Sad to see mucha bad reviews here. I have been frequenting this restaurant for a good majority of my life - my parents before me as well, back when there was live music. The service has always been quick, drinks are great, and despite what some people are saying here, the food is outstanding - some of the best Mexican food-fare you will find in SLC, not to mention the best Chili Verde I have ever tasted (something I dearly and sadly miss since a re-conversion to vegetarianism). The only food I find to border on the mediocre spectrum is the all cheese Enchiladas - a childhood favorite of mine that last flair as my tastes became more influenced and wise. Past that, you have some great, Releanos, more than palatable Tamales, scrumptious soft pork, the best house-made chips and salsa, delectable and monstrous nachos, and home-away-from-home burritos. It may be true that this place falls under a giant spot light that floods the eyes and wallets of our locals: The Red Iguana. But I would argue, if you would be so kind as to try yourself, that The atmosphere, vibe, crescendo, air, comfort - or whatever you must call it - of the El Chihuahua is far more inviting. If you simply must have the hard-spiced punch to fulfill your Mexican appetite, head to the Red Iguana, if you want the close to home comfort and enveloping relaxation of cheap robust food and fine drink; you know where to go. By the way, best thing you will ever do for yourself; get a "Low Rider" Margarita.

Terrible overall experience! We went here with some friends because I have heard good reviews about this place. When we arrived, we had to wait about 30 minutes to get a seat, which is okay. I figured that if its busy, I take it as a good sign, but that was not the case tonight. We got our drinks relatively quickly, but after our drinks we didnt get a visit from our waiter to order our food for about half an hour. Once the food was ordered, it probably took about another 40 minutes before it finally came out. Worst part, the food isnt noteworthy or different from any other place. By this time we had to leave because it took a lot longer than we thought, we asked our waiter for our check, and we didnt get it for twenty minutes. I finally had to get up and ask him for our check again and told him we were in a hurry, guess what... it still took another 7 minutes. By the time we left it wasnt even busy anymore. Horrible service and they dont value your time at all. I will definitely not be visiting this place again ever. If you want a good Mexican food place, Tres Hombres, La Frontera, La Puente, and hell... even Cafe Rio are all close by and better food quality than here.

I was very disappointed in this restaurant. I heard they had great food from a couple of friends, but I was sadly disappointed. The wait was about 30 minutes which is to be expected on a Friday evening, but seating is extremely limited. The service was pitiful. The waitress didnt offer me a drink. She smudged food from one of our plates onto a family members collar as the place is too cramped. She forgot to bring straws for everyone who ordered a drink with the exception for myself since I wasnt one of the lucky ones to even be offered a drink. We had to ask for refills and then she forgot to bring them so we had to ask her once again. She gave A1 service to a couple sitting next to us whom she seemed to know, NICE!, thus no tip! When the food finally came, we were even more disappointed. They mixed up our plates, but that ddidnt even really matter too much since we filled up on chips by the time our food got there. The food tasted like cafeteria food. I bit on a piece of bone in my beef enchilada, disgusting! Then I spent most of the night with heartburn. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting GOOD mexican food.

We LOVE this place!! However, tonight we were pretty disappointed with the deathstars. 3 out of 4 of us at our table ordered them & we didnt feel like they had any alcohol in them at all. Typically we get a "fun little buzz" & tonight nothing! They are pretty sweet, but usually you can taste a little alcohol, but unfortunately not tonight. They were more like drinking a big bowl of fruit punch... It was extremely busy & we wondered if the drinks "may" have somehow been skipped?!? The alcohol part that is -or- maybe we got "virgin" death stars. The whole reason to order a "death star" is for the buzz, so it was disappointing. Especially for $13 a piece. Food was excellent, and our waitress (whom we have had many times) was great! We will be back, and hopefully our next drinks will be much better. I should have talked to someone in management, but my husband wondered how we would prove it. Good point I guess...

9 times out of 10 great. Last time I went (on cinco de Mayo!) was AWFUL! One of the worst service experiences in a restaurant. And, the chimichanga was soggy. I ordered flautas expecting something completely different than what came. I understand different restaurants do things different, if they were edible I would have kept them. When I asked to send them back because they were not what I expected and DRY as sandpaper the server sent a manager out that spoke down to me and berated me for not knowing what a "traditional flauta" was. One last thing... on cinco de Mayo I was hoping for Mexican music, they were playing oldies. When we asked the server if Mexican music could be played she was annoyed and said they have no control over what is played. I was a loyal customer, but this experience has wiped El Chihuahua off my list for good!!!

My friend ordered the taco salad and asked for no sour cream and the guacamole on the side so that we could eat our chips with it. The guac came and we enjoyed our chips and then her salad came WITH guac. We promptly told the gal that have us our food of the error and she said that she would take care of it. When the bill came, sure enough we were charged $6 for a "side" of guacamole. When we brought the mistake up to our waitresses, she said "NO" "You did not ask for it on the side." sooo, were telling a lie??? Really??? Great customer service, not! She got the "manager" whom was so nice as to "share the cost of the side." Needless to say, we will not be return customers. You do not tell your patron that they lie and then insist that they still pay for your mistake. What a horrible restaurant.

It was a fairly nice atmosphere. It felt like the sort of place youd find off of a street in Mexico City, except, ironically, every customer inside was of non-Hispanic origin. In continuation of positive elements to adduce in support of this restaurant, the waitstaff was nice. Into the negatives. The dinner menu was quite egregiously overpriced for not only the quality of food served (dont get the beef burritos), but also for the quality of the establishment, as mentioned previously. So, basically, it was expensive and dissatisfying food. They basically gave you a normal tortilla and rolled some ground beef in it while calling it a burrito. Anyone that would be persuaded by that naming ought to find this restaurant a worthy place for their next "Mexican" eatery.
