I would give no stars, if possible. Came in with a couple of friends. Two other groups of people followed after us, but the cashier had his eyes on us from the moment we walked in. A friend of mine had no interest in buying beer, so she just hung out by the door, on her cell phone. The cashier kept asking us, only us, asking if we needed help...following us around the tiny space, pretending to tidy up around us. When we went to pay, he asked all three of us for our IDs, including my friend who hadnt touched or even looked at any beer. We are all 23 years old with valid state IDs, but its the principle. I told him that only two of us were at the register with beer in hand, trying to pay and he said it was "state law". I attempted to inquire further about said law, when he snatched the beers out of my hand and went to put them away. I am not sure if it was because my friend was Muslim, or because we were all African American, or if it was because this poor cashier was upset for having gone bald so prematurely and was far below the average height for an American male (can we say Napoleon complex?). But we were definitely profiled and treated very poorly from the moment we walked in. No worries, Fresh Grocer has a beer garden now :)

By far the worst food I have ever had. The wings were actually very good. More all of our food looked like baby food. And tasted like baby poop. The food had no flavor at all. I have no idea how people gave this place a good review. When we first walked in it was just two of us and the other two in our party were parking the car. They would not seat us until our full party arrived. Then they gave us some crazy reason on why they wouldnt seat us. We couldnt understand why they wouldnt seat us. Then then owner came over and again tried to explain why we werent being seated. They were pretty much calling us liars saying we didnt really have 4 in our party. Then he brought us over two sample beers and said, "here these are for you so you dont think Im a complete dick." Then i told him I didnt like beer. And he said,"oh well. Ill drink it then. And did you notice Im not bringing you anything else?" It was very weird, and very unwelcoming.

Skip this place. Bad food and bad service. The beer selection is great, but thats about it. The service is slow which wouldnt be so bad if the wait staff werent also very rude. We were trying to have a nice family lunch and they practically pushed us out the door. The food is also nothing to write home about. The wings were decent. We also ordered their breakfast burger which comes with old, raw bacon and old, overcooked eggs! We asked for new bacon but the waitress told us we couldnt have any since they cook all the bacon first thing in the morning, but that theyd heat up the old bacon for us. Ew. They also took our napkins in the middle of the meal. Why? We were also scolded by one of the waitresses for putting a glass on an unused table (which remained vacant for the duration of our 2 hour visit) in an attempt to make room for our food. Sorry we annoyed you with our business. We wont waste our money here again, and neither should you.

Attempted to stop by Local 44 last night, which I thought was a great establishment just a stones throw away from my alma mater and Fraternity House. Unfortunately, we were shunned at the door because we "looked like we were on the Erin Express". Sure, we were wearing green, and had a couple drinks, but Im a 26 year old Optometry Student who wanted to enjoy a few good beers with friends on St. Patricks day. The greeting we received was not expected or one that Id want to receive from any establishment, if not outright hostile. We were told we "looked too young" and they "didnt want to clean up another bars mess", when the Local was the first bar we were at that night. It was insulting and very poor business. I would not recommend going to the Local 44, due to the poor customer relationship and arrogant attitude. Take your business elsewhere. I will not be returning any time soon.

Went here for drinks, it was an OK atmosphere. Good beer. Went back 2 days later for Sunday breakfast. Waited 50 minutes for very mediocre food, which came cold, in a comically small portion size--I got like 1 1/2 eggs for $8. Total ripoff. The waitress came by to fill up our (dirty) water glasses once in this 50 minutes The waitstaff is un-attentive and generally rude. There were 5 of us, and they added on 18% automatically to the bill. I told the waitress her menu says "Parties of 6 or more get automatic gratuity", and she said "those things happen". Yeah right, more like your service sucks and youre trying to get a tip you dont deserve. I watched her walk back, open a menu, read "6 or more", shrug, and come back with my change. Bad food, bad service, why go here?

Always a great beer selection, excellent bar food. There are always a few vegan options. I usually order the vegan pastrami-spiced seitan Reuben and the Brussels sprouts. The vegan food options used to change more, but at least the semi-permanent items are all good. Great spot for happy hour, dinner and brunch. And the beer list: Its always top notch with a selection of great local beers (with happy hour deals) as well as hand picked beers from the rest of the country and the world. A great place brought to us by Brendan and Leigh.

Went for Sunday brunch at noon and place was pretty empty. It didnt help business that it was 67 degrees out in mid February. Sat in back and had a great meal. Ordered the eggs Benedict, very tasty, but it didnt come with home fries. Odd that my wifes meal did and my meal didnt. Beer selection was decent but their cut off ABV for pints is 7% then it is served in a 12oz. glass. Good news is that they broadcast Premier League (English) soccer at 10am on Saturdays. 20oz imperial pints for $4. Plenty of vegetarian choices on the menu.

One of the things I truly miss about West Philly since I moved to another part of town is this venue. A great beer joint, good staff, though the menu is sometimes a little lacking/small and overpriced for what you get. There are specific menu items that I tend to always get though, depending on the time of year, because the menu changes seasonally. Overall, a groovy brewpub in that part of town. Make sure to check out the Bottle Shop next door as well: the staff there has turned me on to some great brews!

I wad really excited for local 44 when they were converting it from Kelly Anns and at first local 44 was an awesome place to go for great beer and great food. When they first opened they had a very small food menu but overall the food was great, but recently it seems like they have changed the menu and possibly hired some new chefs/cooks because the food is terrible! I am very cautious about giving Local 44 another chance but hopefully things have changed since a few months ago.
