My husband had an important meeting yesterday, with a potential business partner- for his next construction renovations. His projects are property improvements, to exactly the types of dwellings for which college towns are known...and - more often than not, are valued into the millions. He asked me to use my thorough (and PARTICULAR) skills to find a place - in San Marcos, a halfway point between their offices. He finished, "a coffee shop." I asked him if this place might need to be: clean, open, and light, with space- enough for a sense of privacy, with good coffee, maybe with light food, friendly customers, & attentive service?" "YES!" I went on, "Are you looking for something with some character, too, and may be- some positive energy for which San Marcos is known?" "EXACTLY!" I had this "elephant" feeling, but could not play "god" with his career: ..."NOT - Starbucks." "YES! NOT Starbucks!" "OH! Not too far, or hard to find, from I-35!" Then he left. 15 min later, I sent him all the info. Upon his return, after a 3+ hour visit, I asked whether it was what he wanted, although, secretly, I was sure that i had, easily, made a 3-point basket, w/o net. "It was perfect!" Good answer, Husband. And - THANK YOU, to my young Yelp-using friends, your reviews, & fabulous pictures!

This is my favorite coffee shop in San Marcos. What I appreciate most about a coffee shop is of course good espresso and spacious atmosphere. This coffee shop has both! When I say good espresso I mean you get what you pay for, which is good in my book! The patio has a lot of space so those who dont like the smell of cigarettes can enjoy the fresh air. They dont have the best baristas, but they like what theyre doing and again you get what you pay for. I would say though if you dont like loud music, I wouldnt suggest going in the evening, but in the morning its not so loud. Also check out their unique bottled beer selection!

If you are looking for a place to study on a nice sunday evening, and you enjoy studying with loud obnoxious music blaring in your ears then try Wake The Dead. Every time I decide to give this place a try, Im reminded why I dont enjoy studying here, I cant hear myself think!! What kind of customers are we catering to here? Coffee drinking ravers? Last time I checked there were many of them, and I have yet to see any here so please, for the love of the study gods, turn down the music (especially outside), and watch the place fill up with coffee drinking collegiate students!!

For all you visiting Washingtonians who have resorted to drinking Starbucks because its the closest thing to good coffee you can find... You must try Wake The Dead. The coffee is strong, you can tell when they put flavorings in and they steam the milk without burning it. My only complaint is that there is one employee who seems to get a bit overwhelmed and when he does, he borders on rude. Most of the employees are very nice, the atmosphere is great and the art gives you something to look at instead of the back of the baristas head.

FAVORITE of all my coffee shops in the area! Not just because of the amazing goth/artsy decor, but also the flavor of their coffee, its always made perfectly. Service is always fast, there are nice handmade gifts to buy, a cozy outdoor seating area, and plenty of places to sit inside. Good kolaches! Usually they have a gluten-free treat as well, though all their baked goods are a bit pricey. I really enjoy the atmosphere!

Went here because it looked cool. I was instantly met with hostility when I walked in the door. As I was reading the coffee selections on the wall the hipster barista angrily handed me a food menue. It was a very, buy our stuff or get out type feeling. So, I bought a coffee and a scone and tipped 15%. Later, I found out the barista charged me twice. $11 total for a medium cup of coffee and a scone. I wont be going back.

This was my FAVORITE place to study while living in San Marcos. I have gone back many times since I graduated. The shop is so inviting and eclectic and the epitome of college town coffee house. The art on the walls is all by local artists. The tables and chairs are a collection of odds and ends. The staff is friendly and goofy. The food and coffee is excellent. This place will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Wake the Dead is an established San Marcos culture haven. I have heard beautiful poetry, transcendental melodies, whispers from figures in captivating paintings and, of course, the most invigorating and intelligent conversations. The coffee is exquisite, perhaps the best in town. Jumping Mouse ftw! and lastly, but not leastly, the staff are always on point: helpful, kind, responsive.

I went today to study there with some friends. Five minutes after I got there, they were already hounding me asking if I was going to buy something. Im not a free loader. I know that if Im going to use their internet and space, I need to buy something, just give me a feaking second to do it. They made me feel so uncomfortable that Im never coming back.

My girlfriend and I go here a couple times a week. It has a hipster feel to it (which Im not big on) but the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They also have a huge beer selection if you want something to do in the evening. We typically go early in the morning and play ping pong while we have some coffee before work. Would strongly recommend!

My favorite coffee house in town. Theres always things going on here in the evenings. Staff is great and the atmosphere is both cozy and laid back. Outdoor seating is pleasant when weather allows. The garden is well landscaped and the artwork mixed in with the plants are great. Also? The Mexican jumping mouse coffee is the best! Just sayin...

Locally owned, a hub for artists, writers, film makers & musicians With a great staff, all the coffee/espresso/tea one could ask for(+sweet baked things), good beer & wine, awesome outdoor seating, cozy indoor pockets and everything else youd expect from a small college town coffee house.

The finest coffee shop in Central Texas. I have been coming here off and on for 12 years and this coffee shop has consistently delivered -- good coffee, exceptional service, and the most comfortable garden patio in San Marcos. Come by and enjoy a cup of joe with Jack!!!!

The coffee here fluctuates from good to great, but what it lacks in coffee it makes up with character. This place usually has sassy baristas and channels witty humor with a welcoming vibe. I love going here; try it for yourself and you may have a new go-to shop.

Went in for coffee, left with a bad taste in my mouth. Got my order wrong and sent me packing. Also, the kolaches and tacos are made elsewhere and sit around all morning until theyre stale. So, bad service and bad food, but decent coffee if theyll give it to you.
