet place to have a conversation while you eat keeps my family coming back again and again.

Maharaja is great, but note that the website address listed here is to Milan, another (also great) Indian restaurant in Charlottesville.

As others have pointed out, the food is very Americanized and inconsistent. However, the other Indian Restaurants in Cville are worse.
