In concept, Barbacoa is similar to the not-too-far-away Cafe Rio and Costa Vida, but with a different philosophy on Mexican food. Like Cafe Rio and Costa Vida, Barbacoa is an up-scale, order-and-build-at-the-counter fast food chain in a nice, comfortable, well-decorated environment. Both Cafe Rio and Costa Vida, however, load up their food with salsas and various extras, while Barbacoa keeps things relatively simple. For example a burrito at the other two places is often a casserole of ingredients verging on being a bit soupy. A similar meal at Barbacoa is firmer, simpler, wrapped tightly in aluminum foil and totally capable of being eaten without utensils. Personally, I like Barbacoas food better, but others seemingly dont agree. When Cafe Rio is packed with people, Barbacoa, about a mile away, can be nearly empty. Id give this location four stars if it werent for the socially awkward and work-averse adolescents who seem to be running the place whenever I visit. The last time I ordered ahead on their website, the kids running the store hadnt even bothered to start on the order before I arrived a half hour later — despite the restaurant being mostly empty. I got blank stares when I said Id come to pick up my online order. After a few seconds, they mumbled to each other, grunted a few unintelligible words in my direction while avoiding eye contact, then proceeded to fill the order with no explanation or acknowledgement of the delay. Yeah, I know adolescents can be like this, and its not a big deal. Still, Barbacoa could benefit from having better restaurant managers in charge, like a responsible adult.

Always go to this place and is usually good. Went there this last Sunday and the food was not good nor fresh. I actually got sick later that day. They had a bunch of kids working in there that were rude and incompetent. My order was incorrect so I asked them to fix it. Instead of apologizing and fixing it they said its not what you ordered. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. On top of that they had a bunch of their friends in the restaurant bs with them. How unprofessional! ! I hope the manager of the store reads this and does something about the employees he has working there. I will not be going back to this place

I guess I could give it a 5 too, perhaps. Nothing wrong with anything. I recommend the lime rice. Although I ordered the Three Amigos (I think thats what it was called) with chicken, I think they considered that a chicken bowl. Whatever I received was great and with the same ingredients I asked for, so I was happy. There were a lot of us, and handled with seemingly smooth ease. Absolutely ecstatic about their gluten free precautions and ALL gluten free menu except for tortillas and enchiladas.

Love going to this Barbacoa while my bike is being worked on across the way at Millcreek Bicycles. I usually get a wrapped taco! You gotta try it. Its a hardshell taco with a soft tortilla wrapped on the outside held together with melted cheese, then all the good stuff on the inside you want. Fair pricing, fast service, and the best tasting food of its kind. I think it beats out the Rio!

Barabacoas glory days have passed, when they had top quality ingredients and only a few locations. The food is still good but doesnt compare to what theyve been. I would recommend a burrito or tacos and the honey sweet pork.

I liked the food. The hot sauce actually had some heat to it, which was good. The only problem was the flies. Flies everywhere. There were at least a half dozen buzzing around my table. They apparently like the food, too.

This place was fine. Food was good. Price ($7.50) for large burrito was very good. Employees were quite low key but straight forward. It just isnt quite as good or any different from Chipotle or Cafe Rio

The food is fine but this location never seems to get it right & are always trying to nickel & dime you for everything. Perhaps trying to compete with the much tastier cafe rio near by.

Salads are ok. Burritos and tacos are the better bet. Staff is always friendly with clean facilities. Fireplace in the winter, keeps it cozy. Patio in the summee keeps it breezy.

It took 35 minutes for me to get through the line. And there were only 4 people ahead of me. Felt like I was at the DMV - slow and unresponsive.

Everything always tastes fresh and the staff are generally friendly. Sometimes there is a bit if a wait during lunch, but it is worth it to me!

I loved this place but they made the hot sauce TOO HOT! I have been coming here sin ce the first mid- Holladay store opened. Bye Barbacoa!

Do not go here for a quesadilla... go to costa or cafe rio, but for a burrito it definitely competes well.

Nachos for the win. The queso sauce give it that perfect uniqueness. A uniqueness I wish I could bath in.
