Meat and beer. These are two things that Smokey Oak does very well! Over 45 craft beers will satisfy even your choicest beer snob. The meats Ive tried (ribs, wings, smoked turkey) all tender and flavorful. I cant complain about the meat and beer, but sadly everything else REALLY falls short. The compliment to these delicious meats is bland, flat, tasteless sides that seem like an after thought. The fried okra was limp and without flavor. The cornbread (which should be the staple of any good BBQ place) is chewy and way too sweet. The Mac and Cheese was dried and hard around the edges, like it had sat too long. And the chili, my friend considered in inedible. Oh and dont get me started about the cole slaw. Look, Smokey Oak has a good thing going here, but some how I feel they lack the effort to really make things great. So come for the meat and the beer, and pass on the sides.

we went today at 3:30, Full bar 3/4 full dining area, still seated immediately.only 2 off us.Service was great. mentioned we were out of state and looking for some sights to see downtown Charleston, as busy as she was,she took time to google a few sites and a address I could put in our GPS. Now the food is the best Ive had down here in SC. Every place highly rated around Santee SC has been greatly over rated. this is the first weve found that we felt as good as Goode and co in Houston, We had their large sample platter for $36 and was enough left over for dinner. Though we still had to try the chili so a double order to go, no gringo chili with beans either. Best chicken, moist, smokey flavor, tender. Now the down side ,they dont have any place near home, with their craft beer selection,it would take me months to work through the ever growing list.

Mannnnnn!!! Dem ribs though! There was a perfect bark (crust) on the ribs, a thorough smokey flavor, and they were fall off the bone tender! All the sauces were amazing, and the wings were delicious too. Theres a large gluten free selection available, and a large "build your own" Bloody Mary bar. I got collard greens as a side and they were also really good; tender with lots of flavor, BUT they were sweet (maybe brown sugar?), which I did not care for. All in all, this is the place to be for BBQ, beer, and a flavor explosion in your face!

We went there for half price hamburgers. ONLY the burger itself was half price, which saved us $2.75 per burger. Oh, you want cheese? Thatll be $1.25. Oh, you want mushrooms? Thatll be .75. Oh, you want fries? Thatll be $2.75. When the burgers came they were overcooked and the fries and onion rings were cold. The service was quite slow although they were not busy. To top it all off, I left my credit card and picked it up the next day from the bartender and there was fraud on my card immediately after the charge from Smoky Oak.

Great place to eat on James Island, especially for a big group. They also have a convenient takeout pickup off the side of the main building where they sell ice cream. Food is great and I personally like the Thunderbird sandwich. The ribs are good and the barbecue is on point. Decently priced and a cool place to eat with sports on the televisions. I dont drink, but there is a bar and outdoor seating, so feel free to bring your dog!

Absolutely the FINEST ribs I have ever had!!! Plus...my Texan husband has FINALLY found a brisket served here that meets his exacting standards (after 30y in SC!). Ate here 2 weeks ago with a big group while racing in CHYC Open Regatta - an excellent dining experience with their fine staff. We are headed to Charleston on business this afternoon and this is my only MUST EAT HERE request for lunch tomorrow.

Loved it! Great atmosphere, especially for a Sunday night. Drinks were flowing inside, at the bar, and on the porch. Very low-key/casual hangout spot. Food - We had a sampler of 50 wings with different sauces (good). Ribs were great. Served dry with many different sauces to choose from. Cant wait to try a burger next time...there *will* be a next time. Great rustic, casual, delish dining experience.

On March 17 our group of 22 had dinner and drinks there. They went out of their way to serve us. The meals were excellent and our server (Dana) did a fantastic job! They even provided Citronella Candles and spray as we were sitting outside and the No-See-Ums were having a feast. If you’re in the area I would highly recommend them.

Visited for the first time yesterday with a local and Canadian high school rugby teams. We had over 50 people and they were SO ACCOMODATING! They new we were coming, but we had more people than anticipated. The BBQ, beef brisket, mac & cheese, and sweet potato fries were amazing! Our waitress, Maggie, was awesome...

The best spot in the place by far is by the bug zapper. Not only do the flies entertain you, but they provide the basis for a ridiculous drinking game. The beer was "good" and the food was good for my fatneck. The service was great, Im pretty sure that the waitress would have fed me grapes off the stem had I asked.

I enjoyed our food thoroughly! The chili was absolutely delicious and if you dont get it with the whole shebang you didnt do it right. I had a fantastic Margarita and our server was patient with our 4 kids. Its always nice to find a place that is willing to accommodate, and be patient with all of our children.

Fantastic food. 45 beers on tap. Great service, asked the waitress two questions about the menu, one she had to ask the chef, she was great about it. The pulled pork has an excellent smoky flavor, got a pizza with bacon, goat cheese and roasted tomatoes, it was fantastic. Definitely check this place out.

Service is horrible. Waitress was only concerned about catering to her table full of men. Took about 15 minutes for a waitress to even talk to us. She wasnt even our waitress, but she felt bad because we were being ignored by the one who was supposed to serve us. We finally just left. Never again.

This is the best BBQ in Charleston. Dont listen to anyone else, Smoky Oak is where the good food is at! Everything on the menu is great; Ive never had a bad meal in 7 years. Dry rub ribs are great, pulled pork a must, even the quesadillas are worth it! Awesome beer selection as wel.

The food is good. But beware of the overserved drunken hillbillies who frequent this bar. If you like to hang out with drunken fools then this is your place from 7pm on... Watch out for macho rednecks who pick fights after their endless shots. No security for the drunks, heads up!

Consistently great food. Great atmosphere for regulars and newbies alike. Always ask for the specials as they are usually fantastic. The beef rib platter on Friday nights are out of this world. Great friendly staff. Perfect neighborhood place to eat and drink.
