Ive eaten Chinese food from around the United States, and I dont know what the deal is, but Chinese food in the Valley is just plain bad wherever you go, and House of China is no exception. I would pay a few extra dollars for something that I actually enjoyed eating. The egg drop soup was inedible. The egg roll tasted like one of the imitation microwave knockoffs that you pick up on sale, and the entree - beef with broccoli - was just awful. I almost had to hold my nose while I ate it. The meat tasted old, it only had 3-4 heads of broccoli scattered through it, and the sauce was some sort of some unsavory medley that was, well, just gross. At House of China, and several other local Chinese restaurants, I have come across a unique problem. Not only does the food taste leftover from last night, it seems to have gotten "mixed" accidentally with other dishes. In this case, it was as though the beef and broccoli had some seafood notes in it. I am completed miffed at how you manage something like that. It seems if you add some spices to dog food it will sell locally. So maybe the management knows their clientèle well. Maybe their standards are the ones that are low and it brings down the curve for everyone else. The standards are low not only at House of China, but at the other RGV Chinese restaurants as well. About the only positive thing I could say is - it was cheap. I only paid about $6.50 for the visit. But canned Alpo is also cheap, and I dont buy that too often. I wouldnt go back. I wouldnt feed it to my dog. I guess thats just one mans humble opinion.

Es la primera y la ultima!!! Llegamos a las 3:30pm al lugar y la persona que nos recibió no se su nombre pero era una gorda amargada nos recibió de mal manera y nos cobro por mi hija de 1año. Ya en la mesa todo estuvo mejor. Nuestro mesero José nos atendió muy bien hasta que llego el cambio de turno nos mandaron a otro mesero que nos quiso hacer un cargo extra por que ya eran las 4 y la cena era mas cara. Que no mamen! Yo soy mesero y se de servicio y en primera si un mesero tiene una mesa atendiendo no o deben de cortar si no hasta que se valla su mesa. Al menos nos o hubieran explicado al llegar hubiera estado bien; pero cuando ya estábamos comiendo. No! Eso es hechar a perder nuestra comida!!!!!

I was looking for a nice little non-buffet Chinese restaurant where we could celebrate Chinese New Years today but found HOC instead. Its not bad for a buffet and Im starting to think that non-buffet Chinese restaurants are a thing of the past. HOC is more like House of Mexico but at least the wait staff was friendly and the hostess knew it was New Years. The chica at the grill couldnt speak much English but she was friendly and cooked up a mean Chinese grill. They even had squid ready to cook up. If youre looking for a small, inexpensive, and not bad buffet, HOC is the place. They even have a 10% senior discount but you have to ask. The ice cream bar is well stocked with a decent array of flavors, and the restrooms are clean and tidy.

If you like buffets, this place is for you. You pay on exit instead of entry and are seated immediately. Youre free to get your food and start chowing down at your leisure. The food is fresh and tasty and I always saw food trays being swapped out. The staff was extremely courteous and there was a manager constantly watching the food area and willing to answer any questions we had. As far as buffets go, their selection might not be as varied as those found in larger restaurants, but the quality of the food they do have is stupendous and the staff is extremely friendly. Would absolutely recommend.

If I had a dollar for every chinese buffet Ive tried in Houston (restaurant capitol of America) then I could probably buy House of China but, eating there once a week will have to do. Ive tried those big fancy Chinese buffets, which are more like an endless t.v. dinner, and I always go back to H.O.C. The have THE BEST hot and sour soup Ive ever tasted. The rest of the food there is your typical frozen-reheated quisine, but its still the best frozen-reheated chinese buffet in McAllen. For a $5.96 lunch buffet, IT RAWKS!

Do not bother wasting your hard-earned money on this over priced mediocre restaurant! The staff were talking about me right behind my back. "That girl is not eating a thing" yeah because it tastes WEAK. Get your s*** together. NEVER returning to this restaurant. And neither should anyone else. Hope the staff and John mf Sun enjoys my review as much as I enjoyed my dinner. Ta ta.

Ive never actually stepped inside, so I cant say anything about the service or atmosphere, but the food is ok for the price. I didnt like that 70% of my entrée was celery. The rice doesnt have flavor. So basically I only order General Chow with Lo Mein. Only thing that I like from the menu.

I had a terrible experience there, I went there today at 4pm and the there was no cow meat & only like 1 pork meat& the sushi was simple & dry. The manager was oblivious of my concern and it seemed like she could barely know how to apologize. first time & last time going, wasted my money.

Overheard the owner, or who seemed to be the owner, insulting his employees and the food made my wife as well as my 13 year old daughter sick, made me a little nausea as well. The only bright part was the service, the waiters and waitresses seemed pretty friendly and were very attentive.

I got one plate, worst food ever. I informed the sever that the food was rancid and tea taste like dirt water. He informed me after talking to his manager they wouldnt charge me for my tea, but i was responsible for the plate. I think it goes with out saying never ever again!

Place closes at 10 pm ,when we got there at 9 pm they were removing and getting Rid of the food,I asked I asked Dont you close at 10 and there were like yes ,so I said well WTF Why are you removing the food????? They looked at me like I was Crazy....

My husband and I drove from Weslaco to McAllen for this and we did not appreciate the writing on our to go plates. I understand writing my order down on my plate but keep it professional. This writing was very unnecessary. Photo in restaurants gallery.

Surprisingly small and incredibly overcrowded on the weekends. However, food is definitely specially tasty and cooked in small portions. A bit pricy for the few available options but again taste is what matters here. Great food, just avoid the weekend.
