Brookline sushi restaurant on short leash following health inspection By John Hilliard/staff writer Wicked Local Brookline Posted Apr 28, 2010 @ 01:56 PM Brookline — A Washington street sushi restaurant faces costlier license fees and additional inspections after Brookline health officials found last month that eating the food posed a threat to diners. “Conditions are so filthy that it presents a threat to [the] public to consume food coming out of the kitchen,” according to a March 25 Health Department inspection report of Yokohama. Yokohama, at 238 Washington St., was closed on March 25 following a routine health inspection of the restaurant, but was allowed to reopen later that day after a second inspection. According to the inspector’s report, food debris and grease were found throughout the restaurant; no sanitizer was prepared to clean equipment; an ice machine was broken; and food was being stored at improper temperatures. The inspector also found syringes, pills and other personal items stored in the kitchen. The TAB found the incident as part of a review of recent restaurant inspections conducted by the Board of Health. Patrick J. Maloney, chief of environmental health for the Health Department, said it’s rare for an inspector to close down a restaurant. “For an inspector to close down [an establishment], it is extreme,” said Maloney, who said the inspector found the restaurant was “lax on basic sanitation” during the initial inspection. Maloney said the restaurant’s licensing fee will double, and there will be additional inspections by the Health Department. Additional violations could lead to an administrative hearing with the Board of Health. “Now they’re going to be on a short leash,” said Maloney. A manager for Yokohama could not be reached for comment. At Yokohama, the inspector wrote that water in a bathroom sink wasn’t hot enough to meet health requirements, according to the report. The report noted the restaurant was cluttered with full and empty beer cans, books and other items. “There is no surface which is not soiled with old food and debris,” according to the inspection report.

The place has a loving informal atmosphere, almost like you are a guest in a home rather than a customer. The owners and sole employees are the chef Jun and his wife, an older couple from Japan. Their back an fourth conversations are comforting while sipping tea and taking in the atmosphere. Food prep can be variable, but is always worth it. The sashimi lunch boxes are a major fav for me; miso soup, some of the best dressed salad imaginable, a bit of rice, an assortment of sashimi, and two slices of orange, all for under $10. The lunch soups are also amazing, and incredibly affordable. If youre tired of the same old Japanese restaurants from production line Wagamama to Chinese owned Americanised Japanese food, this is an excellent place to go.

An older Japanese husband and wife run this restaurant and theyre very friendly. The sushi and cooked foods are all excellent. My family and I have tried most of the items on the menu. The sushi deluxe meal is great, as is the teriyaki salmon dinner. Appetizers like tako-su (octopus with cucumbers and seaweed in vinegar) are not served at every sushi place in the area and so a treat as well. And, if you go enough times, the sushi chef remembers what you dont like, and will not include it in your meal (for example, Im not the biggest fan of egg, and so he will not put the egg sushi in my meal).

Love the homey vibe. Inside is not that big, but very cute and authentic (Japanese goods for sale). Food is great as well. The owners are very cute and seem to enjoy what they do. Dont expect the typical restaurant waiter though who is there every 5 seconds to fill your water - the place feels more like youre over at your grandmas for dinner.

Their service make you feel uncomfortable. They wont let you take the table near the window, even neither reservation for the table or few people in the restaurant. They dont serve food according which table order earlier. I dont figure out their rule even I have been there several times. But the food is good and the prices are reasonable.

This place is run by a Japanese lady and her husband (hes the cook), so they only open during selective hours, and might take a long time serving you if youre sitting down. I usually order on the phone before I go there. Their salad is amazing! The teriyaki lunch boxes are great too

Love this place! My boyfriend and I have gone here several times and everyone we bring with us also loves it! The people who own it are super sweet and the prices are sooo affordable! BYOB if youd like - for me a nice bottle of white suits the meal perfectly! A true hidden gem!

Absolutely delicious. A hidden gem. The only people working there are an elderly asian couple, so if you go there a meal can take kind of a long time if you have a large group of people. My favorite food there is the bento boxes with teriyaki beef. the sauce is SO GOOD!!!!

Easily the worst sushi experience Ive ever had. Its safe to assume the salmon came from a can and the sashimi was the most lazy assembly ever. The beef in the lunch box was also of questionable origin or else just really low quality beef. Wont ever, ever return.

The most authentic Japanese restaurant in Boston area as far as I know. Everything here is recommended. The owners are a couple and they are super nice. They always provide high quality food, clean and fresh. Sushi here is simply beautiful.

The two best dishes are the yellow tail sashimi and the avocado salad. I feel I am in Japan. An the price is very reasonable for a Japanese restaurant. The lunch boxes are really cheap for the value of what you get.

Very nice atmosphere, sushi is very well priced and well made. Note that the rolls are on the thicker side, in terms of rice and fillings, so be careful about ordering too many.

A very friendly husband and wife run this delicious neighborhood Japanese restaurant. The Sansai Udon is great, with a delicate broth and a fresh vegetal flavor.
