My review isnt so much about the food as it is the service: horrible. First off, I ordered an IPA (Citrocity) and the bartender had the nerve to say, "You know thats an IPA, right?" That alone should have been a signal for me to get up and leave, but I wanted to try the BBQ. I also wanted to try - and PAY FOR - a side of brisket, this guy was like, "Oh no we cant do that, theres no way to sell the brisket as a side". So I ordered the beer and a BBQ pulled pork combo. $15. I gave my card and a $5 bill to the bartender. I meant to pay for the bill with my card and then have the $5 bill broken down into ones. Nope. That bartender once again had the nerve to assume and take my $5 as a tip. I dont tip $5 for a $15 bill. This is a Wednesday afternoon. Theres nobody in there. Hes not exactly providing any sort of entertainment value or striking up a conversation. Hes at the other end of the bar watching the baseball game and being as inattentive and possible without making it obvious that he really doesnt want to be there. Why he thought for ONE second Id give him a $5 tip is beyond me. He was going to get my normal $3 and to be honest he didnt deserve that. So, between him assuming I had no clue as to what sort of beer I was ordering and then also assuming he was getting well over a 20% tip for absolutely nothing, I wont visit this place again. Major buzz kill.

My initial impression was poor. I saw catfish in more than one place on the menu only to be told they no longer serve catfish. Whats the point in having it on the menu that Im currently looking at?! If theyre too cheap or lazy (because what good business owner would permit that for any other reason?) to update their menu, then what else would they half-ass? However, I was with my co-workers and they love it there, so I decided to dismiss this and figured the food will speak for itself. I could not have been more wrong!! Everything I ordered was bland. More like food I would expect from a cafeteria instead of a restaurant. Its an extremely poor excuse for Carolina BBQ and I personally dont think it should be advertised as BBQ at all. So if you just want different types of meat, but not good Carolina BBQ, this is the place. It also helps is you have no sense of taste...its the same experience. The only reason this got 2 stars instead of 1 is because I got parking right at the front door and the inside was very inviting.

We discovered Wholly Smokin BBQ while passing through South Carolina on vacation. After reading the reviews and speaking with our hotel concierge we chose to eat dinner here and it did not disappoint. The server was very knowledgeable and one of the owners, Bill, stopped by our table and gave us a short history of the restaurant. All pleasantries aside, the food was fantastic! The ribs, brisket and pulled pork were moist and full of flavor. The sauces and our side orders of mixed veggies, sweet potato fries and lima beans were just as good. After checking on us a second time we told the owner that our only regret is that we dont live closer!

Sorry I Stopped
The food was very good and I was anxious to go back on my next trip. Unfortunately, after getting home I realized my receipt was incorrect and included alcohol. When I called to correct this, not only did the owner not sound sincere in her empathy, she did not make the transaction easy. My corp Amex showed alcohol purchased on it. So the receipt was refunded back, but then I had to give my CC info over the phone to pay for the right bill. A courtesy lunch, discount, something should have been offered for the inconvenience of all this. But it wasnt. For that reason, I will not return.

Loved the food and the inside Dont be put off by the area. It was a little strange as the whole area seems like most of the stores are empty, ant the outside of Whooly doesnt look like much. The inside is very nice, they have all local SC beers on tap, and the barbecue was the best weve had in years. The burnt ends, the ribs, the pulled pork, spicy barbecue beans. All awesome. We sampled everything and couldnt pick out the best protein. To start with, they had flash fried oysters, which were perfect. Plus the server was very friendly and helpful.

Came to Florence from Conway with my brother and my wife to do some shopping . Wanted supper afterwards and the chain restaurants were busy. Googled bbq restaurants and picked this one because it sounded local type place. From walking in the door we were blown away!!! Menu sounded great, we all got something different to share around the table. What a wonderful meal!!! During the 1 hour drive home all we could talk about was how good our dinner was. We will be coming back and bringing friends and family

I had the three meat sampler with pulled pork, spare ribs and bbq chicken. And spicy bbq beans and loaded baked potato salad as sides. The food was great and they have four or five sauces to choose from that are equally tasty. Very nice atmosphere with an artsy/country style. There were some interesting wall art pieces I think were made from pallets but very cool. Finally, the sweet tea was perfect!

If you are staying in one of the motels out by the interstate, do yourself a huge favor and drive downtown for this place. Ribs had an excellent rub and were very meaty. My wife had a chicken and rice dish called chicken bog platter. She loved it. Factor in a decent wine list plus local craft beers on tap and this place is a real winner! Timothy took very good care of us too.

Weve eaten at a lot of bbq places and this food is excellent....best weve tasted so far! We had the pulled pork, chicken bog and the spicy Mac n cheese and it was delicious. You can taste the love and passion that goes into the food. Our server was attentive, helpful and provided suggestions to us. Highly recommend and so glad we stopped here on our road trip!

Cool atmosphere. Nice beer selection. I had the pulled pork with vegetables and spicy mac and cheese. The pork was moist and flavorful. The vege medley included zucchini, squash, onion, red pepper. Spicy mac was cheesy and bacon deliciousness. Loved the downtown location was great. Driving from Melbourne, FL to Lynchburg, VA.

I love ribs & to find a place that has the best Ive ever tasted is unreal. I usually stick to same restaurant until I find something better. My new love is this place. I wanted to order mashed potatoes with my order, but was told I could not is the only reason for the 4 star. All staff was pleasant and attentive.
