My wife and I struck gold by accident. We were pulling a u-turn in a dreary plaza on the opposite side of Reservoir Ave when we saw the warmly lit blue Ebisu canopy set back on Pontiac Ave. Having lived off-and-on in Japan and dined at all of the RI Japanese restaurants, we stopped by for a take out menu and look, and we were struck by the relaxing atmosphere and charming decor -- accented lighting, warm wall colors, inviting booths, subtle artwork (including a framed beautiful floral white kimono), and soft Japanese pop music. The menu also looked intriguing with several authentic Japanese dishes that are hard to find on Japanese restaurant menus in the States (especially in Rhode Island). We stopped back for dinner the following weekend and werent disappointed. Again, we were impressed by the variety of reasonably priced dishes on the menu. For appetizers we ordered Chuka Salad (seaweed salad) and Tako Wasabi (raw calimari in wasabi sauce). Both were authentic Japan -- if not better -- and reminded us of the warm wonderful meals we shared in izakayas in the narrow alleyways of suburban Tokyo. For the main course we shared Katsu Don (fried breaded pork topped with egg custard) and Yasai Curry (vegetable curry). Both were out of this world -- again like we were stepping back into JapanI! The pork was soft and tender, the yasai curry warm and subtly spicy with fresh asparagus, yam, squash, carrots, onions, etc. There were so many other tempting dishes on the menu and we look forward to returning. The green tea creme brulee we ordered for dessert was heavenly -- worth the trip just for that alone. Our waitress told us that the restaurant had just opened three months ago, and were strongly rooting for it to succeed. Finally, a little bit of Japan right here in Rhode Island...

Absolutely my favorite Japanese restaurant! Their choice of dishes range between traditional meal sets, to savory ramen soups, stuff on sticks (robatayaki) cooked over charcoal grill, to street vendor food like takoyaki (think of fluffy clam cake, less dense and less oil, but with octopus inside) topped with tonkatsu sauce and Japanese mayo, a whole surame squid grilled with ponzu sauce, etc. I could go on about the dishes and the quality of the food, which is always superb. Staff is attentive, polite and very knowledgeable on all the dishes. Excellent selection of sake and fusion inspired cocktails. Prices here could not be any cheaper. Tapas range between $4- $8, meal sets in mid teens. I encourage everyone to try this restaurant as your first experience certainly shall not me your last. Its not just all about sushi, you know.

Truly a hidden gem! 6 of us came to taste the flavor Ebisu had to offer and none of us had been there before. Amazing! The service is excellent. We ordered 4 appetizers: Gyoza, Gyu Tataki, Tako Yaki and a special- a pork belly bun. Each one has wonderful flavor and the Gyu Tataki is an absolute must try! Some of the dishes ordered: Nakasaki Champon- omg.. delicious!, Miso Ramen, Tori Yakisoba and Seafood Yakisoba- not one complaint. Everyone tried each others dishes and each one had depth of flavor. The sake and beer selection is great - we had no room for dessert though. Will return! You will regret not trying this hidden restaurant.

Fantastic. Friendly staff excellent healthy food with gluten free and vegan options and clean and with a clean bathroom, which is to me a good sign. This is a young family owned restaurant. I didnt realize I was speaking to one of the owners but she is very friendly and genuinely cares about her family maybe this mention means nothing to some, but others will understand. The area around the restaurant isnt beautiful, but this truly is a gem. $10 lunch, $5 saki at a place this good is worth the travel. I am super picky about restaurants, I trust that you will enjoy a fairly priced, healthy stop with delicious food.

My husband and I went here because the menu had hot pot. We are new to the area and this place got great reviews, but when we got there it did not seem as good as the reviews before me had said it to be. The staff, or lack there of might be the better word for it, was very slow. There was no bartender or host, just one waitress for the whole place. The food was not very good. The portions were small and we got not even a whole pot of soup and when we requested for more we came to find that there was an extra cost for more soup. This was by far the worst restaurant I had ever been to and will not go back.

Delicious! I loved the tapas options, I can never decide with appetizer I want and this made it so I can have lots of them! I ordered the Nabeyaki(sp?) and it was delicious and came with tempura! Although the waitress thought I had ordered the Nagasaki she apologized and offered to refill my Lychee Martini for free as compensation when she brought the wrong meal. She really was very attentive of us (even helping us take a group photo!) even though it was clearly swamped. The sake is to die for, I had about 3 of the Lychee Martinis! Great place to bring friends who want to try some real ramen.

Hands down my favorite place to go for lunch. Everything I have eaten has been excellent. The lunch menu includes an entre, a side, and an appetizer all for the price of a full size deli sandwhich. The duck soup is outstanding. Crispy brussel sprouts, chuka salad, edamame, steamed shrimp dumplings, fried pork dumplings, japanese curry, whats not to love. Friendly and beautiful asian waitress rounds out the experience for me. I will be back weekly from here on out.

This is the place I bring everyone who visits me in Providence. The food is excellent and theres a huge variety. Big fan of the asparagus wrapped in bacon and their chicken wings, but Ive eaten half the menu and have never tried something I didnt love. The tapas-style menu is my favorite, but the noodles are good too. Shabu Shabu is fun, but not the tastiest item on the menu. I usually end up ordering four or five things every time I go. Love, love, love Ebisu.

9 times out of 10, food is great. Some of the best Japanese curry Ive had outside of Japan. Sometimes, though, it seems that someone else prepared the curry, and the flavor is completely different. When they have cold noodles on their monthly specials, its worth ordering. The spicy udon is also great. Gyoza are great, but the order is too small. I could eat 20 of them, but that would be too painful on my wallet.

This has been one of my favorite Japanese restaurants since I discovered it a few years ago. Love the shabu (I usually get the tom yum broth with lamb), but the garlic chili edamame is to die for if you like spicy foods! Its not over the top spicy, but has a really complex taste with pepper oil, garlic and Japanese 7 spice. Best Asian food appetizer anywhere!!!

Ebisu is some of the most unique food you are going to find in Providence, and the experience overall was wonderful. Service was very slow, however, and we felt like no one was ever coming around to us. Dinner took two and a half hours. The food, however, was worth it, and Im sure it was just an off night.
