I took DKs sushi class at his North Lamar/2222 market this weekend and I had an absolute ball. Anyone whos been to his South First restaurant on a Monday night knows the guy has a great sense of humor and it totally translates into his class. I was lucky enough to have a very small class size (three of us), but he limits the class to six, and has two overhead cameras/tvs so everyone sees everything hes teaching, and he walks around to help with additional instruction on a personal level often. We learned how to make several different rolls. He would start out by making the roll, emphasizing things to stop and check and pointers on what makes a good roll. Then we all would make our own. He would sprinkle the class with jokes and stories, encouragement and teasing (in a good way...). We all were encouraged to eat as much of our creations as we wanted and even so, I came away with a full plate of sushi/sashimi that my husband gladly gobbled down when I got home. He taught knife skills, specifically to how to cut the fish for each version (sushi, sashimi, etc.) and roll cutting. He also showed us some really great pointers on how to make sashimi presentation dazzle (Im not telling) and ideas on presentation at a party without breaking the bank. About mid-way through the class, he opened a bottle of sake and we all partook - a wonderful, fruity cream sake. I loved it. The couple with me were on a date and I think it was a great way to "do something" other than a movie/dinner. Plus, since it was in the afternoon, it wasnt quite the pressure of a night date, but a little nicer than a lunch/coffee date. The class is two hours long, but the time flew by. Its $65, but believe me the amazing fish he pulled out for us was at least that, and like I said, I ate until I was full and still took home enough that my husband couldnt even finish. I had a really great time, learned a lot, and got some wonderful sushi and sake to boot! Thank you, DK, for a really fun and informative Saturday afternoon.

Im so confused about how this place gets such good reviews. Maybe it is because Im sober or never really liked karoke? I went in earlier this week with a friend and saw while we were in time for the lunch special (ends at 2:30 pm), we wanted some sashimi and rolls instead. We got an order of tempura appetizer, yellow tail sashimi, tuna sashimi, a roll I cant remember, and a dragon roll. Our sashimi was barely ok. It was probably the thinnest slice of fish they could get away with and edging on being almost room temperature. It was only slightly cold. My piece of yellowtail was so thin that the fish came apart between the meat so the rice was exposed. For the love of god do not order the $13+ dragon roll. I was so disappointed with how skinny and unimpressive it was. Not even worth half its cost. By far, the biggest regret made here. Our appetizer came last -which doesnt make sense but I could care less because we were starving. Our two pieces of shrimp were fine but its the vegetables that I was super pissed about. They made a nest of stringy vegetables. If you had a friend that didnt like onions or a particular vegetable, good luck separating any of it. The worst part of it was the vegetables were obviously from frozen and meant for the fried rice that they also offer on the menu. I didnt try any of the korean food they offered here. Although the service was fine, it was obvious this was a ma and pa place because after the guy was done with our order, he was playing on his phone and walked out the restaurant. I honestly didnt look at him much because he was wearing a fleece jacket and I didnt want to know if he had washed his hands or not. We wont return and are still on the search for a new sushi place in South Austin.

My husband and I love sushi and heard this was an unusual and fun place to go. Our sushi was decent. It was nowhere near the best weve had (Maiko, Mikado, and Uchi leave this place in the dust for not much more money). But we were seated quickly and the service was kind. We were looking forward to a fun night. Then the proprietor and MC of the karaoke portion of the evening came in. Within his 5 to 10 minute monologue, I heard the foulest, crassest and most demeaning language I have heard in many years. It was as if he had distilled american pie, porkys revenge, and the worst kind of boys locker room talk into a revolting and vile mishmash. I couldnt believe any woman (or man for that matter) stayed for the verbal sexual abuse that was spewing from this mans mouth. I felt like I needed a shower after leaving dk sushi. Utterly disgusting. We paid our bill as soon as we could get our waitress attention and left immediately. We will never ever be going back. I noticed another review by a woman who was groped and had her dress pulled up by this man. After the things we heard tonight, this doesnt surprise me in the least. I hope I can spare you a similar experience.

While waiting for food to arrive I noticed a camera was pointed at my face, so everyone in the restaurant could watch me eat on a large screen near the entrance!!! Also, I was informed that it was karaoke night which sounded fun, however, before karaoke even started a man behind the sushi bar blasted disco music the entire time we were there. It was so loud I couldnt even hear my partner who was not even an arm lengths away from me! We were so uncomfortable we ate our food as quickly as possible just to get out of there..it was impossible to have a conversation and forget about calling a waitress over...she cant hear you over the music! The sushi rolls were extremely small, warm and badly rolled. They looked like they had been smashed and since they were so skimpy you couldnt even taste what the roll was!!!! The tempura was alright...but then again, how do you mess up tempura. Horrible atmosphere, uncomfortable setting and poor sushi...It was a horrible, horrible experience. I will never set foot there again!

I think the reviews written are from the same person or a collective group of people writing for the resturant giving the same rating. The restaurant is pretty non-descriptive. There is no sign on the building saying its a DK Sushi restaurant. Heres what I think... the rice is terrible. Its soggy. It basically ruins the meal. Rice is integral to Japanese cuisine and if they cant cook it right, then how can I possibly enjoy it? The seaweed sheet used to roll sushi has an overwhelming flavor that basically covers up the delicate taste of fish. Its too thick. The fish itself thats resting on beds of rice - its not that bad. It left no fishy taste nor emitted fishy odor so the fish is pretty fresh. The fishs good enough and I removed fish from rice since rice is not good at all. Service is good. Nice waitress. The price is reasonable. I had sushi for lunch so I dont know about dinner prices. Hardly an excellent restaurant.

Were still pretty new to Austin, so there are still many places to try, but so far Seoul Restaurant/DK Sushi is our favorite restaurant. It doesnt look like much from the outside, but its cozy on the inside with cute seating areas. The service is good, and I like how they greet you when you come in. The best part is the food. We order something different every time, and always several things, in order to try as much as possible. Nothing has disappointed us. The mackerel was a bit pricey for the portion, but whatever, its Austin. Overall though, the food tastes fresh and home-made with love. Though the sushi is good, I think the Korean fare is my favorite. I love the little side dishes!
