Terrible food and experience. We had to wait half an hour to be seated, once we were told our table was ready we were told again to sit and wait. After we finally got a table it took another 10 minutes before we ever saw our waitress. Then it took another 15min before we actually got our drinks. They brought a dirty wine bottle of warm tap water and two glass, one of which had someones old lipstick prints still on it. We were never bought utensils or napkins, we had to get up and find someone to ask for napkins. Seriously. The food took forever to come out and was mediocre at best. The burgers were bland and unseasoned. The swiss cheese on the wild mushroom and swiss burger was grainy. I dont even know how you manage to find cheese with a grainy texture. The "black onion" on that burger was also just a 1/2 inch thick slice of onion burned beyond recognition. It was disgusting. All in all a terrible, extremely overpriced experience. We will NEVER go back.

The good: I visited on a Sunday night when they were super busy, but because I was willing to sit inside, I got seated right away. I got my food really quickly: fresh breaded and fried onions rings for an appetizer and the American burger for the main dish. Both were fantastic. Its a local business that supports local brewaries and farms. The portions are great for the price. There are also plenty of vegetarian and customization options to accommodate dietary restrictions. The meh: My waitress mixed up my side order. She also disappeared shortly after I got my food, so getting the check was a challenge. Inside was also incredibly loud and had >4 TVs, so I wouldnt advise visiting for a romantic date. Overall, if youre out for a casual night and want something delicious, visit Citizen Burger bar for some local brews and burgers.

Alright. Full disclosure: I am aware that vegetarians and vegans are not your primary patrons; However, Charlottesville is full of us and when we see a good burger place that has a vegan option, we get excited! Unfortunately, Citizen did not live up to the expectation. What could possibly be the worst thing for a veggie burger to resemble? Oh, thats right! RAW HAMBURGER MEAT! The vegan patty at Citizen is made of beets and is the same mushy consistency of raw hamburger meat. The blood red color of the beets is completely unappetizing and it is lacking any taste. You all should do yourself a favor and stick with the classic black bean patty- you cant go wrong. That being said... Everything else is great and the service is awesome. I guess I will just have to settle for a grilled cheese if I go back.

I came here for a late Sunday lunch, and I was very impressed! I typically dont like just going out for a burger, but this place made burgers much more interesting. Their fries honestly make the meal. We ordered sweet potato fries as an appetizer and had the regular fries with our burgers, and both were cooked perfectly. I also really enjoyed the delicious local malt vinegar for the fries. The burger was cooked well, although Ive had better. The best part of the burger was the black onion that came on it. For the onion lovers out there, you get a whole slice of a blackened onion. While this may not be for everyone, since Im always wishing got more onions, this made me very happy. Definitely a place to check out.

Came here for lunch on a Friday while traveling through Charlottesville, excited to try the burgers since there is also a location in the DC area. My classic burger (with jalapenos) was way too juicy and actually the meat was a little bland. My wife got the same burger and half of her patty was very flavorful. Then, the other half of it was not. The onion rings were fairly large but they skimped on the quantity -- my wife literally got 5 rings -- but the fries were pretty decent. All in all, a bit disappointed in the lack of flavor of the burger. Maybe it was an off day?

A delicious, though messy, meal. I got "The Chicken Sandwich" (a grilled chicken sandwich with BBQ sauce) and found it delicious, though when paired with fries the meal was incredibly salty. Luckily our waiter was attentive enough to leave a nice large bottle of water at the table to quench our thirst. My partner got their vegan patty, which she says was surprisingly good, though unfortunately they were out of the vegan buns so she had to get it as a lettuce wrap. Our waiter was nice enough to check in with the kitchen about allergies, which we definitely appreciated.

My girlfriend and I dont eat beef but every once in a blue moon. So this was a treat for her and I. The burgers are huge and reasonably priced. I like how you can create your own burger masterpiece as an option instead of the specialty sandwiches. They also cater to those who dont eat beef with a chicken, vegan patty. The beef is grass fed and grass bred from local farms near by as well the veggies, house cut fries and house made sauces. They have a huge beer and wine selection as well. This place rocks!!!

Citizen Burger is an excellent restaurant. They have awesome burgers (ive tried many of their varieties), excellent big salads, and a great selection of beers. The fries are awesome too, especially the truffle fries, but I usually go for the shishito peppers when Im there because theyre delicious and unique. Go here and youll have a great time. If its warm out, consider the patio. In the numerous times Ive been here Ive always had excellent, attentive service, even when theyre packed which they usually are.

Its absolutely ridiculous they only cook the burgers pink or no pink ie bloody or way overcooked. Its a great bar but the burgers are overrated and overpriced, meat doesnt have a lot of flavor to it and whats with the anchioves on the Caesar salad? Disgusting and Im pretty sure if you ask for no anchioves they just take them off an already made salad so you can still taste it. However minus the anchioves its the best Caesar salad Ive ever had, good place but definitely underachieving in several ways.

Solid american upscale burger bar! You will not leave hungry! The beer battered onion rings (the chef brought mine out) are on point, along with The Citizens burger. I was hoping for a runny fried egg and didnt get that and the fries were ok but nonetheless overall great option! Service is real good too! I am from out of town and found this area to be GREAT! Citizen Burger is located in the Charlottesville downtown shopping area and there are shops and restaurants all over the place! GREAT atmosphere!

This is hands down THE BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER HAD. I almost never get burgers when I am out, because I am always disappointed, and I can usually make a better one, but decided to give it a try here and wow. I got "the hotness" with a fried egg on top. A half pound burger with chili, jalapeno jack cheese, jalapenos, and a fried egg on top. I ate the entire thing, and the resulting stomach fullness was totally worth it. The staff was also fantastic. I wish there was one close to where I live.
